I suspect Ralph was paying for women and unlikely was he cheating during the marriage (otherwise the money would have been noticed). I think she made him feel beneath him which is why he was ready to move on and probably the reason for opening the marriage. Notice how she didn't mention any reason for opening the marriage. He probably had to deal with daily insults from her without her even knowing she was being insulting. Open Marriage is just a prequel to a divorce.
