    What!? That sure is a bad ass way to solve a mundane yet vexing small issue! Love it. The modern equivalent is the fiber connector cleaner. The most stolen tool in the lab.

      After the connector cleaner, I think the dust caps for LC connectors are the next thing that gets stolen. 🔍😸

    • @TheStiepen
      @TheStiepen ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@carpetbomberz if at any point I clean my pockets, I will more likely than not find at least a single LC dustcap (probably in a plastic bag) in there. So yes, I can confirm this.

    That polisher is very high tech. When I worked at the BBC’s Broadcasting House in London during the 1980’s there was a gentleman in a white coat and with a tin of metal polish, and many cloths, who’s job it was to clean the PO jack plugs in the many, many, studio control rooms. Your method is so superior!

      I mean of course the BBC would create an entire role for that. Probably Head of Engineering Maintenance (Plugs and Sockets) or H.o.EM(PS) in BBC terminology?

    When I was in high school we had a 555 PBX that I operated much of the time. When other students would come into the switchboard room, I'd tell them if they held on tightly to the end of a cord plug they'd be able to listen in on a conversation. Then, I'd press the cord's ringing button!

    When I hired on with Bell Canada at the tender age of 19 in 1976, I worked the 17B and 17C test boards maintaining inter-office trunks and AT&T Long Lines circuits on the graveyard shift. A huge mound of patch cords and 310 plugs heaped on the floor, the trusty plug cleaner was put to work. But only 4 times year, thankfully.

    I cant imagine that this was really good for the plugs long term. What are they plated with? How thick and durable is that plating? Most modern plugs have just a super thin plate of gold on top which is easy to wipe out.
    But no worries, enter Deoxit! I have used that stuff for over 2 decades, it is great at what it does - if you have any electrical connections at all Deoxit can clean, lubricate, and protect that connection making it last way longer, have a more robust contact, less "crackling" or other loss of signal, protect from corrosion and so on. There are a few versions but I think it is worth having all of them so that you can use the proper solution for the condition.
    But yea, when you look at this from history it is really interesting - so what is all of that grime made up of anyways? That is a good question and I know at least part of what it is made of is gross...

    How many plug cords did switchboards have during this time period? I can see why this was invented as the metal used for the plugs wasn't as coating resistant as today's plugs and the massive number used means that a single person couldn't polish them by hand so a mechanical apparatus was needed.
