- What's a good daily schedule for a puppy? Does spaying or neutering change a dog's coat? Should I take my dog to a cardiologist? How important is color when choosing a dog to breed? What is a "chocolate" Cavalier? The answers to these and other questions are here...
I enjoyed your comments about Chocolate Cavaliers. Someone on a Cavalier Facebook site made a comment that chocolate Cavaliers go for several thousand dollars more than the standard 4 colors due to their rare existence. So glad you cleared this up! I happen to have a try color who we adore. Thanks for all your info.
A Cavalier Tower on your lap.. That is priceless.. Good Morning and Have a wonderful Sunday and week ahead..
Cavalier Tower. Haha. I always said that the plural of Cavs was Pile of Pups.
@@jscook54 Pile of Pups.. That is hilarious.. Works as well.. All the best..
Santa needs to get you a larger chair! you keep adding Cavaliers to your lap.
Teddy loves to play and nap in your lap. Lovely temperament.
This was amazingly helpful. Thank you!
Delightful to see you with your Cavaliers! Wonderful information and questions in this episode of Ask the Breeder. Teddy gets more and more adorable. Eager to see Apple's pups whenever they join your family. Have a beautiful week!
I just love your chanel…. I got my very first dog ever is Oct of 2022, a Ruby cavalier and by October of 2023, got a Black and Tan cavalier and watching your videos has helped me raise two great little cavaliers, Karl and Coco!
Thanks for that video, I did find it helpful. I've seen several very opinionated websites insist that every Cavalier owner needs to take their dog to a vet cardiologist every year, and it did make me wonder if I was doing my dog a disservice by just taking him to his vet for regular check-ups. He is just a family dog, I have no interest in showing or breeding him. It just isn't feasible for me in my neck of the woods, as the nearest one is over two hours drive away (one way), and even the low cost clinics are the same distance. I did my homework before getting a puppy and chose a breeder that has two AKC awards, does at least three or four genetic tests on her dogs, yearly cardiologist and ophthalmologist checks, as well as checks on the hips and knees. One of the first things she did before we even got him was send us links to the OFA testing website so we could look at the health of his parents. I went back several generations, and it seems as though several of his ancestors are getting to be almost 8 years old and still have no heart murmur as of last year. So that is very reassuring to me that his genetics are good.
Love Bootsie and Apple. Teddy is really going ro ne beautiful!
Great questions today.
Thank you so very much! I would take your recommendation over anyone. You are a stellar breeder and your commitment to these most precious beings, the Cavalier is heart warming. Your videos are helping me recover from deep loss and grief. Again thank you!
I really do like your “ask the breeder” segment. I’ve learn a lot. I went to second dog show and thought the judge was very fair. My little girl got a first place ribbon in her class. However she was the only dog in her class.🤭
Been there myself. When people ask, just smile and say, "my dog won her class!" They'll be impressed.
There were some very good questions in this episode. I have never heard of a chocolate cavalier before. But I don't claim to be an expert on the breed either. lol
As usual very informative and entertaining… Teddy is just adorable and very well behaved for 15 weeks … my Blenheim girl, Rosie is coming up to 15 months … we had to put her into respite care for a couple of weeks as I haven’t been well and my husband has undergone 2 surgeries since the new year … however we got her back this week, definitely matured a lot, eats her food promptly as she’s had competition 🐶🤔 … they’re such sweet dogs and so smart … I’m glad that I feel that I can manage her going forward … keep these info sessions going 🇨🇦…
My Gemma was spayed 11 years ago and now, age 12, still has a lovely, silky coat like your Tag.
Good video and good questions as always. So nice to see a little tribute to gorgeous TAG. My favorite after Apple. 😊
Love from France.
Great series. So much useful information here.
Love ask the breeder
Thanks so much for answering my question. This was very helpful!
@chaskat35 EXCELLENT ! Just a question for your next 'Ask the Breeder' - How often should you wash your dogs? (Putting aside when they roll in dirt or dead animals or get in salt water, etc.) If they are just 'at home' - how often is too much? And what things should you avoid as far as special washes and treatments are concerned? Thanks for the excellent videos. (P.s My wife says to tell you that 'Teddy must stay!) Cheers
Good afternoon,to you, sorry for my english, but i'm gone a say to you, then i like youre explinations verry munch,, because youre explaine il's so well..thank you very munch..and i'l loves youre beautiful Cavaliers..they are soo nice. Bravisimo...
