That Moment Your Mistake Saves a Life

  • We all have a unique story to tell, but some themes are universal. That Moment.... you realize your parents are only human. That Moment... you know your relationship needs to end. We talked with individuals who each have a story to tell about "that moment..."
Every decision we make carries an enormous weight. Even the ones that seem meaningless. On a day just like any other, Kim makes the conscious decision to miss the school bus. Little did she know, this would be a decision she’d remember for the rest of her life.

My grandfather was supposed to be on the plane that hit the towers. But he, as usual was late. My mom thought he was dead, until she got the call. Him telling her, that as usual, he was late. She cried. And laughed. And told him to never stop being late.

I can relate. My best friend was going to go to the Arianna concert in Manchester but an hour before, I has a breakdown and at the minute before her train to Manchester came, she turned around and comes to mine and looks after me, she comforts me and stays the night. We go to sleep early after watching Twilight and we wake up to a mess. Her Twitter was full of millions of tweets asking if she was alive. We eventually found out what had happened. We where in shock, she stayed for 2 days straight after that, we didn't talk we just watched the news and we watched girly movies, at one point we just sat there in silence and then broke out crying. We later found out where the man stood, we looked at the ticket she had and she had the ticket closest to the man. After that moment we saw that on the news about where he stood, we looked at each other eyes full of tears, lips quivering. We cried in each others arms and she whispered in my ear "Thank the heavens you are depressed, you saved my life and know we can make new lives. Thank you for taking this path, it will get better I know. Thank you for being depressed," I can still hear her whisper that into my ear. We're best friends and we still can't look at that train to Manchester because we both know if she got on that train to the concert she would have died.

My mom was driving once and she came across a train track. There were no lights or anything, so she figured she could go. But as she started moving the car, she felt a strong feeling that my great grandmother was telling her to stop. So she stopped her car, and a few seconds later a train went rushing by. It's insane.

I always trust my gut, one time in the 8th grade we were having a field trip to a hockey stadium, my mom paid 25 dollars for me to go, but the day of the field trip, I just had this gut feeling that I shouldn’t go, so I convinced my mom that I was sick and she let me stay home, later that night, I turn the tv on, the hockey stadium that I was supposed to go had caught fire after a fire work accident, no one was seriously hurt, but that could’ve saved my life. Now I always go with my gut

For anyone who was young when 9/11 happened, this hits you hard. You know EXACTLY where you were when it happened. No matter how many years go by, you still tear up over what happened. You realized in that moment, that there are "bad guys" out there that want to hurt innocent people they never met before.

I remember exactly where I was on that day, even though I live in Jamaica. I remember having breakfast watching rags to riches then all of a sudden they showed a plane going into the tower, at first I was mad, because I thought it was another show, but then I realised it was cnn live feed. I remember seeing people running and screaming and tears just started to flow, that's when I came to the realisation that man kind is most vile. I was 19.

Yes, I know exactly where I was when 9/11 happened.Nobody could forget that.I wanted to go home but our boss wouldn't let anyone go,couldn't believe it. I went to the office to listen about it on the radio & they said to go back to my station.I took my keys & went to my car & listened for 30 min. & when I came back in(after I called my husband) they WERE going to say something but the look on my face told them they better NOT! I said "my Country is under attack, anything else?" Nothing was ever said!

I forgot. Well, I was four, but anywho. Just imagine, though, that is the feeling people around the world live with DAILY because of what the USA has done. 9/11 was terrible, but we should all be ashamed that our actions led to it, not pity ourselves and seek vengeance. 9/11 is a fraction of the pain we deserved. Oh, thank all the Gods Karma isn't real.

I gasped out loud when she said we are under attack at first i thought a school shooting but then I realised. I was 3 at the time the attack happened being born in the Netherlands I was nowhere near it luckily. Unfortunately my parents still died 5 years later for totally unrelated reasons. And I wish so badly I could turn back time to warn them, ask them questions or atleast speak with them one last time. It's weird to think how the smallest things can have such great impacts on life.

The Ranger I never said every reason in life leads to a good thing. In this case, this woman got to have her father around. But sure, people do die in meaningless ways and it effects people and it's horrible. But those tragedies and the families it effects, they learn something from it and we change from it. So no matter what, things happen for a reason. Because of this 9/11 tragedy, we are now even more careful and have protected our country even more. All I was saying that everything happens for a reason, good or bad. It's just life.

And everyone stopped working and listened to radio/watched TV. And saw it unfold. Since we live in Germany I couldn't imagine the terror Americans must have felt.

The 'That Moment' series has laid waste to me, over and over again.
You think: 'This is a cool story about someone's life.' and then the overarching juxtaposition of their life, and our lives, hits.
The one about The Pulse attack and a Dad's comment to his son makes me ugly cry every time I watch it.
This one devastates for a different set of reasons, but they all have this moment where our shared humanity and our specific experience smash together in a way that was unforeseen and often devastating.
This is EXACTLY what I love Soul Pancake for, humanity, in all its untidiness and divisiveness, bound up in what makes us all alike - the human heart.
Thank you for sharing your story and please tell your Dad he's got a lot of folks with him in their hearts. (And his Brat of a daughter too.)

That morning and the morning/day it snowed in the Central Valley of California are the most indelibly clear morning memories I have as a kid. Things were just off, both times. But in very different ways. I missed the snow day and class or school photo album of that day b/c no one answered at school to know if open...b/c everyone was out in the snow apparently.

Whenever I see something that seems normal-“I won’t cry”...moments later, a single tear streams down my face. That story was by far, the most fortunate turn of events that could have ever happened.

My cousin is a firefighter for New Jersey and he’s never called in sick in his life, but on 9/11 he called in sick and was spared.

My sister was born only one year after that fateful day. While most people are grieving we are having a birthday party and it wasn’t until just a few years ago that I understood why people were so upset at me for laughing and having fun on that day. My mom was in dc she worked at a elders home. She saw the smoke, and she was responsible for taking car of patients that were in the hospital at her elderly home. They needed the beds at the hospital for the 9/11 victims. Every year she tells us that story. And every year we have a lesson on 9/11 every year when we have a chance we visit the memorial in PA when we have a chance. To all the victims and their families, you are in my heart.
