Tip, don't squish ants. When you do, they release a pheromone that attracts other ants. Also, I highly recommend Terro liquid ant traps. They're basically filled with borax, which they think is food, so they take it back to the colony. Unfortunately for them, the borox is deadly and takes just enough time for them to send the other ants to get the rest and bring it back. Eventually, it takes out the entire colony.
@@jessicapayne8622oh my gosh not the vacuum 😂😂 and like I said I'm a big fan of the Terro traps but you have to kind of let them go to town on them for it to work so you'll have quite a few ants around the trap. So if that isn't desirable I'd recommend Ortho, they make great stuff, specifically their indoor and outdoor barrier spray. You spray it where ever you don't want ants or other bugs, not on carpet though. It is completely pet and kid safe once it dries, it's not really toxic to the touch when wet but it is if ingested so that's something to be mindful of. Outside of that, I'd recommend Raid spray ant killer but I only use that outside really.
I was going to mention this, but also don't leave the dead ants in the tarantula room because that will also attract other ants. When we get the occasional ants in our house, we kill them and flush them down the toilet.
I can't recall, but I believe unless you use like bleach or specific chemicals, they can reestablish the trail. I'd think there'd be a way to confuse their trails and direct them elsewhere, though, maybe?
I have to agree that it works really well for ant problems but I wouldn't recommend spreading that through the tarantula room, imagine how easily airborne particles could get into the tarantula enclosures and harm them.
I keep ants myself and i completely agree with your concern and you irradicating them as they can be a menace when loose in largae colonies so i hope they dont kill your beautiful tarantulas
You’re my favourite TH-camr right now like ur videos are so funny and I just binge watch them whenever I can!!! I am super super scared of spiders but your videos have made me soften up to them a bit and I was actually so shocked to see how cool tarantulas can be.. Like I didn’t know they could be purple and blue are u kidding me???😭 I love it so much
Sprinkle cinnamon anywhere you have ants...at the door way at windows won't hurt your animals and smells great.... something for your yard sprinkle Borax yes the laundry soap! Also it's awesome for your carpets sprinkle on let it sit 10 minutes and vacuum!
The active ingredient Fipronil should work on all ant species. I would recommend putting it in areas where active ant trails are rather than in their nest, or near their nest. Sometimes if it's too close they can feel threatened, and not take to the bait. If you're able to get your hands on a spray called Terimidor (or any spray with Fipronil) spray it around your home during ant season.
Definitely scrolled too far for this suggested, D-earth is a life saver for those or us who actually like getting rid of ants without horrible chemicals.
@@dudder2008 not a stupid question, it absolutely would be dangerous for them were they to be crawling through it. With care and some amount of isolation, it should be possible to use it and not effect his spiders.
I own a type of insect which happens to be another number 1 ant enemy because I own 2 praying mantids if ants get into my room the praying mantids are dead that’s so scary
You don't need to apologize for killing these ants, it is not cool to kill ants and I would always say leave them be, but in this situation it's your responsibility as a tarantula keeper to protect your pets. If they starts making their nest in one of the enclosures inside, you will lose 100s of animals. So it's better to kill one colony than have an entire room of exotic animals pass away.
That ant bait you drop some near the ants and leave it, and hope the colony takes some to the queen. If the queen eats it, it will die thusly eradicating the colony. Sometimes the ants don’t eat it immediately, but most species eventually will if they are hungry.
They are friends and besides I think he would do the same in this situation, or maybe try to move the colony somehow. This is to save all these tarantulas, so I think AC would understand it is needed to do this. He himself has seen the destructive power of ant colonies entering his own enclosures. IN his big vivarium he even added predators and plants to get rid of that one invasive colony, so in a sense he has done the same before.
So, I was passing by the same issue and I did one thing that might help you, well, try to put the spray around all the windows and doors, and try to buy a spay that does not affect plants because they're less strong but strong enough to kill ants, of course, that you must put it just in the windows and doors don't do that near your tarantulas, I know this is a lot to do, but It worked for me and I hope it works to you too.
