  • Everyone knows Supermicro makes a server for almost every use case imaginable. Their extremely dense 3.5" platforms have been a favorite for any organization wrestling with expanding data footprints. The 36-bay storage server though, has for years hit the sweet spot in terms of capacity and price. In this review we take a look at Supermicro's latest 36-bay storage server. We leveraged 32x WD Ultrastar DC HC520 HDDs inside, twin 10GbE onboard NICs and installed TrueNAS CORE to share the storage over the network. Take a look as we detail the server build and performance in this video review. ‪@SupermicroPage‬ ‪@TrueNAS‬ ‪@WesternDigitalCorporation‬

Great Review, I love Supermicro servers because they use industry standard state of the art hardware which gives end users lots of flexibility. The system i an H model using SAS3908 H/W Raid Card & as far as I know you can't run Software Defined Storage like TrueNAS on a H/W Raid you need HBA meaning L Model?
TrueNAS was configured as a wide 1 vdev of 32 drives RAIDZ3, Do you think performance will be improved if you used different vdev configuration?
Again I want to thank you and the entire team for the great review

They can with HBA pass through mode, although you can get to the same path without having to spend on the RAID card. Performance might be better with RAID2Z and less overhead, although it will still be hitting IO limits of platters pretty quick. - Kevin

We do several per year, we just need to do a better job making the videos ;) The website has a good deal of SMCI content though.

a RAIDZ consisting of 6 each vdevs, where each VDEV is an 6 drive RAIDZ; you could lose one drive in each VDEV without loss, and, even lose an entire VDEV (more than one drive failure in a single VDEV) without data loss. Lots options with 36 bays....

Icelake is not 3rd gen Xeon. I guess I get to know pretty quick that I'm wasting my time here.

I thought this was a SUPER old review of something running Xeon v3 for a second...This is linked from the SuperMicro product page, too. Come on!
