I go through five hymns and demonstrate how to add fillers in several different styles, primarily using chords and arpeggios.
Hymns featured:
- Crown Him with Many Crowns
- He Hideth My Soul
- How Great Thou Art
- My Jesus, I Love Thee
- And Can it Be?

I wish I could have found someone to help me years ago. I volunteered to play piano for a church, but I didn't know how to turn hymns into the creative pieces, so I always felt inadequate. Thank you for sharing and lending that extra help that so many of us need!
Thank you so much this is exactly what I’ve been looking for! Small church pianist.
Wonderful! You’re welcome!
Really amazing! God bless you Amanda.
Thanks!
Thank you for sharing your church piano playing skills. I wish you had online lessons for us to enroll and learn in a structured format.
I hope to one day have that structure.
For now, I’m about to do my first workshop on chords music.amandateromusic.com/products/hymn-playing-chord-workshop?promo=10OFF
@@AmandaTeroMusic Thanks a bunch
I was so excited to see the subject line UNTIL I saw the key you were playing in. It’s a learning video. Please please use the Key of C or F just for simplicity sake. No reason to make it more complicated than necessary. Then, beginning intermediate players can learn and benefit from the videos. Otherwise, just label the subject is for most advanced piano players. Thank you for the consideration. PS I played piano in church for 20 years. Not every church pianist is as advanced. We need help too. 😊
Just found your channel. I always enjoy hearing other church pianists thoughts to bring variety to our service. I appreciate your posts.
Thanks for consider my request, Amanda, I really appreciate it. I learn a lot hearing and watching what was you doing. Why did I never think of repeating the same chord with the right hand in an octave!? O: It's sounds good for congregational playing!
If I can suggest more topics to add at some day in the future at your list, it will be: ''Different types of playing''.
You know, it's not the same playing for a congregation, to play for ''invitations'' when they make a call. Or playing before the services (preludes) or maybe for specials (solos for meditation) even, how to accompany a singer for a special.
I'm happy for what i learned today. Again, thank you! (:
You’re very welcome! I’m so glad it helped!
Great suggestion! I love teaching the various styles of playing hymns. I’ll be sure to put that in my list too! Thanks!
You got blessed with this gift, talent.
Tks for sharing ❣️
Wow Just what I needed. She is so talented! Amazing!
Thank you for this Amanda! I've found that fillers have been a bit difficult for me to teach my students. After watching this, I know better how to relate these "filler ideas" to them.
Yay, that makes me so happy to hear!
I am from Brazil. It is very difficult to find someone who plays hymns… I started trying to do that. Thou doth not know how much thou hast helped me. I thank thee for thy kindness. May the Lord bless thee!!! ❤❤❤
Didn't explain so I could follow.
I like your tutorial they are the best, but please try to go slowly please,as you demonstrate
I like to buy the ( over 50 left hand patterns for church) book
Nice playing though
8:07 How Great Thou Art
Thanks!

Watching You From Nepal 🇳🇵
Wow! I am speechless. Thank you so much. Great playing.
Am unable to play chords with my right hand. Is there a way I can figure that out?
Thank you Amanda for effort you put to teach beautiful music lovers all over the world. I'd love to learn to play hymns since it's the second target after J.S. Bach's music. And since I am a beginner I would love to see something relating to playing hymns but more simple if it possible. Like where to start with to play hymns. Or some example with simplified versions with some different left hand accompaniment patterns. Anyway thank you again and may God bless you and you loved ones.
Very helpful. Toward the end where you’re inserting those octaves and arpeggios, it almost has a Beethoven type feeling
Interesting lesson
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for an info-packed lesson.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
I love your playing Amanda! I'm a church pianist but I play just basic...melody in right hand and octave chord pattern in left hand. I seem unable to expand to runs, fills, and arpeggios
Can I suggest What A Day That Will Be in Key of A flat.
One of my favorites❤
Thank you so much! I just added “What a Day that will Be” to my list! I’m very behind in recording new tutorial videos, but hopefully I will get to it!
Fantastic!! How do I get here?? 😂
Awesome lesson! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. I finally found a very exhaustive method on how to apply left hand fills. Thank you so much for this lesson, and for making the pdf available!
I’m so glad you’re able to learn more!
Thank you so much ma'am 🙏 may God bless you more. Thanks for the PDFs❤️ appreciate it so much
You’re very welcome!
Great stuff Amanda!
Thanks!
Thanks Amanda but I am lost
I loved listening to this.
Thanks for listening!
Are you reading the music or are you looking at your hands for those hand-jumps?
I do both. After a while muscle memory kicks in and you know the distance without looking. ☺️
Thank you Amanda!
Because he lived!
I wish I knew this
This was so helpful....thank you for sharing this!!
I’m so very glad it helped you!
Can these filters be used every song
The fillers can be used for a lot of songs! You mainly have to be sure there is enough time for them (e.g. the chord is the same for four beats).
Great Job!!
Thanks!
Ma'am where can I get your pdf tutorials for beginners??? Do you do virtual classes???
Too jazzy not like gospel!!!
That’s jazzy to you??? Hahahah
Our congregation does not like to listen to plain boring basic chords (but maybe yours is okay with a more limited musical vision and ability - so that’s ok too!).
This music is for hymnal songs not gospel songs