So... I have heightened empathy... I literally have empathy with plants... So I have made rules to myself as to when it is okay to kill which are for food, to protect yourself or your property and when something is suffering... Killing these ants are okay since you are protecting yourself/your property 🤷🏻♀️ if someone who literally can't kill flies and someone who feed ants says it isn't wrong to kill them then i would say its okay 🤷🏻♀️
And unfortunately it’s a part of nature for creatures to die. The main moral should just be don’t kill unnecessarily. It was either the ants or the tarantulas in this case.
We’ve got fire ants here in SC it hurts like hell when they bite then itches for over a week. I raise chicks and the ants will try to crawl into the eggs and eat the babies before they can even fully hatch
try backing powder with sugar, the ants like it and will eat it a lot so they die on it, we use it always in our shop where we dont want ants running around!
Dawn PowerWash bottles. You can aim and it's effective at killing things with a carapace on it. Should be able to use it without hitting your trantulas and deal with the ants.
my street also has an ant issue, I use diatomaceous earth around doors and windows, although you could also use it as a natural plant supplement as well I know that father fish uses it for his aquarium dirt mix, anyway the stuff is a chalk white powder that interferes with the ants exoskeleton, I've also had a friend tell me to mix borax and Sugar, the way I see it the queen ant needs to be taken out of the situation or maybe find some native predator that can keep the numbers down, hope that helps.
The problem I’ve had is when you put poison or kill ants outside they just go inside even more. Try natural oils inside and boric acid mixture outside. Also surround your enclosures with sticky fly paper or chalk.
Apparently the main ingredient in some traps in America is borax, yes the cleaning stuff. See if mixing borax with something or buying borax traps works. Be careful though, it can cause liver failure in humans and pets if injested, so not a super bad type of poison but problems. See if that works
You know you can hire people aka professionals to get rid of your ant problem by giving you a strong poison almost any ant will eat and put that poison in a little special plastic bait trap where only ants can get to the poison and give you a bottle of poison you can refill the traps whenever you want I had an ant problem at my house inside and it works so well!❤❤
I just mix some plain vinegar and dawn soap and put in a spray bottle it makes some cheap and effective bug spray that won't poison your dogs or cats. Spray around the doors and where the bugs cross through and see if that helps. JAB - Portland, Oregon USA.
There’s a special chalk you can use to stop them getting in I can’t remember the name of it but antscanada did a video on it tho should give you some peace of mind
That stuff is not gonna work in the long term. You need to poor vinegar around your perimeter like I suggested the last time you had a problem, and find the nest and flame it.
I've had ant problems this summer. My usual defense, Amdro, isn't working. I don't have any tarantulas so they're just a nuisance. The goal of the ant ki!!er substances is for the workers to take it to the queen, who theoretically d!es after consuming the ant ki!!er, which theoretically ki!!s the colony.

How the heck does this guy CONSTANTLY have so much issue with mold and ants? None of the other keepers I watch have the same issues... and if they do it's like a couple specs of mold and they instantly change it. Is it because of the location? Or is buddy doing something really wrong?
Nope. You put the powder in the bottom of the tub with the roaches, knowing they couldn’t climb the sides so they had little choice but to interact with it. However, with the ants, you put the powder on the top of the outer part of the lid while the ants were huddled together on the inside upper corner of the lid, giving them ample space to avoid the powder and never really interact with it at all unless by choice. That’s not a fair experiment, so I don’t see how you can legitimately say that the product works with one but not the other when their settings were vastly different 🤷🏼♀️

uncontrolled ant colonies, thats one of the most dangerous things on the planet, no joke

diatomaceous earth is non toxic and will annihilate any bugs getting in your room. just leave a little barrier. its like razorwire for insects
Can confirm. And it kills mechanically meaning it'll never lose its effectiveness like traditional pesticides.

Food grade diatomaceous earth. Sprinkle it around your windows. Put it around your empty containers. Under the sinks and cabinets.

Mix in a tiny bit of sugar…
I know you said it smelled sweet, but they are definitely attracted to sugar…regardless of species