Thank you .... and your English is good!
Hello there! Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate all your videos! Educational, FUN, jammed pack with cuteness ie cav tower🥰 Had to call hubby over to see that….adorable💕 How are your dogs doing after Tags passing?…do you see any obvious changes to behavior …like missing her…I would think especially Boo as Tag was her littermate? I got my cav Charlotte approximately 8 weeks after one of my 2 Coton de Tulears passed…they were littermates and the only dogs in the house…it took time for my male survivor 8 years old to take to Charlotte’s shenanigans …but getting along okay for now….more side by side play then playing with each other…and he is acting more like a puppy…not an old man…Thank you for sharing!😊kim
There's an interesting answer to your question, and I'd like to take it up in my next "Ask The Breeder" video. Watch for it.
Extremely interesting videos. Some say that cavaliers shed like crazy…. Is that true?
They certainly do shed, but I don't think it would be overwhelming if you had only one Cavalier. With multiple dogs, we tend to notice it more, and we vacuum frequently.
@@chaskat35 Yes, I was hoping for that answer. Thanks! Your videos are extremely interesting.
Hello I found your channel just 2 days ago and I really enjoy your content😊 I would like to ask a question. I would love to get a female Cavalier but I already have a female French Bulldog and she is 18 monts old. Do you think it's possible to have 2 female dogs in one household without any problems? Thank you 😊
We have 3 females in our house now - which you can see on the videos - and there is no problem whatsoever. In past years, when we had the energy to handle it, we have had as many as 8 or 10 girls at once, and there was never any difficulty. Go for it!
My 4 yr old Blenheim has a grade 3 murmur. He is otherwise happy, healthy and very active. He's been seen twice by a cardiologist. The recent checkup showed no progression of mvd. How often do you think he should be rechecked?
Since he is already at Grade 3 before age 5, I would have him seen by a cardiologist once a year for an auscultation. The cardiologist will make a recommendation for an echocardiogram, or for more frequent visits, if and when the condition warrants it.
The good news is that we have had several Cavaliers over the years who showed symptoms before age 5, and in almost every case the dog lived a good long life.
If you are finding that the expense of seeing a cardiologist regularly is a burden, you can save about 50% by visiting one of the many clinics sponsored by dog clubs around the country. You can find a comprehensive list of clinics at cavalierhealth.org.
My 6month old caviler has either developed some kind of separation anxiety when i leave im not sure but seems to bark quite a bit in his crate for quite a long time - even if hes tired going in . I do have bones in there for him to chew - any tips ( i also cover the crate though he seems to knock that down) would love to know how to train him to be more relaxed in his crate so he knows its nap time ( he used to ) Thanks so much!
This is a good question for "Ask The Breeder" number 8 - thanks!
Thank you!
What shampoo do you use to keep the white fur staying white and on your Cavaliers? After a few days on mine the white looks dingy again.
I use Vellus Show Shampoo (available on line), and I usually add a bit of Dawn diswashing detergent for the white areas, especially the paws.
@chaskat35 Thank you. I will give it a try. Cavaliers need to look their best all the time. Appreciate your help
Hi,
I have been enjoying your educational videos. I am looking for a smaller breed of dog to train as a diabetic/therapy/emotional support dog. I am thinking a toy poodle would have more energy than l have and not as cuddly as a Cavalier King Charles. My concern is the CKC’s sense of smell being able to detect my blood sugar changes as well as a Lab. Also l would like to train my dog to use a human toilet when it doesn’t have easy access to a grassy spot. I trust you to tell me the truth if l need to look for a different breed or not. Plus concerns about how much harder it is to train the toy breeds to potty train due to smaller bladders.
Sincerely,
Kathy
This is really outside my area of expertise. I have run across Cavalier owners whose dogs are service animals, detecting such events as seizures that are about to strike. I doubt, though, that you could train a dog as small as a Cavalier to use a human toilet; I've never seen or heard of this. They are, however, easy to housebreak if you do it right, and can maintain control for long periods of time.
