If u are passionate about something and then some random director comes in and change everything because he wants to “subvert expectation” it’s normal to get vocal about it. Of course, there is some people who take it too far and bully the actors and that is bad.
Fun fact, Liam Neeson stated that Ahmed was one of the funniest guys he had ever met and he had everyone (including George Lucas) in stitches of laughter while Episode 1 was being made. He described him as "The next Eddie Murphy."
Absolutely disgusting some of the allegations people made against Liam, bringing up one incident from decades ago to try and ruin his career.
I loved Jar Jar Binks, thought he was the best of the movie...

I'm sorry, not trying to pour salt on wounds but its a bit weird for Ahmed (the JJB actor) for saying he had to fight back racism due to playing JJB ...
I mean the perception then was that the JJB character had too much "Jamaican" flavor so the hatred was aimed at Lucas for chosing to portray a clumsy character as having a Jamaican accent .. the opinion was that Lucas was racist to do that, so the accusations was actually towards Lucas and meant as a defense of minority race portrayals in movies (regardless of what I think is an overly defensive and sensitive knee jerk reaction) .. so its a bit weird of Ahmed to take it to be a racist hatred towards him being black ...
I'm very lost ... this really reminds me of the Madtv skit of the black woman being interviewed for a job finding every opportunity to see any comments as being an attack on her race ...
I understand Ahmed is feeling hurt as a professional actor that his acting was not appreciated but the part about feeling racially attacked is kind of muddle headed ...

I went to middle school and high school with this man. He was one of the nicest guys I have ever meant and this is a real tribute to who he is as a person. All the best to a great artist, amazing friend, and a true inspiration to the rest of us!

It wasn't till recently I found out that Ahmed played Jar Jar. For many years I didn't even know who he was or knew he did Jar Jar so I wasn't even aware of the racial slurs he was called. I always thought the guy who did Jar Jar was some quirky white guy growing up 😂
I'm REALLY happy Ahmed gets to shine now, and one of the few lucky actors who gets to play 2 major Star Wars characters. And I've always loved Jar Jar, I enjoyed the back and forth with Jar Jar and Qui Gonn and other characters. He was a Gungan that didn't fit in with his people or anywhere really, but that didn't stop him from being himself. I wish OT fans could see the prequels like many of us did but apparently they were expecting more Empire vs Rebels stuff and Tie Fighters or something, idk, because Legends and all of the extended universe stuff didn't come out till after the prequels, all there was were the OT so idk what else they were looking for in something that is called Episode 1, but I know Jar Jar sure as hell didn't ruin anything for me but made me smile and laugh.
But anyway, Ahmed deserves this. And I really do hope he knows so many of us love Jar Jar and now I think a lot more people love Kelleran ❤ much love to an underrated and talented actor!!! 🙌💯

I listen to "Anakin's Betrayal" from Revenge of the Sith while reflecting on the horrible things the toxic people of the Star Wars fanbase has done.
The Star Wars Fanbase has so far:
- Literally destroyed Jake Lloyd's entire life
- Ahmed Best attempted suicide after being attacked and harassed by fans and media alike.
- Drove George Lucas completely away from Star Wars and filmmaking in general.
- Harassed Daisy Ridley and Kelly Marie Tran off of social media.
- Rian Johnson has had months of scorn and abuse on social media because of what he did with The Last Jedi.
- After 1 evening of interactions with the fandom have made Christopher McQuarrie never want to make a Star Wars film or MOS 2.
This is just a few. It's a toxic subset of fans but fans none the less who are being the most vocal.
If toxic fandom never existed, the world would be so much better off.
Does "fandom" also apply for ideologies and religions ?

The Last Jedi plot was badly written and was a massive let down to all those like me who expected to love it. Growing up as a little kid watching the prequels, I always loved Jar Jar. It breaks my heart that people would actually go so far as to take an innocent children’s character meant for comedy relief and literally spew so much hatred that the actual guy playing him was nearly driven to end his own life.

People hate, violent characters, who rape and murder on screen characters. But it's not the actor they hate. I'm glad he didn't kill himself. Depression is a public and personal struggle people need to learn coping strategies to help.
Much of the annoyance and "hatred," fans had was towards an overly annoying cartoon animated character take distracted many people from the film. In fact the Jar Jar CGI was so cartoony, none of us thought he looked real.
It's not an unkind critique, and I never once heard anyone criticize the actor.

