The difference between someone trained in knife fighting and someone who isn't is about 18% survival, what I noticed was his other arm not protecting his chest, there is a difference between civilian training to commando training, great video would love to see techniques with blade the other way round 👍👍
A few basic moves you can perform perfectly is 99% of it. The goal is to stop an attack and get away quickly, so the slashing serves as a clearing move to stop any aggressor. This makes allot more sense than allot of other techniques ive seen ....
As a woman, I really really appreciate these videos. Everyone says if you get into a conflict in public to just run away, give them your money, etc. but what of the conflict is because that man is trying to assault me and what he wants is my body? men are naturally faster runners than women how am I supposed to escape? Imma have to fight 😂
This is really similar to a lot of european sabre forms, particularly dussack (which is of a similar size and sometimes shape to many filipino swords) as well as polish sabre (which relies on rapid cross cuts).
Practising 3 or 4 moves is fantastic, it allowed me to get to the skillset to train with/beat all opponents on the Canadian Olympic Judo Team. Awesome video!
I was in a knife fight once and went for 2 slash and a thrust move and he lowered his head and instead of his eye it got him in the forehead left a arrowhead shaped gash between his eyes . I injured my wrist with that move and had to switch hands which allowed me to plunge the blade in the back of his neck because changing hands threw him off balance when he was thrusting at me south paw . Saved my ass lucky to go home .
Training knives seem to emulate the Applegate Boker F/S, likely the best combat knife (in the boot knife or less size) you can carry. Too bad they are 400+ damn dollars... I mean I've searched deep and 199 as a price exists. Still though. One of the best self defense knives IMO are Ka Bar's TDI series, the pistol grip knives. LEO use them for a reason. Takes very little skill to use. Got a wharncliffe benchmade version for cheap (relatively speaking, 80 bucks) but considering the design used to be owned by HK and that it will never be made again... Benchmade just basically came out with the folder version (far worse for self defense)... I fear fucking it up, using it hard. Got a 6 inch folding dagger from cold steel on sale for 34 bucks... thing actually fits in normal pockets but it is an easy way to get legal trouble. Clinchpick by shivworks is in my sights now. And the Tops Felony Stop... has a grip profile similar to the fencing grip I've used. I wonder how much of foil fencing actually translates to knife sparring... would have to ask.. idk first place I think to go to is a Krav Maga guy.
After 20 years in maximum security prisons and living in the six Rivers National Forest near an Indian reservation I don't really care if somebody nicks my carotid or femoral artery. It's just sport or business and I'm going to die one day anyway not knowing i ever lived like a blade of grass or raccoon or star. Most people are too scared and too stupid to realize that, and they care about their arteries. Gives me an edge. A video is a video. Being alone in the woods out of cell will show one who one really is-larger than life or most likely a coward thinking he'd rather be baking cookies with his mother. If a person waxes me they won't be the type that brags about it. They will eat eggs as if nothing happened. And it will be a long time before he finds someone else to put up that kind of resistance in today's society and he will become probably depressed. If he has a close partner like that he may giggle with him/her about it a little later like a college prank. Women love those kind.
Why using a rubber knife? Train with the knife you will use. I carry an Italian stiletto switchblade. Hides in my pocket and deploys quickly. Razor sharp. It’s what I practice with. I alternate between that and a Benchmade automatic knife.
Watching a actual fighting technique be used with a knife is terrifying. We always see videos of knife attacks where it just some gurriers throwing stabs - But this? Good god.
Just incase you dont know a knife is one of the hardest weapons to defend yourself from if it has a handgaurd that is! You most likely get stabbed once no matter what!
I'm gonna put this out there, getting stabbed REALLY hurts, trust me. My old step father agreed with me, I got stabbed by a friend's girlfriend when she went after him through the passenger side of a car, I was the passenger, she stabbed me in the arm, deeply. My stepfather got stabbed in the back with a sharpened screw driver in high school, he said it hurt worse than being shot, he was a...motorcycle enthusiast that rode with a group of like minded individuals...with bottom rockers and a patch that said 1%...
In theory anything is legit, but in the way he’s showing it unless you already have prior training in some form of martial arts. He’s not actually showing any footwork or technique, it’s not against a resisting opponent, and it’s kinda incoherent. Anybody can waive a knife around but if he had a target at least we could see his precision, speed, and timing. Like this we just see a bunch of arm swinging and 1,2 boom.
Never trust any martial arts instructor who doesn’t at least show you footwork, as well as counters and potential openings to look for. Shadow boxing without any idea of what to look for won’t make for good training, how do you imagine something you haven’t seen before.
"18% survival advantage being trained vs. Untrained..." Yes. If only accounting for knife techniques. However... Combatives instructor here. 2 decades active experience, daily work in hostile environments. I divide combat into two types: Offensive objective and surviving an encounter. The former bases on the principle good weapons are felt and not seen, the later is based on avoiding as much conflict as possible. Both have one thing in common though.. influencing the elements of your environment (including you, the opponent, Awareness, pacing, objects, ect.) Your influence on your environment leverages the fight, the knife is only to finish it.
This guy is just waving it around teaching you how to make little slices, not even holding the knife the right way. That's not what you do. You squat low with your knees, in a with a phelly shell block, knife facing out in lead head and stick it in the thigh, gut, or back/kidney area. no slicing like this guy is doing. It isn't a sword fight. Squat and aim for a vital organ on your first swing.
Good tips for anyone. Including those wanting to harm innocent people like my or your family that is why this type of information was not shared with unknown and untrained individuals. That is a concern.
This man has never bee. In a real knife fight...never been cut.. I have... You use and to hand combat along with the knife... This is stupid... Sounds and looks cool but you will get killed... His speedy cuts mean nothing when you get bum-rushed in a violent way... This man can't even fight well don't do any of this goofy crap...

Then make one commando! 😂😂
The purpose for self defense weapons is to
Give you an opportunity to run away
Not really
To create the best opportunity for you to survive in any way possible

Thanks for the training!
As a boxer, I love learning the technique that goes into this (getting off center line, creating angles, etc.)
Push daggers are likely your friend... especially a pair that go into the same belt sheath?
Same man, its so interesting to see the difference and similarities
How do you deal with the stance, brother?
Good tecniques . I believe in the sort trusts and cut to distract before the real death trust. Great video.

Hi Paul! What do you think about adding a playlist of footwork's videos? I like the ones combining footwork and striking the best!

Where should my other hand be? Does it pay to be proficient in both hands and should I master one first then the other?
Anyone in 2025?

Yes, I’ve done lots of videos on that here 👍🏼

You probably should follow up with self treatment of wounds. Nervous players bleed out quickly.
Thanks for the video! 2 more weeks and I can go to London safety
Beautiful and wonderful, I learned to fight from you. I love you from Iraq 🇮🇶🗽🇺🇲
Great video Paul. Perfect timing as I will be receiving 3 of the 4 knives I recently purchased from Olie.
Excellent
As a boxer, how can I do knife combat in a southpaw stance? I face problems in your stance.
If basic works, use it. It's easier to master and remember.

Did he die?
With a grip like that you're not fighting anybody. This is a chef, not a knife fighter.
That's the best grip. You need to be a master if you want to use the inverted grip effectively.

I advise beginners to learn new skills with some kind of trainer for safety but at the end of the day, do whatever you want.
