    Based on my own experience on building a little travel trailer, I would say "Don't start a project like this with the sole purpose of saving money over a commercial made unit". I started mine to be able to choose the exact design, the components quality, the craftsmanship I wanted and the most important for me the satisfaction and proudness of a project satisfactory brought to its end.
    Time never counts when you are doing something you like.

      Very well said. That’s exactly why I built myself...to have a camper of my own design. I’m very happy with the camper, but curiosity got the better of me, so I got the calculator out.? Lol!

    God bless you for totalling all of that up, lol! My husband and I converted our 6 x 10 box trailer into a camper and after a couple grand I stopped counting...yikes! Honestly, the total was around $3,000.00 not including the box trailer. So, all and all (including the box trailer), it was a bit over $5,000.00 that was spent gradually but GOSH we ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!! We own it in full, use it more than our older 24 foot RV, and wouldn't change anything! When you customize something, you're more accustomed to using it and we definitely DO use it! Thanks for sharing and I love you little Teardrop!😊

      Being paid in full is a great thing! I have a 23ft Rockwood, and like you, find myself taking the teardrop on more trips. I do miss the bathroom, but I really like the tiny camper I built myself. There’s such a sense of satisfaction. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!

    Thanks for sharing your information. I love the way tear drops look, but I converted a 5x10 motorcycle cargo trailer. Paid $1800 for the trailer and found everything to build the back kitchen and everything else, used, at Habitat Restore. Hung two hammocks for the kids. It was a lot of fun and only took a month.

    I was going to do the 5lb lpg tank as well, but at 75⁰⁰ I said screw that and bought 3 flame king refillable bottles for 14⁰⁰ each.
    In any 7 day trip I've never used them all up.
    in fact the 3rd one is just along as a "just in case".
    I run heater, stove, and oven all at the same time without hoses everywhere.
    Don't think I'll ever go back to bigger tanks.
    Oh, and yeah, they paid for themselves after 4 fills compared to useless one time use bottles😊.
    Hope you enjoy your build for a long time👍

    Great thorough job explaining the costs! Thanks!
    My friend built his for about the same price. It cost more than he thought too, and around what most builders spent with that level of quality of the underlying “bones.” Your build price is equivalent to the most basic box on a cheap trailer sleep area only. Ya done good!
    My friends big surprise was the time to build what looked like a simplistic design that could be roughed out in a couple of weeks (from never done one) and completed in a month 🤣

    • @CampandCamera

      Lots of items were reasonable, but I was surprised by a few like the propane tank. The bracket alone was $100...crazy. If I could find a cheap source for trim, I would have it made. Yep, the build time was waaaay longer than anticipated. Thanks for watching!

    Hey man! Great story and very informative for the guys who are scared to jump right in... my build was a little bit less than yours but not as fancy either. A good way to cut cost is to look for the deals. I picked up my hatch hardware from an old camper shell at a junkyard. I took it apart and re-purposed it into my hatch. I have a stainless steel kitchen counter that I found from an old industrial refrigerator door at a steel scrap yard. The plywood I purchased was always half price because when I would go to my “Home Center“ I would look for the sheets that had damage on the corners. Knowing well that I would cut them off anyway. Save money be proud of your work and keep on building. “I can build that”

    • @CampandCamera
      @CampandCamera  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      David F Thanks for the great comment. Looking for oddball parts was half the fun of the build. If a person just focuses on the end result, a build probably isn’t a good idea. If you enjoy the process of things, then jump right in!

      @davidf9630 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @CampandCamera  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will be a bit of work, but so worth it. You’re starting at a great time. It will be a good winter project, then be ready for Spring. Also, that $18,000 won’t buy the satisfaction you’ll get from camping in a teardrop you built with your own two hands. I’m not knocking factory built campers, but building your own is so satisfying when you start using it.

    I too was shocked when I added my build up. My big mistake was attempting to make the doors myself. In this humid climate, as soon as I cut them out the door pieces warped. Now I had an odd shaped hole that standard doors would not fit in. I had to have custom doors made, which wasn't terrible, added a few hundred dollars to a set of doors, right about $1000. Standard doors run around $300 each. I also have an AC system, which was an engineering nightmare but sorted in the end.
    I completely agree with your statement to not start a project like this planning to save money, it's more like a money pit. But it sure was fun to build. Great feeling of accomplishment now that it's done. I learned so much that my next one will certainly cost less and be built better and much much much faster.
    People just don't understand, when you're designing something yourself, you have to think two or three steps ahead so you don't paint yourself into a corner so to speak. And sometimes you do it anyway. I started with a pile of steel and wood and turned it into something cool....took 2 years. Having a welding a fab shop behind my house helped, that's for sure.
    What I'd like, and if anyone knows where to find it, is a set of mechanical drawings on building a tear drop. I have not been at all impressed with the "plans" you can buy online.
    Great topic, one I wish I'd seen before I started my build.
    My build, not counting the recent few hundred I've spent on a hitch lock and wheel boot, licensing and title....roughly $6500.

    • @CampandCamera
      @CampandCamera  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Geez, sorry about the problems you had on the doors! I can see where that would add up quick. I’m going to try a different method on my next doors. I hope the warping doesn’t happen on those. I’m going to keep this in mind. I also plan to make some prints, but still tossing ideas around.

    As Far as I'm concerned , I would attempt building one for about 10 grand plus my labor......The trailer basically would come in at about 5 grand without all my extras like Solar and Television and canopies and high-end Propane cooking stuff....I would have high end cabinets because I want them to last for the life of the trailer., and the doors and skin would need to be the best also. Hardware like door handles and locks and lighting and hinges and fenders and axles drive the cost up alot too !

    Hello. I love the build, breakdown and video. I am curious about the trailer build itself. Looking around, norther tool has a full aluminum trailer (yes it may not carry as much weight) for around 900. Including fenders, leaf springs, wheels and so on. Why did you decide to go the route you did with your trailer frame? Thanks

    • @CampandCamera
      @CampandCamera  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I knew that a teardrop would be lightweight and prone to bouncing around on the rough roads where I live. So, I had this one custom welded by a trailer manufacturer that I had bought a larger utility trailer from in the past. Also, he was willing to do the build with the custom configuration I wanted.

    If you were to account for your labor costs (your time is got to be worth something), I see the actual cost of your build exceeding 10k easily. And this does not include any specialized tools needed. Now when a vendor accounts for overhead costs, profits, inflation, etc. you can see how the price of these products increase rapidly especially if quality materials and craftsmanship are utilized. Your cost estimate for materials gives me a good baseline for what a teardrop should reasonably cost. Thank you for posting.
