Right? Think of Andor and She Hulk. Both showrunners knew the fans who don't mindlessly clap for everything had zero faith in their ability to produce a quality show. Gilroy focused on developing interesting characters, world building, and making a show that proved many of the doubters wrong. Gao on the other hand, focused on THE MESSAGE, made a trash show with trash dialogue, zero humor, and mocked the fans who made fun of the show; which turned out exactly the way we thought it would.
It's one thing to be able to predict what the next move will be, it's another thing to be able to use that wisdom to an advantage. Agreeing with the critics and continuing is not a good strategy.

Did you know that january is the month hollywood pushes all the shit they think is going to fail? Its the least lucrative month for box offices, at the least, so they release their shittier projects so that they dont compete with the bigger projects. (Except for Treasure Planet, they intentionally released it along side the 2nd Harry Potter film so it would bomb and they could scrap the sequel already in pre-production, because it was the highest costing animated production at the time.)

I guess it's not so mysterious why his LotR was so great while his Hobbit was terrible. In the former he had to omit things, and the latter, add them. He tried to save a project that was already one movie too long. I doubt that someone with his respect for the material would fight for a trilogy from scratch. He tried to fix what was existing with no prep, and it nearly killed him. Now that lore isn't just not respected, but actively despised, what else should we expect? They're selling a name only, and marketing it by enraging fans. Sucking each other off all the way to the bank. I don't think it's the opposite, I think it's the logical endpoint of Hollywood, and it's just mere chance that sometimes people are able to squeeze gems out of a manipulative and narcissistic system.
I think it is very interesting that the interview question was asked in an interview so long ago. Hindsight is 20/20 but we see now that groundwork that was being laid in Hollywood even then. They were setting the expectation that directors/producers in the future should be injecting their own messages and commentary in retelling established works. That it is not only acceptable but expected of them to hijack popular material with established fanbases to tell some story with alternate agendas and modern lenses.

They made Galadriel a “strong, independent” Karen who’s husband is missing and daughter is non-existent, and Elrond a himbo who has the writing skills of a middle schooler. Bland storylines and forgettable characters. Long story short, you missed nothing, it sucks. 💀

Yeah going meta is never a good idea unless the show is built for it. Its like West World season 2. The writers were butt-hurt that redditers guessed all of the plot twists and surprises in season 1, so they tried to outsmart the redditers, you know, that tiny subset of people that don't represent the vast majority of viewers? And they weren't smart enough to to do it well, and the plot was a mess compared to season 1. Same thing with Game of Thrones season 8 : the writers just went with whatever NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MINDS would guess. Never go meta. (oops, just noticed im 8 months late)
I honestly believe they mightve maybe had a few pre-written"meta" moments planned for the show but once they realized that the only joy their intended audience was getting from their terrible show was dumping on it, they completely went in the direction of saying "all this was planned" and we "intentionally" wrote a shitty show bc "fuck the trolls, am I right?" The point being that if its appropriate for the medium, if the show/movie was designed with meta in mind, then it can contribute to the film. And by being meta, I don't mean breaking the 4th wall; that's a certain form of meta but its not what people generally think of when mentioning meta. Meta is writing a show a show with outside, current factors in mind such as writing a show with Reddit super fans in mind, or writing a show to spite a certain demographic of the people that watch the show. Fleebag is another example of well done 4th wall breaking; it can really work if done well. Meta, however, rarely ever pays off, especially since Hollywood writers are generally so disconnected from reality and think Twitter and downtown Los Angeles are the extend of the real world.
Remember, back in the day, you could watch just about any movie. You might not like it, but it didn't make you rage and want to burn movie studios to the ground. It was like. "Hmph, that sucked" and that was it. They didn't shove bullshit in your face or try to teach you some fucked up, ridiculous agenda. Movies were fun, badass, gave you good memories and feelings. It's crazy because even in doing that he STILL was able to feature a gripping movie that touched on topics of racism, strong female characters, evil men, corruption etc...all the same things they fail at doing nowadays, Jackson nailed.. And how did he do it!? By respecting the established themes and stories, because they were already good enough! What a mind blowing notion. He sprinkled a little flair on some things that Tolkein glossed over for the sake of hollywoodizing LoTR but he did so in a thematic way that felt cohesive and translated well. It's a feat of great success and hardwork but at the same time a simple concept. Take a simple concept and put hardwork and love into it and it'll turn out great.

