    Ive been a professional auto technician for 40 years now. Started back in the 80s to present. Have seen the entire wave, from the 60s repairs to present. A carberator is the most reliable by far, especially singles. A lot less troubleshooting, vs plugging in a scanner, pulling codes, electrical diagnosis, so on. The manufacturers, and EPA have SCAMMED the world.. That's all ill say..

    You hit solid points on the subject I happen to agree fully. I have the same carb as Andrew on my 84 and its dead solid reliable I could daily that car if it had AC! And on the subject of how good a carb feels to drive, its the throttle response. Efi just dont compare in that department.

    I live carb for that instant response. Literally connected to the throttle. No waiting for the computer to tell the injectors to do something. Situations for both...

      A good in tune carb offers instant response. It reminds me of the direct injection systems in the newest cars throttle response is insane.

      Fuel injection with mechanical throttle like 2v new edges will give you the same throttle response. But I still prefer carbs over fi because they're pretty easy to tune by yourself without dropping 2 grand on a holley terminator or something

    That's what i hate about California. I've had 3 foxbodies. An 85, 91, and now an 88. I loved driving the 85. It was so much fun. The shitty part. You can't even legally change the carburetor. I'd love to get another 85, this time with T-tops. I can do pretty much any thing but that damn carb. I can't even have true duel exhaust... only 1 to 2. People say move out of California. Wish i could. Hoping for the legislation or a different governor that will bump up the year past 1975. I love my cars and guns. I'm not giving up.

      Well look at it this way, ur crappy governor just signed a bill you will not even be able to own a gas operated car in 2035. Just sayin 😉 Leave that liberal state and don't look back.🇺🇸...i should apologize sorry for putting down ur state it's beautiful, it's just the people running it, too much government involved.

      First off you can change carb as they make aftermarket carbs that at C.A.R.B approved . "I can't even have true duel exhaust." Funny I had that done to my mustang when I lived in California , no issues passing smog

  • @TheMailmanOfSteel

    You can always use an A/F sensor and gauge to tune a carb car, that's pretty much most the battle right there.

  • @ShaneHerald
    @ShaneHerald 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    the only reason people hate on the carb cars is because they dont know how to tune them up right ....i see a lot of people taking cars to the shops getting a tun up and carb adjusted and in there head its not right so they start dicking around with it and totally mess up the tun of it......i take all the efi junk off when i build a older car .....carb is the most reliable .......easy peasy to tune to .....most and biggest thing to get right is the choke adjustment!!...... if the choke is not set perfectly dont matter how you set the idle mixtures or anything else for that matter ......lol...easy...and i dont need a computer or a scanner to tell me why my carb car wont run to......fix it on the side of the road with duct tape and bailing wire ......lmao.....

  • @curlracing276
    @curlracing276 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I was a fuel injection guy till I threw a carburetor on my car and loved it. As long as it's a properly sized carb with the supporting parts it works great. I now have a blow through carburetor set up from csu and that carb was well worth the money. Same adjustments for the blow through carb just needed a boost referenced power valve and fuel regulator for the most part.

    I am at this very crossroads right now. I have an 89 GT, and I pulled the motor to address the shock towers. I was going to rebuild the original motor. I thought about a stroker kit, but instead for what the cheapest pre balanced 347 kit cost, I found a built 302..all new work and parts. Windsor Jrs, High comp pistons, flat face valves, street cam, etc etc. It came with a new edelbrock 4 barrel intake. So I was thinking at first to put the fuel injection on top of this (1974) 302...but I am leaning towards a carb at this point.

    Holley 4BBL fuel injection 600 - 1000+ HP makes more power than both EFI & carbs without the idle issues of old EFI or CFI, more fuel economy than a carb when cruising, it’s self learning & easily tunable for your power adders, better ignition setup and fuel setup. It’s even available in carb appearance for older carbed purists and sleeper cars.

    So I haven't had a ton of experience with Fox bodies although I do love them! I do have a ton of experience with the same year in f-150s. My 91 F-150 had a great setup of fuel injection that was robust enough that you could work on it but did give you the advantages of fuel injection. The engine's now shot because of an improper part made of the factory so I'm going to be throwing a carburetor on mine to make an engine swap a little simpler. I definitely look forward to tuning it up and getting the most out of it! One day I will return it back to the original EFI just because it ran so well but I do see where a lot of problems can occur especially in the little sensors. And idle air control sensor goes out every few months and it always leaves you on side of the road lol. Definitely a great video and who knows I might even want to get me a fox body!

