You have become my favorite shooting channel. I'm 73 years old and did not begin shooting sporting clays until I was 63. So I'm not to the best as far as sight or reflexes. So I try to compensate for those issues. I shot an 87 during a practice round for an NSCA registered shoot. That's a good score for me and I felt like I was shooting well.
At the tournament, they had fast and far targets, and some true pairs that I was not quick enough to shoot. That really brought into focus the handicap I have with my poor eyesight and slow reflexes. I shot a 54. That taught me to avoid those tournaments and let the younger guys participate.
Right there with you on the late age discovery of the sport.
I find committing to the break points and hold points are the main focus of planning. I believe planning my break points and hold points dictate my lead method without thinking about which method to use. It simplifies my pre-shot routine. Worrying about lead methods to me is like worrying about changing chokes on every station.
The ShotKam is a great tool that gives me feedback on how I react to the target. If the target is beating my barrel to the breakpoint then I know to move my hold point closer to breakpoint to give me control over the target.
As someone who usually hits 23/24 on skeet and 90 ish percent on a good day sporting I find myself at the top of what I can achieve without really grinding and taking shooting super seriously.
Problem is I don't have that sort of money, and I don't want to ruin the main reason I shoot, which is to have fun and relax

@@dandylion1987 I'm fighting with consistency. i have 21/25 and 14/25 rounds. So having 23/24 in a Harder discipline is really awesome.
@@JohnSmith-dg3rd I'd just say try to break the clay in the same spot every time. I tended to miss over the clay alot on my high towers and once I sorted that it helped alot
I know the feeling. Up until 2yrs ago I shot and stayed around 85-97 on any course we went too. Covid hit now shells have doubled. By the time you factor in everything it's $200 for 2 rounds of sporting. Since then I've shot trap and games at my local club just because it's alot cheaper but atleast keeps me from getting extremely rusty lol.
I believe tight chokes have made you a great shot! I have been afraid of tight chokes and have been shooting 1/4 &1/4. I find that I don't concentrate as well with loose chokes and depend on the larger margin of error. Now, I train with full/full and compete with mostly 1/4 & 1/4.
Has Ed had a chance to review your findings.
I learned a lot from your video with Ed regarding making a plan before shooting. This video showed me that I clearly have a long way to go! BTW, Shotkam...yes please!

The shotkam prices are discounted here in the US as well. I just ordered 2 Gen 4 cams (one for me and one for my dad). Also, I like to practice with full chokes. I truly think it makes me a better hunter. I enjoy your videos! keep'em coming!

Great video on testing your ability. I have a ShotKam Gen 3 that I use for the same measurement of ability - planned spots and repeatable spots. Spots as in hold point and break point. The ShotKam doesn't lie. It has helped me improve a lot over the last two years. It does add weight to the barrel but I have learned to handle it. I learned there are no "easy" targets just some more "routine" than others. I can miss at any time if I lose my focus or control. One comment about videos - I also look for gun/barrel management - consistent and smooth swings. No jagged up and downs as I swing the gun. Second, target / muzzle alignment with the technique I want to use to break the target. You are good shot even if you fumbled on a few targets. You hit long crossers that I can only wish to hit! 90/100 don't be to hard on yourself JC! Some nice shots there your gun did you well and vice versa. I have big prob's with lead on a target and sometimes when I go to shoot my brain sends a signal to my arms and I hit the clay, (Nice 1 Big pink squidgy thing up there). I really do need to shoot more as I was a fixed target rifle shooter for so many years and it is a difficult thing sometimes to get that fixed target thing out of your (Big pink squidgy thing) to remember moving targets at pace. A really good vid as usual and a big thumbs up for the quality of the film, narration and the excellent shooting ground. Looking forward to the next one. Good eggs all round!!!
this was very useful to me I’m okay not great, and I really enjoy how you explain come through or to a target the right way, I’m positive next time I go out I’ll re-watch this and try some of the moves. AS ALAWYS WELL DONE (as long as you don’t poke fun at my ruger lmao)

Great video Jonny. It would be good to see a video on your thought process when deciding what plan to go with on each one. Something I really struggle with, and then of course I improvise, and go horribly wrong. Which effin plan to stick to?
I understand. Your shooting is a lot like mine. It would be interesting to see Ed coaching you in this type of shooting video. I’m curious what he would say in some of those situations. You definitely need to do one of these videos again please.

Great video chaps, I interrogated my shotkam footage with a fine tooth comb when i first started but ive gotten very slack and been using it mainly for fun and vids, this may have given me a kick up the backside to get it out for some proper practice again 😂
Would love to see you do a comparison on the same targets with 1/4 chokes or maybe 1/4 & 1/2 using 7.5 shot. To score that high using full chokes and a 6.5 shot in my novice experience is exceptional.
Good battle. There is no enemy that knows you better than the one standing in your boots shooting your gun.
These solo matches of just you and him can be tough but very educational.

