    Man I was super impressed with Beyond the Boundary. That beautiful Kyoto Animation shure shines through. Considering I bought this on a whim with very little prior knowledge about this show, I was pleasantly surprised to find a top notch anime series unfold in front of my eyes. Beautiful visuals coupled with compelling characters seems to be Kyoto Animation's calling card. I highly recommend anyone to watch this hidden gem of a series. More people should watch this one in my opinion.

    Very good critique and analysis of the series. I just finish it today. Movie, ova, everything.
    I’m glad you bought up all the other unnecessary stuff like what the “antagonist” want or how the world actually work doesn’t really affect the quality of the show. Because what they did right, and that is the relationship between the main cast, the animation, the voice acting MY GOD THE VOICE ACTING IS PHENOMENAL!, is so excellent that all the loose end just get swept under and you don’t need to question it. This show is such an emotional experience for me. I didn’t really care about the main relationship like more than half way in. And the last 3-4 episodes make me invested so much in them. Certainly glad I picked this up. My top 5

    At 8:04 you undersell that episode a bit. Not only did it do an idol routine, it even did what most most Idol anime do in a few static flashback images of things that didn't happen animated. They accomplished an idol anime within like half an episode.
    Also you are absolutely correct with the villain being bad in the way that we don't really learn much about him, which I just realized thx to you.
    Regarding the sequel movie, I think it's soundtrack is an improvement on the series, though a lot of the songs sound pretty similar (I know very well, I've listened through all of them several times). Still the songs serve the scenes they're in perfectly.
    Along with this, I cannot begin to explain how incredibly beautiful of a scene it was when Akihito had that flashback before seeing this: i.redd.it/4sjeivkahn071.png
    Akihito sees in a flashback a boy and a girl going together, before the girl gets hurt and begins crying, after which the boy after some hesitation goes to help the girl back up before cutting to the scene with Akihito in the same position as the boy, while the girl, in this case Mirai, is nowhere to be seen(instead there is an ever so vague outline of lighter are, where Mirai should be). This along with track 19, a song which perfectly captures the feeling of loneliness (which I know from experience) create the most beautiful scene in terms of feels and visual storytelling imo, after the climax scene of Akihito at last saving Mirai. The boy and the girl in the flashback symbolize Akihito and Mirai and they basically foreshadow what will happen with the boy helping the girl up, which then occurs both when Akihito saves Mirai and more exactly the very same thing happens when Akihito helps Mirai up at the hills of yellow flowers(fun fact, this location was foreshadowed in Mirai's book of things she liked very early in the movie). It shows to both the audience and Akihito, that he needs Mirai, and that Akihito needs to save her. It culminates in Akihito standing alone with a night sky(helps emphasize the loneliness, as the stars in the sky are all so far apart from each other plus space is really lonely) and an empty aura before him, where Mirai should be.

    • @Totaraum
      @Totaraum  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's right, they totally do add all those flashback portraits don't they? They were really committed to the idol bit. I also didn't realize how bad the villain was myself until I was in the middle of watching the fight between him and Izumi at the end of the show. I asked myself why I didn't care about what was happening, and after a little thinking I connected the dots. I ended up listening to every track from the movie in order to pick what to use for background music, and I agree that it's pretty repetitive. Tracks tended to fall into either "tense/suspenseful music" or "sad piano music". There was some really good stuff there though. That description of the vision Akihito saw was great. KyoAni has always been phenomenal at visual storytelling. I actually noticed the flower field callback while rewatching the film and intended to mention it somewhere in the video, but it never came to pass. Thanks for taking the time to write this much! It was really fun to read

  • @writecraft7049

    as an outside viewer in a world written by someone else, it's really not our place to question their way of showing their story, you just don't tell every detail of a story it be boring otherwise. But yeah, your right, this adaptation seemed to have been rushed, and they might not have been faithful to the source, but that's normal considering its age, but from what I know the stuff they produce now really do connect with their roots. 7:12
    Their song rocks even though it's hard to understand because it's Japanese. 8:01
    They were really building up that twist in the end, I'm not sure if it was good or not. 10:40
    Good video not as comprehensive as what I was looking for but good enough here's a like. I'm 65.

