HUGE DIVE BOAT DRAGS INTO US AT ANCHOR!! 😲 (Episode 267)

  • While sailing around Stewart Island in New Zealand, a huge dive boat drags anchor for over 100 meters right into the side of our Catamaran, with a reef right behind both of us!
SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. We found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are now sailing across the Pacific Ocean!!

Thanks for the film and story of your expedition to the South of The South Island. I had the pleasure of visiting Puysegur Point Lighthouse, Easter 1967, for a few weeks, whilst it was "Manned". My Uncle and family lived and worked on the light. I flew in from Invercargill, on a Gruman amphibian, single engine, on a mail flight, that I waited in Invercargill for about a month, to get a weather window for the flight and sea landing about 2-3 miles up the Fiord from the boat shed/ landing. I came backout on the annual supply boat (Warau,I think!!), after dropping supplies at Centre Island, in life boats to the beach. My "job" on station was to fill the larder. which was very easy catching crayfish, scallops. fishing, and shooting a deer or two on the track. This was a most memorable time in a Wild, and then also dead calm environment, second to none. I was amazed that you and your crew were awe stuck with this regions beauty and awesomeness!! Thanks for the memories and your great documentaries of Kiwi's exploring the world and our own gems. I look forward to you stories of Fiordland. Safe travels and fair breezes. RJT, Ayr, Qld, Oz. But still a proud Kiwi!

WOW!! All the build-up to making that passage and it was all a big nothing burger. How did the forecast end up being so inaccurate? I'm thinking that while they have forecasts and modeling for the wind, maybe there is no data in that area for swell/wave height and spacing.

Most people don't get how much of a pain even a little damage to the boat is when out cruising . A bent and busted Stanchion can not only be dangerous at sea if it takes out the life lines but is near impossible to replace on location .A small glass repair is not so bad , in that it can be repaired on site as long as you carry repair epoxy like Colin and is just ugly for a while .

If you are looking for episode ideas, I’d love one that explains some of the nitty-gritty details, how do you pick your crew, how long can they stay, how do you figure out who pays for what, have you ever had to kick anyone off??? As a retired nurse I’m also always interested in the medical side of things, your episode on the fire ants just about gave me heart failure! What do you have for medical kits? How about health insurance? What do you do if someone gets appendicitis or a toothache on the high seas? Thanks for your great editing work!

Thank you once again for sharing your beautiful country with us. It truly is stunning to see how remote and protected it is. The crayfish at the end made my mouth water, it looked delicious. As you were telling us about this area I noticed you seemed really emotional 0:12 by the beauty, and then when you said it was bringing you to tears I couldn’t help but cry. This is the perfect way to celebrate our July 1 Canada Day.

Wow!! 5:14…. 15,528 emails and 362 text messages 😅 😂 Colin! You’re way too popular or busy. (With dragging boats)
I suspect you’re having way too much fun 🎉. Happy for you and the gang. It’s the only way to live! Cheers!

So stoked to see next week's episode on Fiordland!! Wanted to hike into it when I was there - I think a 10 day track at the best of time, but unfortunately I was there in autumn and the route was just too swamped. Has always remained at my list but now I can live vicariously through you! ❤

This episode hit home, as we got hit with a major storm in Maryland, USA. We did not drag(thank God) but our anchor alarm app kept going off saying we dragged 182m. Is the app you use just called anchor alarm? I would love to check out the exact app you use. As always, love watching your travels! Be safe

Migi's are torture but look at the anchorage, only a brave sailor ventures into Fiordland. Bare poles sailing back up the West Coast if the weather catches you out, thankfully you'll have PLENTY of sea room and almost guaranteed following wind and seas, the Tasman has a mighty reputation for VERY good reason.

Grew up in Bridport Tasmania.Know Mutton Bird well .Used to go mutton bird hunting with the local fishermen. Very dangerous ,lots of venomous snakes. It’s an incredible migrating bird. You should only the chicks ,about the size of a quail. Mostly bones and thigh meat. That bird was way too big,too old and too mature. Best way is to BBQ and always eat with pickled onions. It is indeed an acquired taste and if prepared correctly ,a unique delicacy. The meat is dark and oily and very strong in flavor. Pickled onion is a must

I know this post isn't about surfing. BUT, I was watching another post where they were surfing and after I left their channel an old 60 ish surfing song came to mind about hanging 10 and walking the nose. Because I've watch you guys surfing a lot I thought I would ask surfers..ie.. you guys.. Is hanging 10 and walking the nose still a thing surfers do or ever did... just wondering Thanks for listening wishing you all Fair winds and following Seas

One observation: @2:10 personal experience sharing of the situation stards, loud, even if the situation is still unclear. Is the whole crew there, did someone fall overboard? Same on the other boat(s)?
The crew communication should be very disciplined until the situation has declared to be clear by the chief. Just to keep "channel clear" for a) observations b) commands.

Oops! Nice recovery! Next time, rig at least four fenders regardless of where you're anchoring or docking. Excellent coverage of the legal liability of commandeering another's vessel and the wisdom of anchor-dragging alarms.

It is truly beautiful and so remote. Reminds me of Port Davey on the SW of Tasmania, similar scenery and weather. You can only get there by boat or walking for 5 days, also a very special place. A few tiny planes can ferry in or out the walkers.

    Lol soft as Bro !
I thought Mutton bird was national dish !
You eat the mustard from cray heads and Urchins eggs but couldn't handle the chicken !
As for Jamie , embarrassed to call him an Aussie
    Toughen up 😂
