Honestly, that Throne of Glass idea would be totally doable, the storyline like completely shifts to something totally separate and as long as you remember the third book you would be fine lmao (I say this as someone who acknowledges SJM books are not that great but still really enjoys reading them)

I think for the Throne of Glass series (which I ultimately liked more as a whole than ACOTAR), it just becomes such a different thing by the end that I do think it's worth seeing through. There are enough characters to care about and I was actually satisfied by the ending, and I'd be super interested to see your thoughts if you made a project of it. As for series that I've DNF'd: Wicked Saints (b/c I just thought the writing was bad when it came out), Caraval (which I also didn't care for the writing), Miss Peregrine (I didn't know it was a series till after I'd emotionally moved on), and the Frostblood Saga (the first book became a hate read to entertain my friends who actually loved it). There's a few more series that I'm probably never going back to, but it's largely because too much time passed and I don't want to reread anything to get back into.

    *Grisha spoilers* 🚨
I DNFed the Grisha trilogy right after finishing Seige and Storm (because of all the spoilers I read in tumblr back in the day; as an anti-Mal gal.)
As well as, I DNFed Six of Crows after finishing the first book (also because of spoilers I read on tumblr about my beloved favourite ship; Matthias and Nina.)
Because that’s what self care looks like. 🖤

    - Throne of Glass makes me sad but I feel like a lot of people lost interest once ACOTAR became really popular. I love ToG so much but I would say that from Heir of Fire onward is where it gets really good. Super unpopular opinion but I didn't like the ACOTAR series.
    - I also read The Darkest Minds when the YA dystopian phase was kind of dying out and I didn't like it. I was bored and it constantly reminded me of the Shatter Me series (which I also hated). I did finish the trilogy but that was back when I didn't DNF.
    - I can remember when Red Queen was so hyped up and I've heard mostly negative things about it since. The book has survived a few unhauls so I guess that means I'm still interested in reading it.
    - I just recently DNF'd The Remnant Chronicles after The Heart of Betrayal because I couldn't stand the author trying to force a love triangle. One of my biggest pet peeves.

I’ve DNF’d the Villain series by VE Schwab, along with the Monsters of Variety series. I view Vicious and This Savage Song as standalone I feel so satisfied where the characters left off in each novel. I definitely felt the urge to both DNF Throne of Glass AND the compulsion to complete the series
My OCD tendencies have pushed me to the last book though (Just started tonight)
In my opinion, the plot and characters get better but, yeah, I feel underwhelmed most of the time 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ironically, I also DNF three of the series she mentioned. Red Queen reminded to much of the Hunger Games to entice me into reading more because I felt like I already read this story. Throne of Glass wasn’t that good for me and I struggled to get through it. Vicious, the most recent of the three, is an odd case in that it was so satisfying by itself that I don’t need to read Vengeful.

I liked the first book fine, but I quickly lost interest when the second book came out. I DNFed the Shades of Magic series last year after not really enjoying the first one. I felt it had a great premise but it just wasn't executed well. I think the series I'm most disappointed about DNFing would be the Caraval series because I loved the first book and enjoyed the second, but I couldn't get through the third. I've also DNFed: The Inheritance Cycle, the Brooklyn Brujas series, the Carve the Mark duology, the Passenger duology, and The Dark Artifices.

I have quite a few series that I have sitting on my shelves that I'm not sure if I want to continue them or not. Most of them are ones that I read the first book like 3-4 years ago and enjoyed it at the time and then never finished the series. 👀 I also DNF'd Skyward and Darkest Minds. They just didn't do it for me. I did give Skyward 4 stars, but when it came time to continue on I just couldn't seem to muster up any enthusiasm.
I also have decided to let go of the Cursebreakers series, the Call Down the Hawk series, the Iron Fey series, the Kate Daniels series (I only had one book left and just couldn't do it!), Diviners, Illuminae series, the whole Shadowhunters world, and the Lifelike series. There's plenty more, but those are the ones that popped out. None of these had anything particularly wrong with them. I just kind of lost interest.

I feel you about sometimes reading a book past the height of its hype and being over the tropes without the community excitement to drive interest in reading it.
If you ever decided to give the Fairyland series another go maybe you could do it on audio when you feel like a mindless comfort read. I only read the first book physically and the rest I listened to and I think that added to the experience. But I agree Valentes writing style is very particular and just doesn’t work for everyone or for every story.

I’m not continuing The Babysitters Coven series. Even though it was a YA and the characters are high schoolers, for me the story read more middle grade and the characters seemed to be 13-15 years old in their voices and behavior. Which isn’t bad, it just wasn’t what I was expecting. I think it could’ve gone darker and deeper, but still maintain the witty banter. The covers of the series are kick ass though 🖤

I was ambivalent about TOG until books 3 (once she gets to the other land) thru 5. Then there was chaol’s book IDGAF about & the finale that was such a disappointment. She set up this awesome cliffhanger at the end of 5 & then it kinda felt like she didn’t know how to resolve it & just checked out. However, I’ve read 3-5 so many times. ESP now that you’re reading some romance, you may enjoy it. (non-ACOTAR-esque, FYI)

Renegades by Marissa Meyer - not sure if I will continue. They are long books and I'm not sure if it would be worth it to read.
The Bone Witch by Ron Chupeco - I didn't really like the characters and didn't really care.
For the Skyward series, I liked the second one more than the first. I'm kinda wondering if you would like the second one more. I know people who really liked the first one didn't like the second one as much. Spensa is really different in Starsight and the world and characters in Skyward aren't really in Starsight either. So it's possible you might like the side characters in Starsight, but it's totally understandable that you don't want to spend time on it when you have other stuff to read. I feel that way as well on some of the books on my tbr.