That's the most perplexing thing about all the backlash he received. He didn't create the character of Jar Jar. Lucas did. Best was just a working actor who was contracted to play a role. He honestly did a fine job for what he was being asked to do, except that what he was being asked to do was utterly insane. None of the actors are to blame for the character writing in the prequels being so bad. Best at least put some passion and energy into the role, whereas Natalie Portman and Liam Neeson look and act like they're loaded up on valium.
And he did an amazing job. His voice acting, and also the way he moved and stuff, if you look the behind the scenes video's and see his performance, he really did a good job.
I kind of like his character.

From what I heard, the actors who worked in the prequels didn't have much of a director to guide them on how they should be acting in the scenes. Which, since there was a ton of green screen, they kind of needed a good director. I really do not blame any of the actors for the prequels being bad.

Man I knew everyone hated the character of Jar Jar, but that was not the actors fault. He was just doing his job. This makes me so sad.

I didn't like the prequels much myself. I don't think they're the worst films ever been made (I think they're just...ok) but I was expecting something more from a Star Wars movie but that's just it, those are just movies. I watched it, thought they were meh, then moved on.
@@poppotaku I'm a multi-fandom dude and I keep tabs on everything videogames, genre films and TV, animation, wrestling, comicbooks , and even k-pop. From my personal experience, kpop's the worst. Stuff like these happen almost regularly and for the most innocuous of reasons. An idol dating? Expect overly-obsessive fans to harass either the idol or the person she/he's supposed to be dating or even both. Heck, some anti-fans even have proper names for their group like it somehow legitimizes their hate. And don't even start me with silly fan wars.

Arjun Jain people didn’t hate jar jar just cause, they hated him cause he was a horrible character.
I appreciate the actor, and the struggles he went through while making the character, as well as afterwards. I genuinely don't like the character, just because i find him annoying. Not because of any percieved slights to the star wars mythos, or any racial problems, but just the character had moments that irritated me. There's one in every movie, show, or book. There's always that one character that ticks me off for whatever reason. I was also astounded to hear that people played the race card against him. That's such a shitty thing to do. I can dislike a character and not torture the irl actor. It bugs me when people do that. There are countless awesome actors who have had character flops, for whatever reason; so i never blame the actor. And i certainly NEVER would send hate to said actor. Its low, childish, and adding a racial angle is bullshit. Just don't attack the actor, for Christ's sake! For example, within the same movie, Ewain MacGregor played Obi Wan Kenobi. Now, i love Ewain, and Obi Wan is hands down one of my top three favorite characters from star wars. So you would think "match made in heaven", right? No. I thought Ewain's portrayal was quite flat. It reminded me rather of Sprite after sitting out for a day. Which i found odd for a man who i believe is quite a good actor! Same with Liam Neeson. So, back to my original point, I'm sure Ahmed Best is a great character actor (i don't believe I've seen any other work from him), and I'm a casual star wars fan (only saw the movies) so I'm not butthurt over mythos tweaking, i just disliked Jar Jar. No more, no less.

Dude jar jar was my favorite character. He is a badass. The amount of enemies he took out is incredible.

I was also considered a pariah among people at a young age, and even to this day, in things from my career path to my religious affiliation I get downplayed and mocked from time to time, but I strive for good humor and earnestness, just like Representative Binks.

When Episode 1 came out, I was pretty young (10 years old or something). And I remember that my grandparents and I were on a skiing trip and they brought the Phantom Menace to entertain the young me. I don't remember much about the trip except watching the movie 4 times and that I always laughed about Jar Jar and that my grandfather imitated you to make me laugh.

I never understood the Jar Jar Binks hate. I think if you didn't grow up with 4, 5, and 6 Jar Jar isn't too disconnected from the rest of the story. When I was a kid I thought he was funny.

Jar Jar and kid Anakin got hate because they were tonally unmatched with the rest of the franchise, and this is the director's responsibility.
That said, nobody could have predicted the rage of the "fans", as we are witnessing with The Last Jedi.

But TLJ isn't one of the saga's stronger movies.
The pacing seemed off, the Canto Bight arc could have been written out with minimal effect on the story, Rose's character contradicted herself (which obviously doesn't justifying harassing the actress), choreography was iffy (you can watch a detailed breakdown on TH-cam just by searching "The Last Jedi Choreography"), and they seemed way more focused on making Kylo relatable than Rey.
There's more, but I don't want to turn this into a rant if I can avoid it.

