A lovely video. I will always have fond memories of Barmouth. When I was a little lad we used to come on holiday 2 or 3 times a year. Originally in a touring caravan which we pitched at Vanner Abbey Farm about 8 miles up the estuary. Then we had a static caravan at the same site from about 1971 I believe. Even though both my mother and father have since passed the caravan is still there as one of my brothers maintains and uses it.
The highlight of my holiday was the daily trip into Barmouth where I would spend most of the day helping the ferrymen who operated small ferries over to the Fairbourne narrow gauge railway on the opposite side of the estuary. I'm not sure if they still operate now.
    Many memories there.
If anyone remembers the Daily Mirror I think had an offer on for a small polystyrene sailing boat very small and stubby my father got one for entertainment purposes and it lasted quite well until the one time we arrived at Barmouth and found some drunk I suspect had put their foot through the bottom. From then on it was a submarine.
Anyway thank you for the video it was nice to see all the familair views and locations. Enjoy your holiday.

      Brilliant stuff Jonathan.
The little ferry is still going.
I was stood watching it a few days ago. Had quite a few people on it too going backwards and forwards.

Many thanks for the video. Like yourself I love Barmouth and especially the estuary I holidayed in Arthog a little way down the estuary and used to kayak down the estuary many times whilst on holiday. Keep up your good work.

    Thanks Paul.
I must admit I was shocked at how bad the bridge looks !!
    Have a great holiday.

Have been to Barmouth, but never across the bridge. The metalwork needs renewing it seems in places, with all that flaking rust on some of the girders. There did used to be a weight restriction on that bridge at one time, and the Great Western Railway's larger steam locomotives were restricted from using the bridge, and yet, in recent years, Class 37 diesel electric locos of over 100 tons have crossed it! It was great to see the mechanism that was in conjunction with the operating of the former swing bridge. Anyhow, I can see how much you must have enjoyed you holidays with your Mum and Dad, when you were younger, as it really is a beautiful area. Many thanks for this video showing.

      👌🙂
I believe it was restricted to DMUs until its last refurb but I know excursions and all sorts are using it. Though with a severe speed limit. Hopefully they get their welding torches on it before it becomes "too expensive to repair "

Nice one mate. The bridge looks like it does need a bit of tlc. Hopefully Network Rail will sort it. I’ve never been to Barmouth it looks like a good place to stay. Might have to wander that way in the summer. Thanks for taking on this lovely walk. Have a good week. 👍🏻🚶🏻‍♂️🚶‍♀️

Walked across it myself last week, always a cracking walk.
On your video just before the toll House there's a speed restriction sign that reads 35, apparently that's the only one in kilometres on the network (my mate is a driver for LNER) so a unique feature.
Another great video, looking forward to seeing your next one on the area I know and love.

Thanks for this video. As a train anorak; I've always wondered how the swing bridge actually works. Now I know that it takes four big Welsh lads with a handle each and a bucket of grease. I've only ever seen one photo of the bridge open, so it must have been rare.

😄 that paints quite a picture doesn't it. Amazing use of physics really.

When I was a kid living in Melton Mowbray we took a steam train 'mystery day out' and ended up in Barmouth, I remember it being a lovely little town with a beautiful beach. You rightly point out that the bridge is a bit rusty, and in need of some TLC, but if they are still using it then I suppose it must be ok. I hope you and your family had a nice relaxing break.

Cheers Seamus. We're here till this Friday. Still lots to do (and film).
I remember my dad telling me stories about excursion trains called Merry Makers that went to Wales, Cornwall and all over the country for the day. That's how they first discovered Barmouth.

The steel section is all being replaced in september this year september-december i think the timber and rail was replaced last year september-december again its all being done as part of a 3 year refurb plan and the trains seem to sound alot smoother on the new rail too

Unfortunately the new bridge will not swing. It would need a modern-day mechanism, buried under a mountain of 'elf and safety.