I think I did not finish quite a lot of YA series because I either did not finish book one in the first place or was simply super annoyed with all of the characters after book one (e. g. did not finish Cruel Prince and Caraval in the first place and I stopped reading The Hazelwood and Stalking Jack the Ripper after the first installment)

Once again I agree with 90% of your opinions. I however can verbalize exactly why I will no longer read Bracken-LOL. Her writing style is one dimensional and there are barely any critical themes. Her books seem to be at the level of middle grade but her subject matter is young adult and it just doesn't do it for me, man. I read book two in the Villains series and I agree, it should have been a stand alone-I didn't know there was going to be a third-I don't think I'll read it. I DNFed The Red Queen after book one and she has a new series coming out-Rule Breakers or something like that. I'll give her another shot but if it sux, that'll be a DNF. The only series that you liked that I DNFed that I can think of is The Queen of the Tearling. I stopped at book one when it first came out. Pleaaase continue the TOG series ! The fourth is actually my favourite ! I can't count the numbers of books I almost didn't read because of bad reviews and that I ended up loving in the end ( like Shadow and bone which I know you love !). What I mean is : I just make up my own opinion now and try not to be too much influenced by reviews ( I actually try to avoid reading them before reading the books now except when I really have no idea what it is about with only the blurb). I personally liked the series even better after the third, so please try again, but if you really don't like it yeah let it go.
Speaking of SJM and Shadow and bone too : will you read Rule of wolves and A Court of Silver Flames ? I believe you said you would in your video about 2021 releases or something like that, but since then you haven't spoke of it so I wondered ( especially about Rule of wolves with the TV show coming, even if King of scars will not be in it). I personally think she improved most of the KoS flaws in RoW and I really loved it. Even if I think a part of it will bother you, I believe you'll enjoy it much more than KoS.

I never picked up Vengeful for the same reasons you stated. Vicious is a standalone as far as I'm concerned. I soured on Rainbow Rowell after the whole Eleanor and Park controversy but even if I hadn't, I find the Carry On sequels just as unnecessary. I'm not picking up the Aristotle and Dante sequel either. Just let stories end, please.
On that same note, I've grown kind of sick of authors writing new series in the same universe over and over again. I removed both the Nikolai duology (and by extension anything else LB might release that's set in the Grishaverse) and the Dreamer trilogy by Maggie Stiefvater from my TBR a few months ago and I feel much better, because it was obvious that the reason I still hadn't picked them up because I was just disinterested in them.

I think the most high profile series that I never finished and am not necessarily looking to finish are the Percy Jackson books (I wanted book 5 in paperback and I literally waited so long that I lost interest) and the Eragon series (kind of the same boat, I just waited too long and lost my hype for the last book)

I loathed the first book in the Throne of Glass series. I liked no one except for the doggo and Nehemia. But I wanted to figure out why people loved it or hated it so much, so I kept on reading. A friend of mine coerced me too. 😅 It's not perfect, but it's so interesting and there's so many cool characters starting with book three and onwards and Celaena has had such character development, I've grown to love her. A series I DNFed without reading because of a lot of people disliking it and possible problematic author especially how these books are read and are portrayed is the Twilight series. I love vampires, but I will never read or watch the movies. Very unappealing.
However, I did like Lore, just felt she made part of Athena unbelievable because in truth as far as I can remember Athena wouldn't do what she did, if anything she would turn you into a spider or a gorgon or anything she thought was justified, but what was written is too unbelievable in my eyes. Plus, the Agon needed to be explained a little bit more for me like why was the Agon even created and how long has it been going on and why can't this end? It was interesting and if it becomes a series I might be interested in a second book, but it does fine as a standalone.
Also, sorry people are so petty, everyone has the right to their opinion, but no one should be rude or nasty about it. I have more respect for a person who has a different view than mine.

I just DNFed the Temeraire series after book 7 (of 9), which makes me so sad! I loved the first one so much, but too many after were travelogs, which made the series feel too inflated to me. The first line in the description of book 8 had a plot device that I genuinely can't stand unless it's at the beginning of a series, and I was just like no, can't do it.

one of my most recent DNF'd series is Poppy War and Kiss of Deception. the 1st was frustrating and overall not fun experience, partly because I think the story the author tried to tell _is_ a decent one. and the Kiss of Deception I have nothing against except I think I picked it up some 5 years too late and cannot engage with it like I would have had I been in mid 20s instead of 30

One series that I DNF'd was the Flame in the Mist series by Renee Ahdieh. It sucks because I love, love, LOVE the Wrath and the Dawn duology and I was so looking forward to FITM, but that first book... yikes. It felt like a totally different author to me, like a fanfiction almost, and I just did not care about anyone enough to continue.

Interesting you dnf'd the Skyward series, I can totally see why from the first book, Spensa was hard to connect with for me as well. Ultimately I continued past that for the world, the mysteries in that world pulled me far for book two. I enjoyed it much more than book one, the way he describes the big spooky bad darkness was like, Pet Semetary by Stephen King creepy. It's definitely for a younger reader so I'm hoping my kids end up enjoying the series more than me!

I DNF'ed the Necroscope series after the fourth book. I started the fifth but I absolutely hated the direction the main character was going in. Plus it's always been a very violent and sexually graphic series, but some of the shit in the last few books just goes too far for me. The first two are solid reads if you love extremely dark vampires and Wallachian lore, and don't have a sensitive stomach. (Do NOT recommend for anyone triggered by gore or sexual assault.)