I grew up with the prequels, and even though, with hindsight, I understand why Jar Jar was so hated by people, I want to thank that guy for contributing to my early teenage years.
He did a great job with the character I love jar jar the way the character is he didn't deserve the hate and glad to see he's doing well

@@fallapi the plan was to have him be like yoda in the original three star wars movies but some fans didn't find him funny or entertaining so the character ended up being made fun of and George Lucas ended up changing his plan for the character in episode 2 to where he's barely in it at all

Imagine growing up with Star Wars, being completely in love with the franchise and then you’re approached by someone saying they want you to be a character in the upcoming Star Wars prequel, you’re involved in this almost religiously renowned franchise and then boom. You’re character just so happens to be the most hated character in not just Star Wars history but probably in cinema history. No wonder he was suicidal. God bless this man for powering through it

JTLAAIRSOFT It's an amazing story of human perseverance and courage but it doesn't change the fact Jar Jar is easily the most hated character in the Star Wars franchise and one of the most hated in cinema history. It doesn't matter what I or you think, it's about what the majority of the human population think. I personally don't blame him in the slightest the culprits are George Lucas ( writer and creator of Star Wars and the JarJar character).

The film had far more serious problems than JarJar. I know that Lucas was hit very hard by this, too, though. I confess that I still have no idea what Lucas was trying to do with the film, or how it was meant to relate to the Trilogy. I have great respect for Lucas, and he's said that he was wholly sincere with the films. Maybe he has articulated it somewhere.

Lol almost all the actors in every star wars film has had this problem and it doesn't have anything to do with viciousness of fans. It's because their image is too iconic to the characters they play because the character gets bigger than them, the only ones that can manage to rise above it have a higher profile prior to those films to begin with. It's like when you stop being "Samuel L Jackson" and become "Mace Windu" and everyone refers to you as "Mace Windu", this royally pissed him off by the way because it put his career in jeopardy, it makes you incredibly hard to cast in other roles. This is the very thing that screwed up Carrie Fischer.

Carl Weathers redeemed him in the Mandalorian Season 3 episode 4 by making him the jedi that saved Grogu.
He did not need any redemption. You said that it redeemed him implies that he had done something wrong in the past which I disagree. Sure, people hated his character but it’s not his fault. He was only told to play the character. It’s good that he got to be recasted as a jedi and all but the only redemption we seek are the fans who harassed him to the point of having these suicidal thoughts

Love you Ahmed. I'm an original Star Wars fan from 77. I love all things Star Wars and it sickens me to hear about and see the absolute darkness and hate and racism spewed by a small toxic but very vocal part of the fandom. The fandom menace. What happened to him has happened to others in Star Wars movies as well. It's ok not to like or enjoy a piece of art. Art of all kinds is a subjective medium. It's not ever ok to attack the artist or fans of the art or artists. Critique the art if you must but please don't do it in a toxic way. Or just follow this old rule. If you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all.

Living in LA as a 20-something actor, the amount of times I got super SUPER close to getting on major films and t.v. shows and being told "it went to the other guy" for the 240th time... dude I can't imagine finally booking one of the biggest franchises on the planet just to have the world turn on me. Glad you pulled through, Ahmed. (Your character made me super happy when I was a kid, by the way. Jar Jar didn't have to appeal to everyone, but I distinctly remember smiling the most when your character came on screen.)

I loved Jar Jar as a kid. Now that I am older and have friends who are of Jamaican decent, I can understand why people dislike the accent. The character is too close to a minstral show.
George Lucas deserves the blame though. This actor didn't choose that accent.
When I was a teenager I took some LSD for the first time and started to freak out. My buddy had a Jar Jar Binks/Gungan submarine LEGO set and for some reason the thought “why do Gungans need subs if they can breathe underwater?” just took over my mind and killed all the fear and paranoia that had consumed my mind. The thought of Jar Jar Binks swimming underwater and being a goofball was all I could think about. I started to feel okay again. I started to smile. A moment before I felt like I was trapped in a nightmare and you helped pull me out of it. It might not sound like a big deal but in that moment your portrayal of Jar Jar Binks saved me from pure terror. I’m older and sober now but I still vividly remember that day and I just wanted to put it out there how much it meant to me that your character had such a positive effect on my soul that it pulled me out of a nightmarish drug trip. I’m glad you’re alive and happy man.

1. Once I sobered up it wasn’t nearly as philosophical as I thought. Like someone said, people have cars even though they can walk. But in that moment it was one of the funniest thoughts I’ve ever had.
2. This is not a joke, this sequence of events and thoughts really happened.
3. I don’t think EVERYBODY would benefit from taking LSD or Mushrooms at least once, but I think many many people would greatly benefit from the experience.
4. Taking LSD doesn’t just turn you into an insane extremist if you’re an intense person...things happen and people freak out but I don’t think it’s affects people like you’re imagining it does. Also, it’s best to have somebody you are comfortable with who is sober to supervise you during a trip, especially if you’re inexperienced.

Dealing with depression can be so hard and you are to be commended for sharing your experience.
