Good follow up on both. Field medicine is not hospital medicine. Things just take longer to resolve and usually require more follow up. They both look good. I hope the viewers appreciate your step by step videos.

What a wonderful man, so kind and caring with your cows. I've been around cattle owners before and all I've seen is cruelty and brutality. People need to learn from you. It stands to reason if the cattle are not afraid then they are less likely to panic and turn and run over you or bounce a gates off of you. This old woman commends you, love love your videos. Thank you, God bless!!

Never actually noticed hoof care until I started watching videos on cows. Coming up one only concerned themselves with a food when there was an obvious concern. I see now it really should be a part of a routine wellness such as worming. Interesting.

I didn't have even a head gate. We had to rope to a stout post. Then rope her bad leg, stretch it out, then treat her with good ole Koppertox. Always worked pretty quick. With animals, there's always injuries. Now that I'm older, I'm the one always with injuries!! Lol!!!

The reason they put medications in certain containers could be for a few reasons:
    1. Cost of glass vs plastic
    2. Availability of glass or plastic
    3. Some medications aren’t compatible with glass or plastic
    4. The reason to put air into the bottle just makes drawing up easier if the medication is thick. What goes in must come out.
    Great video!!!

Just an add on…the color or tint of glass or plastic….some medications deteriorate faster when exposed to light

Sorry, if you’ve already looked off camera, but I’m surprised you didn’t lift the calf’s hoof to thoroughly examine its hoof. Just to ensure there wasn’t any issues beyond the hoof rot.

Loved using Kopertox on my sows when they needed hoof care! Works great! (Used it on my finger nails too LOL)
The reason you DON'T want to insert air into the glass bottle is that you are introducing contaminants to the contents! Its okay if your going to use the entire contents within 12 - 24 hours but any longer and it is not a good idea. My vet said that even though its a pain in the butt to draw out the contents, its better to deal with that struggle then the problems that may be introduced to the future animals receiving that medication!

    • @radiomandelbrot5868
      @radiomandelbrot5868 2 ปีที่แล้ว

My endocrinologist and pharmacist have both instructed me to put air in my medication bottle before drawing it with my syringe, and it's a medication that can be used for over a month. So I really don't understand why the vet would've said that. Do you guys use sterile equipment to draw the medicine from the bottle? Do you disinfect the top of the bottle before plunging the syringe? Maybe it has to do with the fact that my medication is in oil rather than water or another medium? Or maybe it's because my meds are injected subcutaneously rather than intramuscular such as they often seem to be in cattle? I'm confused by the advice you received.

  • @seajay20

Thanks for the update. As for the foot rot, I'd never heard of that before (before I'm a city girl). I've recently been watching hoof doctors for both cows & horses, respectively (although they're not called that for horses, but ferriers, etc). It's fascinating the issues with them. I didn't know that cows needed their hooves trimmed. Anyway, I'll google foot rot. It looks painful. I have had multiple painful foot conditions, so I was empathising with her limping so badly. It's horrible having to walk when weight-bearing on the sore foot, etc is so inflamed. Poor thing.

What we used to do with them when they had a big abscess like that of course was drain it just like you did, and then we would pack it full of furacin gauze. That way you could remove the gauze every few days and pack new gauze in it. The Furacin will kill the bacteria and let it heal from the inside out and we didn't have to worry about it closing up and getting another abscess.

    Hey Tyler.
    Love your channel!
Not trying to be an ass hat know it all here. Only trying to be helpful. But coming from a nurse..... when you're taking any amount out of a vial, you always want to put as much air in as liquid you're removing. So.... if you're going to give a 10 cc injection.... you always put 10cc of air in prior.
    Also....
If you'd like more really great ideas on gif treatments for cows... you should check out the "Hoof GP". He has some really geat video also!!

    Farmer Tyler 🐂
Hosing down the cow on a hot day was kind of you the cow will remember that and remember the experience as a cool down with the water hose . I think the cow liked the water hose 🐂💦👍
As a kid I remember visiting my dad on the weekend in a little town called piru in CA. It was about a one hour drive from where I lived with my mom. My dad took me to lake piru where he knew a person who was going to do some hunting for deer. I went along with them and seeing how it was done I also seen how tick infestation in the animal's ear canal was shocking. I wonder how you keep the cows ear canals clean from flea and tick infestation? 🐂🦌

Would the maggots eat the dead tissue? It would help clean the wound. We use this to treat human wounds. Kind of gross but effective debridement.

I wonder if washing their feet weekly with oregano oil mixed with a carrier oil, maybe even vaseline, would help Tyler? It’s a powerful powerful antibiotic, anti fungal, anti everything really.
It’s a hot oil so can’t be used on skin straight or open wounds straight, but diluted down it can be. Phenomenal stuff, be interested to know if it works on cow hooves like it does human fungal nails.

FTR: the common bacteria Fusobacterium necrophorum is the most likely cause of foot rot in this heifer. In cattle ranching, what are the usual precautionary steps to prevent the spread to other cows? My uncle’s dairy practice was to isolate the affected cow and discard her milk while she was on antibiotics. Do you have something similar in your herd management plan? Respectfully, W.S.