The G4 tv one hurts on a personal level because the area I grew up in if you weren't into sports or hunting you were the outcast of the outcasts and the original G4 was my escape that showed me there were other geeks out there and that we had our own little culture that was already inclusive for just about everyone. So you can probably imagine excited I was about G4's return only to be immediately heartbroken by what we got. I barely made it through the first episode before I couldn't take it anymore because of how they bastardized it and I was basically called a piece of shit for recognizing it.

I'm in my late 40s now, and video games and arcades were a really big part of my pre-teen and teen years. I probably spent 3-6 hours per week in arcades from 1983-1990, then 6-12 hours per week from 1991-1994 (there was an arcade in the mall next to my college and Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat had just come out). Without exaggeration, I can say that the number of girls (who weren't employees of the arcade, the mothers or rare girlfriends of male gamers) I saw in an arcade in those days numbered less than 20. It was practically unheard of, and seeing one there was a legit head turning moment. The industry was built on the quarters and tokens of boys and men. That said, She-Hulk was always a little closer to Deadpool-esque shenanigans. Pushing a sort of "edgelord" framework for feminism could have been an earnestly hilarious show (and it had some moments of this), but I don't think it could have pulled it off under Gao.

I can't fathom how someone can be enlisted to a multi-million dollar project for a multi-billion dollar corporation and openly declare they will do everything in their power to ruin said project and make it lose as much money as possible, and not get immediately sacked for it but instead applauded. I wouldn't waste my money on paying for Disney +, so I appreciated the fact that Gary took the time and effort to show absurd examples of how terrible the show was. The clip of the 10-year-old girl outwitting a group of killers by toddling through underbrush and tree branches was more entertaining than anything Disney has done in the past 20 years. If that scene got a thumbs up through every phase of its journey from script to sound mixing, then it served as a painful to watch lesson in how little talent is required to work for Disney. The bar is set somewhere between mildly retarded and functionally illiterate Hiring a roomful of monkeys chained to typewriters would be much cheaper for the same results.

His internalized self-hatred and abuse go against any efforts at memorialization or heroism. The script could have been in a similar vain as Remember the Titans: Blacks and Whites working together to understand their differences while battling a common enemy. Instead, it turns the protagonist into a psychological wreck. Overall, the movie is stuck between uncovering the protagonist’s victimization and deflating American valor. Perhaps this is indeed what happened in real life, but it just seemed unnecessarily forced to me.

As a kid in the 80s I went to both Disneyland and world during the decade. I didn’t even enjoy it much as a kid. The only really interesting thing is i met Max Casella and the girl that played his girlfriend on Doogie Howser by chance when we were standing in the same line. When I saw the interviewer, I thought that this must be a very old video. But it's only roughly 20 years old, which, apparently, is a very long time.
I guess it's not so mysterious why his LotR was so great while his Hobbit was terrible. In the former he had to omit things, and the latter, add them. He tried to save a project that was already one movie too long. I doubt that someone with his respect for the material would fight for a trilogy from scratch. He tried to fix what was existing with no prep, and it nearly killed him. Now that lore isn't just not respected, but actively despised, what else should we expect? They're selling a name only, and marketing it by enraging fans. Sucking each other off all the way to the bank. I don't think it's the opposite, I think it's the logical endpoint of Hollywood, and it's just mere chance that sometimes people are able to squeeze gems out of a manipulative and narcissistic system.
I think it is very interesting that the interview question was asked in an interview so long ago. Hindsight is 20/20 but we see now that groundwork that was being laid in Hollywood even then. They were setting the expectation that directors/producers in the future should be injecting their own messages and commentary in retelling established works. That it is not only acceptable but expected of them to hijack popular material with established fanbases to tell some story with alternate agendas and modern lenses.

They made Galadriel a “strong, independent” Karen who’s husband is missing and daughter is non-existent, and Elrond a himbo who has the writing skills of a middle schooler. Bland storylines and forgettable characters. Long story short, you missed nothing, it sucks. 💀
They did the same thing to ST:TNG when they made that horrible "Picard."

