    I always wonder if the thought ran through his head towards the end that all his money wasn't going to save him. He was "alone" in the middle of a desert with no way out. Led his men into a shitty situation. The concept of 40k men being chased and lassoed is just nuts to me. • @seansweeney2875
    @seansweeney2875 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Yes he did take down sparticus..not before sparticus had won a few victorys..plus crassus did have some military experience ie sullla. But he couldn't have believed the parthians were ready for him..and he played right into there hands...they tried it with Mark Antony..he did lose some men .but not 6 legions. Antony fought a brilliant retreat and didn't let the parthians surrounding him. He kept there magnificent horses and archers at bay..crassus wanted what caeser and pompey had glory, he started the war...and paid the ultimate price...if caeser hadn't been murdered...he was going to parthiar...and no doubt would have avenged crassus and defeated the parthians...

  • @seansweeney2875
    @seansweeney2875 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    So crassus wasn't a great general like caesar or Mark Antony, pompey scipio etc .he just thought he'd be like caeser in gaul ..win huge victory...and glory..and his greed and ambitions would make him more gold ,he really underestimated the parthians. Great horse men and archer's.

      The battle didn't really go the way the narrator explained. His writer did a poor job.
      Surena didn't lead the main Parthian army. The main army has mostly infantry and was being used in a siege, by the king of Parthia, in Armenia.
      The king gave Surena a cavalry detachment to harass and stall Crassus.
      Crassus decided to stand and wait for the enemy's arrows to run out. But Surena had ordered trains of arrows because he was planning to harass the Romans for days on end. So this lasted until sunset.
      4000 Romans were injured during the day. Crassus decided to fortify a nearby town. But he left those 4000 injured who were killed by the Parthians.
      The next day, Surena sued for peace as he was still at a great disadvantage and didn't have any infantry to take a fortification. (he was stalling for time...waiting for tge King to arrive with the main army).
      Crassus rejected Surena's offer to meet. Crassus' troops heard about this and threatened to mutinee. So Crassus went.
      Arriving the meeting, Crassus' horse panicked and threw him off when a Parthian tried to take the reigns of that horse.
      This caused a scuffle to break out. Crassus and the officers were killed.
      The army was now basically leaderless, panicked and started running back back to Syria. Basically every man for himself.
      This was when the killing started. The Parthians hunted and killed all the Romans soldiers they could find.
      In total, 20 000 were killed. But 20 000 made it back to Syria.
      Surena then decided to attack Syria.
      Cassius took charge of the survivors and defeated Surena. Cassius then followed up by ambushing Surena and destroyed the Parthian force under Surena.
      There was no molten gold poured down Crassus' throat. The Parthians didn't know him.
      The gold incident happened with Manius Aquillius, not Crassus.
      Manius' father was governor of Pergamon and had bled them dry with taxes. Being governor was seen as an opportunity to enrich oneself but Manius' father took this to an extreme. Manius himself broke a peace treaty without the Senate's approval in order to loot and plunder (several times). Afterwards, the Senate denied involvent in breaking the treaty and made it clear Manius was acting on his own.
      Manius was defeated and captured by Mithridates and handed tover to the city of Pergamon. The People of Pergamon took vengeance by pouring molten gold down Manius' throat. And somehow, this incident incorrectly got into Crassus' story.

    A typical Western version of history full of myths. Was the Parthian army inferior in numbers?? No, the Parthian empire was gigantic and their army consisted of a core of 10.000 heavy armed knights and bowmen on horseback (CATAPHRACTII), superior to the Roman infantery based army. Probably about 30.000 light armed troops on horseback (spear throwers) and foot soldiers (bowmen) were also present. The Parthians used the drums to let the Romans form squares (sitting ducks), making attacks on all sides possible. The Romans had zero change of victory!!!!!!!! AMONG THE PERSIANS ALL RULING POWER WAS RESERVED FOR THE MILITANT ARISTOCRACY, THE PARTHIAN LEADERS DID KNOW THAT CRASSUS WAS ORIGINAL FROM PLEBEAN HERITAGE AND THAT IS WHY THEY POORED GOLD IN HIS MOUTH......
