  • The Bachmann Spectrum 1:20.3 scale model of the "Glenbrook", a Baldwin Mogul (2-6-0)
    Let's start with the bad news... THERE ISN'T ANY. So done with that...
    It runs. Well. It seems it will not spin its gears. The later Bachmann Spectrum's, like this one, have a keyed axle and gear. Thousands of early Bachmann Spectrum 4-4-0s, Moguls, Shays, and others have this near-fatal flaw. Also installation of DCC or sound requires a total rewire of the locomotive on the early Spectrums. But these have a removable coal load with a plug for DCC or whatever, switches to change the format, direction light systems, etc.
    The details are near perfect. The paint is perfect, or close to it. I am planning a few alterations. Weather... JUST A HINT. Flat black and soot on the stack. Real coal load. DCC. Bare Metal Foil roof. Well... That's about it. Cause PERFECT.
    We have been double-heading the loco with Eureka as Eureka rolls freely with the broken gear and the lights still come on and it looks great. B

    Received my Glenbrook today from Ana. Kramer. Only took four days since ordering, and arrived perfectly! Great service!! I had to sit in awe too. These really look great. I've owned the 20 year old Rio Grande blue version, as well as the two truck Shay. Wheels spin freely on the Rio Grande, but don't know if the gears are fizzled on the Shay. Neither have ever been put to power. Anyway, well worth it!

    Crosshead water pumps were the original way to get water into a boiler. They were reliable and readily maintained until late in the 1800s when injectors finally became reliable. When locos went to preheated water, pumps had to be used again because injectors don't work well with hot water.

    Its great that people of all ages enjoy the model railroad hobby. A long time ago, a famous singer once said: "I pity a man who doesn't have a hobby like this - its the most supreme relaxation". I totally agree! Since I've been watching your shows covering the Gathering of the Victorian Locomotives, they've inspired me to go out and buy a number of pre-owned HO scale brass steam locos. That's strange when you consider the fact that I'm a staunch traction guy! I own well over 50 pieces of HO brass Suydam traction models! But, I LOVE steam engines, too. I just never owned any HO brass steam engines. So, I'm making up for lost time by buying 'em up! I think its safe to say, watching all of your shows since the Gathering of the Victorian Steam Locomotive is making me go bankrupt! 🙄😬 But heck, I think I'll recover. I just need that great hobby called model railroading for that "supreme relaxation" that that famous singer once suggested. I needed to get MORE involved! 👍😉

      Hi. Wow!! Well it’s a buyers market out there for brass anything! We totally agree, a sane hobby for maintaining sanity. The “make your own world” hobby. I love the expression “loose yourself”. Well in a good way. And it’s not just trains, but model railroading without trains? Well why not. Model railroading is structures, figures, scenery and heck yes, TRAINS!! But in a time of tense conflict it’s really past tense.

    +ToyMan *Notwithstanding the incorrect cab, missing marker lamps on the smokebox, and Arabesque styling on sandbox and throttle dome leaving no space for the fleet number,* Bachmann redeemed themselves on the Spectrum 2.0 Mogul. Burnham, Parry, Williams and Company delivered the 3'-0"-gauge 8-20 D SerNo 3712 to the Carson and Tahoe Fluming and Lumber Company with two pumps off the Stephenson drive and one injector; the Carson and Tahoe built the Radley-Hunter stack in their own steam shop with the rotor supplied by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. Bachmann emulated all the aforementioned details.

      Hi. And thanks! I know Chris intended to take it back as close as possible to as delivered. As per his grant. But now is making small changes to make operations on railroads like CATS possible. The big change being air brakes. A look around and a few other changes can be spotted. The model is not exactly either version or 100% accurate but still as good a reproduction as I’ve seen. And it runs well!!

    Interesting how that they all most made it a 2/4/2/0 considering the spacing in between the middle and rear drivers

    • @iannarita9816
      @iannarita9816 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When 2-6-0's were first introduced, builders put the rear axle behind the firebox to keep the weight on the drivers relatively even. In the 19th century before any kind of calculators, yet alone electronic computers, a lot of design work was just a best guess based on experience. Poor track didn't help matters much.

    This is the last mogul for me to get since I have the other 3, and I will agree, they are gorgeous engines, great runners, will take a beating if you run them long and hard, but the one downfall is the wiring. The wires are too thin and are prone to melting the sheet insulation. To remedy that, thicker wires are needed for the power & ground wires to and from the tender pick-ups to the main computer, a cooling fan must be added in the tender to help keep the electronics cool, and liquid electrical tape must be applied on the inside of the coal and/or wood loads to absorb the heat from the electronics rather than deflect it back onto the electronics, ESPECIALLY if you have a Phoenix Sound and DCC Decoder inside.

    • @Chris9017
      @Chris9017 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rivergladesgardenrailroad8834
      For venting, I have drilled ventilation holes in the wood load and I cover the holes with real wood, but am careful not to glue the holes. Same can be done for the coal load, but it’s trickier because it’s a lot harder to cover the vent holes without gluing them shut using coal to scale.