Thank you for your input. Do you know of responsible CKC breeders around Wichita, KS or Oklahoma City? I live a few hours from either city.
Unfortunately, that's a tough area of the country in which to find a responsible breeder, and it's a long way from my area. I suggest you get in touch with Chris and Yolanda Degen. (chris@kingdomruncavaliers.com, (409) 504-5513)
They are in Ohio, but Chris is the President of the Midwest regional breed club, and I'm sure he is in a much better position to recommend breeders. He and Yolanda are terrific Cavalier people, and I trust their judgement.
Thank you for the wonderful lead.
Hello from England! Our cavalier King Charles spaniel, who is just a few months older than Jamba (loved those puppy reports!) has recently been diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus - do you have any experience in this or any tips? Sadly he now needs insulin injected twice a day and can only eat his 2 meals 12 hours apart, so he gets very hungry and has got thin. Great video as always!
My Max was diagnosed with diabetes. He had injections twice daily. You need to watch their eyesight as diabetes can affect their eyes.Max did develop cataracts I did everything in my power to keep him healthy. But he just died one night. From diagnosis to death was exactly 2 years. He was only 9 years old.He regularly had a monitor attached to his back to monitor his glucose levels. They went up and down quite dramatically. This was done because I refused to take blood from him daily. This was just too stressful for Max and myself.Apart from that he was happy and active and eating well. His last day he was totally normal. He died peacefully. He did not have any heart issues. It is hard to find people who will mind them as a lot of people do not want to give them the injections.I wish you all the best for your cavalier.
I have never had a case of this in all my years with Cavaliers, so I can't speak from experience. All I know is that the 2 most common causes of the disease are pancreatitis and obesity. We've only had one single case of pancreatitis, and the dog was treated quickly with antibiotics and recovered quickly with no after effects. We also pay very close attention to our dogs' weight, so obesity is never an issue here.
It sounds like Fiona has some valuable experience to share, so read her comments carefully.
Hello, my tri color was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 6. Also twice a day he needs his insulin. I feed him in the morning give him his insuline and around 3 pm I give him healthy treats from Specific they are very good for diabetes dogs in the evening I feed him again and give him the insulin maybe give him some more food?? Of course if he gains weight he probably might need some more insulin I check his blood and weight every month in July he's gonna be 12 years old greetings from Belgium
@@nathaliesoenen1819 That is great.Well done.My Max only lasted 2 years. The vet did say that was the usual outcome.Another cavalier diagnosed on the same day as Max only lived another 2 months so you have done well.Has your cavalier had any eye problems?
Yes he has dry eyes put optimmune twice a day in his eyes he's very good with that so sorry to hear that you lost your cavalier so short after the diagnosis and at that young age 😢
Can you recommend a breeder in Providence or Boston area? or, how far are you away from Providence?
I am on Long Island, which is about a 4 hour drive, depending on traffic. There is a fantastic breeder about an hour from Providence, whom I have known for years and I trust fully. If you email me at charlieweidig@gmail.com, I'll send you her contact information.
Do you know a reputable Cavalier breeder in NC? I had to say goodbye to my wonderful companion in July 2023.💔
You can find a listing of breeders who are members of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club USA at ckcsc.org/breeders. This is where you will find the most trustworthy and reputable breeders. I know several of the NC breeders listed there, and they are good people to deal with. However, if you go just a bit outside of your state, I can personally recommend Pat Winters, a breeder in the very southernmost part of Virginia, near Norfolk. I have known her for decades, and she has always been a leader in health testing her breeding Cavaliers to produce very healthy puppies. You can reach her at 757-238-2036, and you can tell her that I referred you to her.
My. Dog is DNA tested clear in all I have one problem he has lots of curls that go over his back legs is there anything I can do about that I don't think it's very much like in the show ring
If he has been neutered, that might be the cause of the curls. Or he could just have the genes that produce that kind of coat. In any case, it should not affect anything about his health or quality of life, other than having to be combed and brushed out more frequently.