I hope that your look at my MK38 at the Pro One made you miss yours. I don't think i miss close targets because of choke, rather that I smoke distant ones because of choke. Three quarters and full work, just find the cartridge that patterns well. I hit 5 yard targets with full choke but I've not tried six & a halfs yet!
I tried a Shotcam but couldn't move the gun properly with that weight on the barrel.

They're not hard to hit... but they're easy to miss! I too, find my misses come from a lack of discipline. I struggle with target anxiety at the beginning of a scored course as well
Interesting film which really I think demonsrates the difference between the ''planners'' and the more natural shooters showing it is possible to achieve a good standard using a more regimented approach.I also happen to think certain disciplines like skeet hone the skills needed to excel in sporting/fitasc.
You are a good shot. I shoot many guns as well different gauges brand, types etc. I'd rather be able to shoot many guns well than just use one gun. It brings me joy. Does it hold back my score? of course. but I can shoot most anything just like you can. What brings more joy?

I hesitate but I don’t know but He made a comment about picking up the kids in the video; wife, kids vs. a £20k shotgun it’s a bit of a no-brained…. I had a boat once, got sold to buy a house….

An idea for your next challenge. No preview of the setup at each stand. Then rotate shooters at each new stand so everyone must shoot first at an equal number of stands without any knowledge of how the clays will fly.

I have purchased gen 4 shotkam beginning of the year, hepls a lot in training. One thing, I can’t download videos bigger than 3GB through WiFi. I've tried on iphone, ipad with iOS 17, laptop with Win10 and after 30-40% of downloading always the same "unknown error - try again". I have to connect with the usb cable, and then the camera is detected as external drive and can download bigger videos.
So what happens to the ragged out worn out old Longthorn? I bid $50 ?🤣🤣🤣. What is the new one? I agree with what most have said.
Johnny, do you have your shotkam calibrated for all the guns you shoot? Or do you calibrate them prior to filming the videos for the particular shotgun that you are going to use? I find the calibration part the biggest draw back from using my Shotkam.

Concentration or also known as complacency can be the demise of many a shooter. You mentioned a few times should have missed the easy clay/target. There is no such thing as an easy clat/target until it is broken. Yes some clays are easier to hit than others, but as the footage shows it is very easy to miss one of the so called easier clays without 100% concentration on every shot. This is the thing that sorts out the champions from us normal mortals. At the end of the day as long as you are having fun and breaking some clays then that is the important thing.

What I struggle with is trying to track the shot cloud to figure out where I'm pointing the gun, is there anything i can do to see this better? Im wondering if the 120fps footage from the Shotkam highlights this better than the naked eye from behind the gun?
As an owner of the gen 3 and gen 4, i can say that the 120 FPS does NOT let you see teh cloud better. Oddly... the Gen 3 shows the shot cloud much better. But the gen 4 is an awesome tool. so much better in every respect, EXCEPT... being able to see the cloud better.. not sure why, just is the case. Just my opinion, owning both

I love my Gen4 ShotKam. Great diagnostic tool for clays and just "cool" for duck and dove hunting! Regarding the topic. I strongly believe in the old saying, "Beware of the man with one gun." If I was serious in my competitive shooting, I'd adhere to this adage. However, I'm passed that stage in my shotgun shooting and I LOVE playing around with different guns. Variety is the spice of life!
Everyone says gen4 has 15 hours battery life but really I heard if its running on all the time only lasts 2 hours can anyone please let me know...because im on for buying one for duck shooting but having it on sleep mode is no good

Great video Johnny. Wish I’d seen this before last Saturday as my wife and I Can’t talk shitting at Barbury for the first time and this would have saved us so many missed clays. Really must sign up for one of your members days I think the last was in fact at Barbury if memory serves me correctly.

Can someone explain how you can shoot 6 1/2 when most grounds have a 7 1/2 maximum
That is a great question. Any ground that has CPSA comps should allow 6.5 shot sizes, everywhere else I have found that rule seems to be in place to stop people using game loads.
There is some concern with pellet fall out, 6.5 will carry a little further than 7.5, but this will only apply to grounds with very close neighbors

From watching a bunch of your videos it look like European targets are technical targets and American targets are more distance and speed. Is that a correct assessment?
Id say the opposite is true for the most part. The ground where we usually film throws closer technical targets most of the week and will soon step them out for competition days.
A part of the illusion might be that we show a lot more face or belly and the USA shows a lot more edge which gives the illusion of speed!

You obviously need the shotkam on your gun to make the video. However they add weight and alter the balance of the gun, which is not good.
Look at the title picture and ask yourself if this as the best you can do as a gun mounting technique. Is uncertain look how GD mounts his gun
I dislike those slow, floppy birds, to me they always look like a no bird which causes me to hesitate for a split second.
Jonny, You have developed the habit of taking the gun off your shoulder after the first shot and this is making you have to mount the gun in the correct place on your shoulder before taking the second shot. This is reflected in missing some of the second targets.