The show writers saying She-Hulk was about "trolling the trolls" show why it failed. It wasn't about the comic and it's fan. It was about providing a point.
Yeah going meta is never a good idea unless the show is built for it. Its like West World season 2. The writers were butt-hurt that redditers guessed all of the plot twists and surprises in season 1, so they tried to outsmart the redditers, you know, that tiny subset of people that don't represent the vast majority of viewers? And they weren't smart enough to to do it well, and the plot was a mess compared to season 1. Same thing with Game of Thrones season 8 : the writers just went with whatever NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MINDS would guess.

The head writer of the show is the consummate insufferable Hollywood middle aged woke hipster chick who goes home to her house in the hills every night only to be greeted by her 2 cats and her boxed wine for another evening of "how fast can I drink myself asleep!" However, now that I'm thinking about it, Deadpool's meta and 4th-Wall-Breaking never really affected the plot (with the exception of the stingers after Deadpool 2, by which time the movie was basically over). So, how about this; never have meta actually mean anything. Keep it as a joke for the audience, and nothing else.

The point being that if its appropriate for the medium, if the show/movie was designed with meta in mind, then it can contribute to the film. And by being meta, I don't mean breaking the 4th wall; that's a certain form of meta but its not what people generally think of when mentioning meta. Meta is writing a show a show with outside, current factors in mind such as writing a show with Reddit super fans in mind, or writing a show to spite a certain demographic of the people that watch the show.
Fleebag is another example of well done 4th wall breaking; it can really work if done well.
Meta, however, rarely ever pays off, especially since Hollywood writers are generally so disconnected from reality and think Twitter and downtown Los Angeles are the extend of the real world.
Remember, back in the day, you could watch just about any movie. You might not like it, but it didn't make you rage and want to burn movie studios to the ground. It was like. "Hmph, that sucked" and that was it. They didn't shove bullshit in your face or try to teach you some fucked up, ridiculous agenda. Movies were fun, badass, gave you good memories and feelings. I miss those days😢 I don't think things will ever be the same.

The G4 tv one hurts on a personal level because the area I grew up in if you weren't into sports or hunting you were the outcast of the outcasts and the original G4 was my escape that showed me there were other geeks out there and that we had our own little culture that was already inclusive for just about everyone. So you can probably imagine excited I was about G4's return only to be immediately heartbroken by what we got. I barely made it through the first episode before I couldn't take it anymore because of how they bastardized it and I was basically called a piece of shit for recognizing it.

I'm in my late 40s now, and video games and arcades were a really big part of my pre-teen and teen years. I probably spent 3-6 hours per week in arcades from 1983-1990, then 6-12 hours per week from 1991-1994 (there was an arcade in the mall next to my college and Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat had just come out).
Without exaggeration, I can say that the number of girls (who weren't employees of the arcade, the mothers or rare girlfriends of male gamers) I saw in an arcade in those days numbered less than 20. It was practically unheard of, and seeing one there was a legit head turning moment.
The industry was built on the quarters and tokens of boys and men. And watching girls come in now and cry about sexism and misogyny makes me laugh. YOU came into OUR pastime, toots. If you don't like the way it rolls, scram.

The script could have been in a similar vain as Remember the Titans: Blacks and Whites working together to understand their differences while battling a common enemy. Instead, it turns the protagonist into a psychological wreck.
Overall, the movie is stuck between uncovering the protagonist’s victimization and deflating American valor. Perhaps this is indeed what happened in real life, but it just seemed unnecessarily forced to me.

In everything they have to "give the message". It's ridiculous. I became the scum of humanity in the eyes of Netflix, after all I am male, white, straight, businessman, middle class and the most disgusting of all: Christian! The only way a man can be shown positively today is if he's black or gay. Otherwise you can already know is gonna be either crazy, dumb or jerk, specially if christian!"
As a kid in the 80s I went to both Disneyland and world during the decade. I didn’t even enjoy it much as a kid. The only really interesting thing is i met Max Casella and the girl that played his girlfriend on Doogie Howser by chance when we were standing in the same line. Otherwise It’s 85% standing in line waiting to do stuff 15% of the time. It’s probably 95% waiting in line now unless you pay extra.

As a pre-movie Tolkien fan who loved Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings, I relate to the hobbits, especially Sam. Yeah. Hollywood is overrated. There are golden stories around the world outside of hollywood. Could you recommend some movies, please? I enjoy asian movies but usually find them by chance. I have seen just korean series (on yt) but not movies. Also chinese cinema is amazing. Some of my favorite movies of all times, are chinese.