    I'm proud to call this my favorite KyoAni show that (I thought) no one else likes. Ordinarily, I'm not a fan of the notion that visuals and themes trump story. The cinematography blew me away, with the beautiful colours, shot composition and symbolism riddled in many areas. That, and the gorgeous sound effects selling action after action more and more. (This ended up being a long rant but I hope you’ll still read it)
    Man, it’s great that you enjoyed the movie, because I didn’t at all. It quite literally ruined the series(?) for me. I was already mad at the conclusion for ass-pulling Mirai back other than “movie”, but literally all the conflicts in the movie are from ass-pulls too.
    The eldest sister having to fight their siblings? Yeah, magic parasite. Mirai fighting Akihito? Also from weird parasite powers. The entirety of the emotional drama between the two main characters? An out of nowhere revival and amnesia. It breaks my immersion so hard and I just can’t get invested at all.
    And that last ass pull is the worst offender for me. Deaths in stories need to have meaning, it can represent loss, sacrifice, stakes, etc. By reviving Mirai without any good reason, any and all emotion you’re still trying to take in by the end of the show is just ruined because her death, the main foundation of the ending for the show, suddenly lost all meaning.
    But ok, I’m sure some people would be happy for a happy, if not forced, ending. But then they have to put in the plot point of amnesia. And it’s not partial amnesia, it completely wiped her. All her backstory, her inner struggles, emotional growth, character development, all gone. To me, that isn’t Mirai anymore. Because Mirai is the character whose growth I was invested in, who turned from not confident to someone brave enough to sacrifice herself for her love, not just the pretty girl with the glasses. She was just a brand new character with Mirai’s body.
    Then, I ask, what is the point of the damn revival? All it did was to give Akihito a reason to be all sad and gloomy and generate conflict from that. I don’t think that justifies how much it ruins the ending of the show. They literally played with our emotions back-to-back for no good enough reason other than “we need emotional conflict”.
    Sure, the imagery of the emotional climax of the movie was very nice. Of course it was, it’s KyoAni. But the message I got from that beautiful imagery was, “hey, you see all this sakuga right now? Yeah, it’s emotional time baby, drop your complaining about our duct-taped together plot and feel sad.” Which really rubs me the wrong way.
    I really really love the show, I was in love with the dynamic the main duo had. I even looked past the poorly explained mechanics behind Beyond the Boundary (the youmu) because it brought such strong emotional beats, those that were built up from previous episodes. Which is why I feel so offended by that ending and the entirety of movie, because of the ass pulls and deterioration of storytelling yes, but mainly because it practically erased one of the characters I loved so much and restarted her from a blank slate that I’m just supposed to be invested in immediately. I so wish I could erase the show’s end scene and the movie from my head and just let me savour the sad ending of the show.
    That’s my perspective. It’s nice seeing people talk about this show this many years later so, thanks for doing this video. Again, I’m glad you enjoyed the movie, but I just can’t say I agree at all.

    • @Totaraum
      @Totaraum  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing all your thoughts! It was a fun read. I also really wish the show ended with Mirai dead, and if it meant this movie was never made I suppose it would've been a fair trade off. I agree that the world has some pretty poorly explained mechanics, which is why I just kind of rolled with the whole amnesia and parasite thing. Also, I believe the parasite was foreshadowed in the show? Particularly during Izumi's confrontation with the bad guy whose name I can never remember. The amnesia is unexplained, but the revival has to do with her ring and her mom, but I'd have to rewatch the film to fully remember.
      Either way, to me it doesn't really matter how the characters get into a situation, but how they handle it does. I really loved the dynamic of Akihito reluctantly pushing away a curious and friendly Mirai. I liked watching her rediscover her powers and seeing how scared and defeated that made Akihito. Basically since I loved the characters, the movie was fun to watch because it flung them into an interesting and dramatic scenario.
      Also, I do agree that kyoani has a habit of making "cry here" moments feel a little too obvious. It must be especially annoying if you aren't enjoying the film already

    • @spagboii4546
      @spagboii4546 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Totaraum Here’s the funny thing, if they wanted to make the movie no matter what, they could’ve went for a generic happy ending in the first place. It would’ve made for a less impacting ending, but at least that wouldn’t have played with our feelings and let us think the show’s ending could have been better than how it was.
      I’m going to be honest, you could be right about the parasite and amnesia thing, because I also watched the movie very long ago. But I do remember being actually bored at the really supposedly emotional parts because I was so not immersed. So maybe I missed out on the explanations and foreshadowing because I was just so mad and frustrated about the whole revival at the end of the show, and held that feeling going into the movie.
      You know, I agree with you on how the character dynamic was very nice in the movie. They flipped the roles and made Mirai the one to actively try to get close to Akihito. I think that’s great! But I don’t think full, complete amnesia is the right way to that approach. Like I said, I had no way to get invested in what was a essentially a new character that they expected me to feel strongly about because “hey, you watched the show right?”
      Personally, I’d think an easy fix would just be to give her partial amnesia. Maybe Beyond the Boundary made her forget all about itself, causing Mirai to forget about Akihito being half BtB? Maybe Mirai only remembered events up until a certain part of the show where their relationship was going strong? I’m sure they could come up with something. Point being, we would still see Mirai wonder what happened to Akihito to make him distance himself (reason still being he is still half BtB and don’t want Mirai to get involved with him again since he saw what could happen to her again if he does), and we would get the same, if not even better drama surrounding the two on that same premise, because this time it actually involves a character that we know and loved for 12 episodes. Just imagine that sense of betrayal Mirai would feel besides from just her pure confusion that was in the movie. In the end, a 50% Mirai could build herself to be 100% Mirai again, but 0% could never do that in a believable way. (But they didn’t even try to give us original Mirai back through spoopy youmu magic!) I’d still be mad about the revival if she got partial amnesia instead, but I’d feel less betrayed because I wouldn’t think we’re getting more Mirai when in fact we technically weren’t.
      And yup, those “cry here” moments are two way streets. It could elevate a great plot and give a huge payoff to all the build up it had, or in this case, have me let out a huge sigh because of all the missed potential I saw in the plot.
      Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me though!