    Carbs are ok wherever it doesn't get very cold. If it does get cold it's a different story.
    I grew up tuning carbureted cars and driving them in all kinds of weather. Two other things that mess with carbs are altitude and humidity changes. To keep one well-tuned you really need to stay on top of their tuning, because it can and will change from day to day. Yeah, you can go ahead and just drive them and it won't affect you much unless you are racing. That's where you can really see the differences, it's why racers always keep logbooks with temperatures and humidity recorded as well as other tuning information.
    Because of that, I'd choose EFI because it will pretty much tune itself in those instances.

    I do believe on you guys, i think EFI engine is perfect when its new and basic, but when your engine got aged or customized it then its true you can't make it perfectly stable. But on carbureted engines the only problems you will encounter is when it got dirty and very easy to clean after that ... booom it will run again like new!
    Thanks guys more power to your channel God bless

    Carbs are definitely a different story to get used to over EFI. If I'm going to build a race car. Carburetor is the way to go. Or, an existing street car set up for carburetors is also a learning experience to see how car run and make them work.

    I built a car similar to Andrew's in the mid 90's because of cost and lack of EFI knowledge it ran 10.50s in the quarter. I currently have a 89 coup with a fuel Injected 302 with a pony down turbo kit that i built in 2006 makes 525hp to the tire reliably. I personally think that the fuel injection is better more reliable but costs more.

    I don't own a mustang but the same type of issues are present on my '88 county squire. Yeah, a wagon. Still, i grew up during the carburetor and pionts era and spent the '80s turning wrenches till I became frustrated with the trend the big three and imports were on. Thanks for posting this vid. There is something to say for a car you can nurse home (carbureted) with relative ease compared to efi. 😎

  • @duster0066
    @duster0066 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another advantage to a carb build is wiring as in none. My 73 Duster has 5 engine wires fwd of the firewall (dist and alt) because I put everything else aft including the coil. Another advantage is maintenance as in it's a super clean installation. There are more fuel and oil lines running around up there than wires. However I love efi on a stock driver. Try getting a choke delete carb motor started in cold weather without a fire. A trick I learned on light airplanes and carb hot rods for cold weather starts. Prime the crap out of it then wait a minute or so. Let that liquid gas vaporize a while then crank it. It wont stop all carb or air box fires, but it does reduce the chances because the engine has some vapor to run on.
    oops forgot the starter, 2 more wires.

    EFI vs CARB is the decision I'm in the middle right now. Building a long rod 306 N/A for a road race track day car. Have the entire 97' Explorer drive train as my base to build from. Upgrading the stock items to produce the power I'm after will cost as much or more than switching to a decent carb set up... and I could still sell the stock items to recoup a few bucks. However cost alone is not the important factor.

    Coming back to This video in a dilemma my thought process was to get my car running on carb to keep my motivation to finish up the car. 92 Lx hatch 4cyl right now have a Lincoln mk7 90 block I have gt40ps and a e 303 cam

    One of my most viewed videos is why I went carb on my 347 car. But my 331 fuel injected car already outran it and I haven’t even began to touch the potential of it 🤷‍♂️. I love a 4 barrel engine though. Nothing but love

      I liked watching your 4 cyl notch swap to the BluePrint 347. I bought a BluePrint 408 from the Summit clearance rack with the intention of swapping better heads and camshaft in it. I have not installed the 408 yet into my 90 LX. I just swapped the BluePrint 190 cc pedestal mount heads onto my 85 351w vert in place of iron GT40 heads. I cleaned up the bowls a little with a Dremel and sanding rolls. I found my crate engine had 15 leaking valves when I checked the valve seal by pouring gas in the ports and looking to see if it leaked past the valves. It took a while, but I got the valves to seal by lapping them in. Hoping for a big gain in hp with the new heads.

      @@sbf_fox2434 wow, the valves were that bad!? I know they're cheap heads, but geez that's rough. I have BPE heads on my 331 car, but only because they're cheap. If I can get my channel to take off and get some extra income, I would def love to drop a 408 in my car and see how far we can take it. Glad you liked the swap! I wish I never got rid of that car...dumb move from me for sure

    I agree on the carb setup but you can get a rich idle when running a moderate cam and if it auto spin the money and get the 4r70 and a us shift and you can drive where you want to

    The 1.7 rockers increase the lift on the cam over the stock 1.6 ratio. So it will sound more radical because technically it is. Not sure the of the exact increase though.. edit... just saw a video that stated the 1.7's increase the B cam lift to around .512. Someone else replied .510.!

    How did you get the AC to work in the carb swapped car? I swapped mine to a carb and I thought I needed a new AC system but there's a sensor for the throttle body I think. How did you get it to work?

    My car is carb swapped takes it a bit to start once it warms up tho it’s turn and go. Also curious what did your son do for the return? I have never had a problem back in the day with mine ever doing anything but one day after I filled the tank and turned the car off it poured fuel out the return line. I need to figure something out. I got it plugged right now but for piece of mind I’d like to have a line ran.
