2 mods that changed my like for love, mesh seat cover for summer and if you start getting into dirt some knobbies(the factory tires are okay but have a narrow window for error on loose dirt), i love mine and i hope you have the best time with yours.
Hey Yammie, young (22) adv squid here. The reason I picked a BMW 750gs "old man bike" was because I liked the seating position as opposed to any of the other kinds of bike. I am also not delusional and know the vast majority of my riding is pavement with the occasional unpaved road, so I knew it was more advantageous to get an ADV as opposed to a dual sport. I kinda hate to say it but I LOVE the bike. I drove it all the way from Birmingham, AL to Yellowstone National Park and back and never had an issue. Seat is comfy as hell and the windshield does a fantastic job.

Another young (24) adv squid here. Got the 750gs a little while ago, but it's been great. Needed something that could carry all my climbing gear that was also comfortable for long road-trips and suitable for taking off-road. I've been on a few adventures with it, including through a bog on the side of a hill. My only real complaints are that the windshield is slightly too low for me and it has a thing for covering itself in dirt (seriously, it throws it everywhere). Never understood why people call it an 'old mans bike', wonder if that's spillover from the previous generation of GS.
@@gennadiygusarov6082 I'm 6'1" and find the bike is a great height for me. With boots on I'm another inch or so taller, but could ride it comfortably in trainers if I wanted. For me, I'm looking at getting a slightly taller screen since I find the stock one is a little low for me.
I’m 6’6” trying to find a bike I’ll be comfortable On long Term not something I have to grow comfortable to but something I sit on and love for years to come without breaking the bank. Balling on a budget. 7 gs tops.
You missed the type of ADV rider who like to ride everyday (rain or shine), do oil changes, change tires, know almost everything about their bikes, hit the twisties like a pro, hit gravel like a pro, do BDR every year, have emergency assistance kits, first-aid kits,goto the coffee shop and even do grocery and home-depot shopping for the family...they basically ride a car on 2 wheels 😀
I actually didn’t own a car for a year when I lived in Guatemala City. Big ass paniers and bungee chording all kinds of stuff on the back. Yup - my 2 wheel car. Lol

Totally. The V Strom rider is the guy with 30k miles on a 2 year old bike. Has only a general idea of direction they are going to travel. They just know they are going to put miles on, no matter what the road looks like.

I haven't ridden one of those but a friend of mine managed to put 175,000 miles on it with just regular maintenance. My Italian bikes are fun and reliable but I very seriously doubt that I can put so many miles on them without major repairs and draining my bank account. Maybe the Moto Guzzi will do it, and my Rotax powered Aprilia Tuono but I'll probably have to overhaul them a few times

YES! Yammie fails to understand that a LARGE percentage of BMW riders do ALL their own maintenance. There are entire forums devoted to the subject, and workshop weekend groups!
@@williamanderson4029 As a reformed BMW owner I can confirm that I had to do all of the maintenance on my BMW bike. But that had more to do with the fact most motorcycle shops refused to work on the bike even for simple things as soon as they heard it was a BMW(which includes independent shops that claimed on their website to work on everything). BMW specific shops didn't like working on it once it got out of warranty either.
I've haven't had similar problems with Honda, KTM, or Yamaha.
Now that is an ADV bike I would love to own.
You forgot the KLR milk crate nomad that packs vice grips for every tool, gasket putty to patch everything and burns oil like a power plant! Shame on you!

I have two friends that are GS bros and this is a 100% spot-on analysis. All highways, hit a fancy restaurant on the way home, etc. Barf.
Nowdays roads are all paved...gs is a roadster on heels with a good riding position. Not a true adv.

2010 1200GS rider. It's full of scratches, dirt, and long-caked mud. 80/10 dirt tires get me into all kinds of good trouble. 11,000km on it in 2020 and none in a Starbucks parking lot. There was the time I had to be found by Search & Rescue cops in the middle of the night, but that's another story. GO ADV.
I got a 2011 R12GS last summer. I rode sport tourers for years and averaged 10-15k/year living in Minnesota. “Did I just see a guy on a motorcycle when there is snow on the ground?!” I took a decade off and decided I’d try a bike that could tour but wouldn’t be quite as sketchy when I tried to get it up crappy mountain “roads.” And I’m too cheap to buy over-roasted coffee.

2009 1200GS here…dirty, grimy and scratches on mine, also. It’s a mule that will go anywhere and easy enough to work on yourself. Just picked up a 2019 Honda ATAS with 1600 miles…bike is a little underpowered but has great balance like the GS.
Me: Slowly pulls hat off head and looks at it - "KTM - Ready to Race", shouts Fuck Yeah! Returns hat to head.

