  • I'm really pleased to be bringing you this latest video - A Trip Across the Beautiful, Scenic Barmouth Bridge, Wales. This bridge is located in one of my favourite parts of the UK and it's a testament to its construction that, for more than 150 years, it's battled the elements in order to maintain the link between Machynlleth and Pwhelli on the Cambrian Coast line.
The weather was fantastic for this trip and I managed to capture two or three trains aswell. Sadly, the old swing section of the bridge is no longer used but I'll tell you all about that, the overall history and future plans in this video.
I really hope you guys like it and, if you have, please consider a 'like and subscribe' to the channel. Don't forget, I'm now posting content every week at around 6pm on a Friday.
    Cheers for now!

Great to see the old bridge again. I was born in barmouth, lived in fairbourne and now live in the USA. I walked and cycled over that bridge so many times as a kid . Those were the days !

A very interesting video with good views of the bridge. It's also good that you displayed the map at the beginning. Nowadays you wouldn't expect that there has been a real railway triangle.

Hi Dirk, great to hear from you! Yes, one of my favourite spots in the world this - such amazing scenery and a testament to the engineering skills of the people who built the bridge that it’s survived much longer than some of the lines that formed the original triangle at the junction. All the best!

Thanks AFUK. Yes if you ever get the chance it’s worth it. As you can see, I didn’t even go on the train this time, I just parked in the Morfa Mawddach car park and walked it. I’ve been on the Cambrian Coast line many times though as it’s quite local for me and just love the journey - in all weathers!!

Absolutely beautiful! I mean, I knew the bridge existed by seeing it on a map, but the scenery makes it all the more worth visiting.

Yes and the weather certainly helped on this visit. I’ve had some really wild walks across there in the past! What I normally would do is get off at Morfa Mawwdach, walk across the bridge then along the beach in Barmouth to Llanaber (another request stop) and catch the train again from there. Or you can walk into the hills behind Barmouth which have some terrific views. Doing that got me back into walking a few years back.

Fantastic video. We walked along the bridge and back last summer and it is a unique experience.

Yeh, cheers - a bit of a spur of the moment thing really at Easter, just had my old phone with me so it's come out reasonably well considering.

Very interesting and uber scenic video! What an absolutely stunning location! 🤯 2.00 - I believe this TVM type block marker post signifies in cab signalling, which would replace a coloured light signal to proceed onto the bridge? Might explain why only certainly units fitted with ERTMS level 2 equipment can now be used.

    • @LetsMakeaTrip
      @LetsMakeaTrip  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, when you think the views out to sea are good then turn to look up the estuary to the mountains with Cader Idris and they’re even better! I look forward to an in-depth discussion on ERTMS level 2 equipment in a couple of weeks time 😉

i never knew you could walk across! Oh my goodness how have i missed that one? My favourite walk is across the cob at Porthmadog, not because it's better but because i've been going there since i was a small kid. I guess like me, when you visit places you used to go to as a child you get this incredible sense of 'homecoming'. At least i do anwyay!

I walked over the Cob only a few weeks back. Great views and even better when the FR is running. Barmouth Bridge and the scenery is more spectacular imo but I love Porthmadog - I’ll probably retire there.

I'm a new subscriber so I'm working my way thru the back catalogue! I thought I'd leave a comment about bridges you can walk down with the trains next to you.. not exactly a bridge but the Pier at Ryde on the Isle of Wight is fairly legendary with train enthusiasts! It's definitely in need of some work but the walk along it is gorgeous!! Would love to see you down south one day! If you're ever in or around Portsmouth or the Isle of Wight, I'll happily pay for a beer!! 😁😁

Hi Jimmy, last time I went down to the IoW, I'd been to watch Shrewsbury at your place (I think we won believe it or not - 2014/15 season) and a fox ran across the pitch! Lovely ground btw. I then went across on the ferry and we did go on the old tube trains, though I definitely didn't walk the pier. Mind you that was way before I did this youtube thing and i have been looking at an excuse to go back. Was thinking of the hovercraft next time. that would be quite good fun I'm sure!

@@LetsMakeaTrip Do it!! Would love to have you back down south! Fratton Park is nice little ground! Old school but gets pretty loud on it's day!! Hovercraft is super fun (its the only passenger hovercraft in the world, don't you know!!) 😁😁

Haha, thanks Peter. I do play so maybe I could make my own soundtracks! Tbh, I drove there for a family day out, forgot the sd card for my proper camera, did everything on foot and resorted to using my old iPhone! So it was a bit of a ‘made-up’ kind of day but the weather was so nice it was worth it I think. All the best, Mark

The Cambrian coastline is my favourite route in the uk. I think the swing bridge was last opened in 1987. And network rail are restoring the entire bridge between now and 2023. They started on the wooden parts October last year. And yes I’m sure that only class 158s and 97s can run on the Cambrian line due to signalling. I originally thought it was due to weight but no some class 97 freight trains use it sometimes

Hi Thomas and thanks for the comment. Yes when I did this a few weeks ago there was a big banner by the old toll booth telling everyone what was going on (though nobody was working on it at the time). Sad the toll house is derelict now, I’m not sure if it’s part of their plans tbh. I live near the line in Shrewsbury and often see/hear the 97’s going past. Would love to see them on the bridge that would make a great photo!

Looking up the Mawddach Estuary from the bridge is said to be the second most beautiful view in Britain.
