I bought my work truck from a JUNKYARD!! ... Here's why.

  • In this video, I begin my series all about my new work truck. I decided to lay the groundwork by explaining the circumstances in which I purchased Grim (Grim Repo is his name!) and answered a very pressing (and annoying!!) question: why would I ever buy a vehicle from a salvage yard.
See the "How" portion here: • Tips for Inspecting a ...
Well, I hope that this answers your questions!! Thanks so much to Pull-A-Part for making this video possible!!
    🔧
ALSO, if you are interested, here is the link to my class offerings: www.pistonsand... and I do offer my "How to Buy and Sell a Car Without Getting Screwed" class about 4 times a year.
    🔧
The amazing (very Texas-y sounding!) music in this video is "Fringe Trimmed Boots" by Bird Creek. I don't think that they require any sort of recognition to use their music, but it's a bomb song so I wanted to include it anyways. THANKS, Y'ALL!!

To be fair I work in a well paid job in banking but drive an '01 Camry which I purchased last year for the equivalent of about $1200 USD. Let me tell you a secret from banking:
Often the people who can least afford it who want the latest and greatest cars. Vehicle manufacturers use credit to allow insecure people to buy/lease cars they can't afford to impress other people in some vain attempt to attain social status. It's a completely pointless arms race.
Also never having to worry about exchanging paintwork has it's advantages out on the highway when people try to bully their way into your lane or merge without looking/indicating. At $1200 all in I will show absolutely NO contrition.

Don't apologize for buying something a little beat up and bringing it back to life instead of buying some insanely priced new truck on credit. Smart move on your part. I keep all our vehicles serviced and repaired myself and we keep them a long time. There really isn't much I can't service, repair, rebuild, or fabricate and it gives me a lot of satisfaction to do so. All the tools and equipment I own have paid for themselves many times over at this point in my life.

I got a 1995 Hyundai Elantra from my junkyard for $400. It only needed a radiator, which was new in the box in the backseat when I got it. The owner, who was the mother of one of the employees at the salvage yard, was going to replace the radiator when the car got hit in the rear when it was parked on the street, so his mother decided to just get a new one. I installed the radiator in the yard, put in a new battery and drove it home. I did the bodywork myself, and bought a new taillight from the Hyundai dealer, and drove it for four years until the timing belt let go and ruined the engine (was a interference engine)

Three years now and I'm just watching this. I actually got lucky with buying my Toyota pickup. I did have to drive (get a ride) four hours round trip to even look at it. Looked it over, test drove it, then bought it for only $1300. Yes it was an 84' single cab pickup, high mileage, 4cyl engine (coming from an American vehicle owner), bed all rusted out, been painted with roll on house paint, but hey it is a pickup which is what I wanted and it was a 4x4 and 5speed. I purchased that truck in 2015, and now in 2022 of a lot of work and shallow pockets plus an extra 350k miles does not look like the same truck I purchased back when. Of course the engine died but at 455k mile, couldn't afford to pull money out of my account just on a whim, had to get a small loan and did a complete 3.4l conversion plus a complete dash and HVAC conversion from a Tacoma amongst all other upgrades I've don to the truck over the course of 7 years. Started with a 84' pickup, and pickup is the only thing that remains. So now I own a 84-2004 Toyota V6 5speed SR5 TRD pickup, the only thing it's missing is power windows and door locks, but who needs those that's why god gave you hands in the first place. Toyota's old commercial saying "I love what you do for me", hands down the longest lasting truck (kind of, size wise), but I have done scrap runs consisting of just over 2k lbs. twice in one day back when the 4cyl was still the power plant. What you said in this video has been me my entire life hence the reason I love turning wrenches and also love working on vehicles, mainly mine now. I stopped doing the mechanic thing when I joined the Army.

No, you're totally right and it have your game. I do the same all the time and if I Carson Pick-n-Pull all the time, too. Good ones and bad ones. But the end of the day they're all amazing deals. And very much so worth it if you know how to pick them. And have good skills and rebuilding Motors and whatnot are not worried about it.

Toyotas dont die. I have a 2003 Prius with 354k miles on it, and it runs like new. I'm intrigued, and not just because you're sort of hot in an "Edward Scissorhands" kind of way, but because chicks that wrench are the perfect combination of refined skillset and level headedness. That and I'm into redemption. I LOVE to see vehicles brought back to life. I'm not yet subscribing because I had to watch this video twice to be able to make out what you were saying.

Hi, cool comments enabled ! Looking forward to the details of your tests and what spares and stuff you got. Did you get a spare engine too? The key is "3rd gen forerunner" great vehicles like you say 500k mi on some of them. Buying a junk chrysler is just asking for trouble. Enjoy your vids.

Just had a similar experience, a minivan was delivered DOA from an estate after a shop said they did not want to fix it. yeah, it was a lot of work and had several problems from half-assed repairs and neglect. Squirrels ate the wiring above the fuel tank and ABS sensors, a real PITA to chase down all the electrical gremlins. The entire braking system had problems: ABS controller was stuck not releasing fluid, front calipers seized, frozen brake cable and lots of rust. Stabilizer links were history, replaced the sway bushings and outer tie rod ends. This is the majority of stuff that got fixed and the tires also had rotten casings.. Most of this stuff came from Rock Auto and Amazon (clearance items) because there are no junkyards where I live. Also used a Green Machine to clean the carpet and seats, it was just nasty inside. Polished the paint, applied a sealant and wiped it down with spray wax. Also reconditioned the foggy headlights to very good condition. people say this is a nice vehicle after being COMMITTED to resurrecting it from the dead. It cost me some cash, at least I know the repairs are solid and not full of other people's problems like you get from a used car lot.

I know I’m a few years late to the party, but a 4Runner for $1200 is a steal now, especially with your knowledge and skill. Toyotas can run forever if maintained well and I still kick myself like I knew I would for selling my ‘94 toyota truck (the year before Tacoma) . I wish I could find something like Grim for that price. I’m currently looking for a used white work van, and in spite of the American made vans being sorta wonky on reliability, and most having well over 100,000 miles , they are still expensive AF. Love your videos, and you are awesome! Keep ‘em coming.