I’m 26 and just bought my very first bike! 2020 ktm 390 adventure, been watching a ton of Yammie Noob and Moto Jitsu then practicing their lessons in parking lots. This bike is a blast and great beginners bike to learn on, I’m 5’10” 150lb and it fits perfect 👌

Yound adv squid and a dual sport adv guy here...I'm 19 and I got a ktm 790 adventure r a year ago and I have rode it every single day I wanted something that has no problem passing anything on the road ...does wheelies and can take some pure motorcross tires that I keep at 10 psi and rip around dirt or asphalt...not afraid to rip it out in some gnarly singletrack with my friends on their 250s that can't keep up ...and I ride with my friends on harleys that can't keep up...it's really an entirely different kind of riding

being a 1290 adventure maniac, i have to say that, most 1290 owners, actually DID a test ride. but it only lasted for like 2 traffic lights. thats all it takes for this mental LC8 engine to get you addicted. after that, there is usually no escape, you, make a u-turn and go straight to the dealer to sign the paperwork...you HAVE to have one

I am a fan of the 1290, but after one left me stranded on a test ride, I decided to pass.
@@texanbill6032 I was sceptical too about ktm reliability...heard too many horror stories for 950/990.
But after owning an aprilia caponord for 3 years, which also had a terrible reputation, and it worked flawlessly, I decided to put my fears aside and take the risk. So far I havents regretted it. It seems that after 1190, ktm has done a very good job improving it's reliability and quality

I never heard bad things about the Aprilia, but Ive only known a few owners.

Down in Guatemala I ran into that guy you’re talking about. 75,000 kms on his 3 year old 1200GS from all over North, Central and South America. The guy was tough as nails.
Noticed that “rider” and “guy” are both singular...
So I met this old guy while I was playing with my XR650R in the mountains. His oil glass cover (Yamaha XT400? from early eighties) was shattered so we nursed him back to his bungalow. He promised to show us some more tracks on his spare bike. On the way back I wondered how dilapidated his stand by bike will look. Will it even start. I thought this old man was going to waste our precious riding time. But then I struggled to keep up with him. At his bungalow he promptly produced a shiny Honda CR450F. That was the last time I put an unknown rider in a pre-judged box.
I’m #4. But I’m 70 and ride a KTM 690 Enduro R. I raced MX, enduro and flat track in the 70s.

Love my tiger1200! I think they are the ultimate bike for people who can only really have one bike. I can have fun in the twisties, crush highways on long trips, and handle dirt roads and light trails without worry. If you want to do a little of everything motorcycles have to offer and can only own 1 bike, ADVs are the way to go. My favorite class of bike.
I had a Tiger 1050. Great bike but it gave me EFI issues at 75k ish kms. Had to upgrade to a R1200GS. I miss the 1050 in the twisties though.
Speaking on behalf of the young ADV squids out there. I went from a DRZ 400 SM to an Africa Twin Adventure sport for a host of reasons. 1. It still wheelies 2. You can tour it like a sport touring bike 3. Offroad it like a dual sport 4. The comfort and wind protection you get over a sport bike and last but not least 5. Insurance is way cheaper than buying a rocket haha hopefully more young squids hop on the ADV trend
Great job on this one. Never owned an ADV in any form but I’d love one I’d actually use. Back as a young fella I did 2 Aussie laps and heaps of bike rallies together with touring on an old ‘78 Suzuki GS550B or my ‘81 Yamaha DT400. Back then the choice was simple road or dirt squirt. Things were simple with no such things as mobile phones or even all the fancy toys we see today.
I turned my Duke 390 (not Adventure) into an quasi adventure bike. I put ADV tires on it and a motocross fender and hope for the best. So far so good!
I wanted a SV650 but also wanted to be comfortable on long rides, so I got a V-Strom 650. There should be a 'convenience ADV' guy on this list for folk who just end up defaulting to them due to being over 6'2, but just use them like sports tourers.
Underrated comment. I'm 6'4" and would have loved to have decked out a dirt bike for road travel, but there's no way in hell I'm sitting like that for more than a couple hours. Just got a used v-strom 650 from someone with a heart for convenience mods, and am loving every second on it. Who knows, maybe one day I'll be That Guy with a mountain bike zip tied to the back.
Yup that’s my other bike, although I really think my bandit is the other bike now. Not sure I fit into any of the classes!

#4 all the way. We drove 250 thumpers strapped with jerry cans everywhere during my round-the-world trip. Highways sucked, but we went across the Aussie outback, up and down New Zealand, and all over SE Asia.

Ha, #3 here. 65 and just picked up my KTM 390 ADV. Plenty of superbikes and track days in my history. A Multistrada (with just a modest amount of hi-viz and reflectorized tape) also in the garage for the big asphalt tours (in my case think states rather than coffee shops). Heading to Death Valley as soon as the lodgings are open (tent camping later...maybe). Mods on the KTM are mostly on the performance side or the ones that make it more likely I won't get stuck somewhere. But yeah, there are many features I completely understand but just don't care about, and I no longer need a louder exhaust (on these two at least; I succumbed for one on my Moto Guzzi V7). Now just waiting to get my hands on a CT125.
No. 4 Is the only kind of ADV rider... Let's face it, the only "adventure" bike worth getting at the moment for offroad is the Tenere 700. Still rather the good ol' DR650 though.

Too late to comment? I'm a new rider and bought a CSC RX4 as a first bike; its on the way! I fall in the number four category I think - in it not for speed but for the experience and sights/sounds/smells. Commute too, there's a lot of construction where I am and I wanted a practical machine that I didn't have to go out and feel the need to trick out excessively.
It's not here yet but I went ahead and got the paperwork done, so it's practice time when it arrives! I'm 36, 5'10" , 170lbs, with a wife and two kids. Thanks for what you do Yammie, I am a fan and look forward to the journey that is to come! If you are ever in Virginia I would be honored to ride with you!
Thanks for the interesting video. I am an old rider (I started riding in 1973) and currently I have a small adventure motorcycle, CSC RX3 - a 250cc motorcycle. I like the bike and think that it is hidden gem in its class.

Yep started in my late 30s on TW200, then moved to a DRZ400sm with knobbies, then a Beta 390 and added a Super T1200 and then for reasons unknown I added 06 FZ1 to the stable.

Thanks for the video! I'm the dual sport rider type. I was chuckling pretty good and then the dual sport adventure rider came up. I was still laughing thinking I'd get roasted pretty good. Mostly positive, that's awesome. It's all good fun. I came from a Honda 919. Moving out into the sticks with miles of gravel roads prompted the change. As an ADV bike rider, I really don’t know much of the types you describe, although some elements of some types are out there (there are a few hard-core-ish folks for sure). I think many of us are practical riders that just seek out slightly off-road trips, but I wouldn’t look for a swamp or cliff to drop off into. Brett Tkacs has some videos on skill rating for adv riders. I would guess that most (other than pure street riders) adv riders hang in the avg/moderate skill level and ride all over the place. I was hoping for an honest and real snapshot of adv riders, but just cannot relate to most of this video. Especially the KTM folks...those 1x90 adventure bike riders do some impressive stuff. I’d like to see more off-road Multistrada riders, but they are the real unicorns.

I'm 6 4 240. Adv bikes fit great, drive great, and give nice Upright position. It's also the reason I drive an suv. It just fits and does what I want it to do
I'm 51. I've been a paramedic for 30 years. I ride a GSA 1250. I wear Hi Viz.....Of all the motorcycle accidents I've responded to.... None were middle age men, riding a 1250 wearing Hi Viz. Enjoy the ride!

My top picks would be T7 or AT for real adv. My cheaper option would be drz or klxr. If you really going remote places better to have reliability. Not everyone can have a film crew an rescue team follow us around.

I am the 40+ y/o that got tired of the limitation and pretentiousness of cruisers and needed more ground clearance, more lean angle but can't stand the gas tank shoved up against the crotch and chest feel of a crotch rocket. Learning the different riding approach that my new ride has and then eventually work my way onto further adventures.
I'm 49, 6 bikes in the garage, 30+ years of riding and just got my first ADV bike in the form of Moto Guzzi V85TT. Better late than never. By the way, the bike that can do everything hasn't been invented. Different bikes for different types of riding.

Check out Austin Vince (Not the wrestler) Mondo Enduro and Terra Circa bunch of guys did the long way round in the 90's on dr350's and no backup or support, and actually advised the long way round team.
Um Nick Sanders did it on an R1 in 20 days... just saying 🤔

@@throttlemccrackin1877 you'd have to be taking a pretty narrow view to come to that conclusion. It's pretty well accepted that LWA was the genesis of BMW's success, and turbocharged the mid-life ADV crisis. It was mainstream.

Im a #2 Love my multistrada. Its fast enough for thrills and wheelies easily, but I also wanted enough comfort for long trips and commuting.

People are selling their GS 1250s and other disappointing expensive high maintenance complicated bikes and buying the true king of adventure bikes- the Wee Strom! I salute you enlightened 650 Strom troopers! BTW I'm 62 years old, started out on a mini bike, Honda trail 70, Honda hawk 400, Honda cx500, Suzuki gs1100, and after my long hiatus of marriage career and children the heavens opened and it's been wee strom nirvana ever since. That's what's up!
Still finding my ADV identity 6 months into my second bike. From a 1978 Suzuki GS100 to a 2015 Honda CB500X after 13 years off the road. Never had so much fun. I'm 48 lol.

Yammie, I think you're wrong about ADV's being the SUV's of the motorcycle world. At least mid size ADVs. I think they are more like Subarus. Not overly fast and can be rather boring, but they are practical.

I, in fact, am a young adv squid. I just bought my first motorcycle ever and chose the Kim 390 adventure. The reason I chose a small adv bike is because i plan to use it as my daily driver to work and classes in my college town. The mounting option on an adv are the best in my opinion and they handle the aesthetic of luggage the best. With the added benefit of taking it on some trails of I so choose.
Oh noobie doobie doo. You didn’t do your homework on this one. The only true adv rider is the classic 70’s champion on a cb750 with gear strapped to the sissy bar unafraid to tackle the river crossings and snow covered passes with only fumes left in the tank.

I’m 71 and ride a BMW 1200GS but my gear is black and I take it off road. I’ve got 80,000 miles on it and have maintained it myself. I also ride a Husqvarna 701...and a Grom. Keep up the good work, I love that Ducati scrambler.
