  • This is a video reviewing the features of my custom digital dashboard with Magic Mirror software installed, and showing you how to install a setup of your own just like this one. This device is an entire dashboard with many features, but you can start by installing it as a DIY digital calendar or wall display!

All sitting atop some gorgeous wallpapers from /r/cityporn!

    I know this is an old vid but want to give props for a great build and awesome tutorial.
    One take away, NEVER USE A DRILL/DRIVER TO INSTALL MOUNTS TO A TV/MONITOR. You should always hand screw them as the drivers have too much uncontrollable torque and you'll end up cracking the case, screen, or even the control board of your display.

    • @CKTDanny
      @CKTDanny  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment! 😁
      It's true; drills/drivers can be deceiving in how much torque they are actually applying. I'll be more mindful about this and how I present it in the future! :)

    Fantastic video, just what I have been looking to do. One question: to save power on leaving the screen on all day long, any suggestions for a pir controller to turn the screen on when it detects motion (and off after a period of time)? I would leave the Raspberry Pi on all the time, so the pir can run off that and doesnt need to be an extra piece of hardware (unless you think that is easier for someone with only "advanced beginner" raspberry pi experience). thanks, just subscribed.

    • @CKTDanny
      @CKTDanny  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, thanks! You can actually use a module that executes this function for you. There seem to be a few options so you can pick one depending on your need but the simplest ones seem to cut the output signal which puts your tv/monitor to sleep. Or CEC control over HDMI seems pretty elegant too :)

    • @blumsafe230
      @blumsafe230 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CKTDanny one last question maybe you have an answer- cutting off the hdmi signal with the PIR seems like the best solution, but when a tv has its hdmi signal cut off it usually pops up a message that says something like “no signal”. I would prefer the screen to go black. Any ideas on how to defeat this? Thanks again - your post gave me an idea for a new product for my website www.blumsafe.com - a monitor like this to camouflage one of my safes!

    • @CKTDanny
      @CKTDanny  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, if you can configure CEC to work then I believe you can achieve the result you're looking for. Or, you can go for an external solution, maybe with Logitech's Harmony system or something similar.
      Good luck with your product! :)

      That's awesome!
      No real changes on the hardware side, just make sure the Pi has adequate cooling; mine got a little hot so a small fan in the case helped.
      The software might look a little different; the default weather modules are obsolete and replaced with newer ones and I've also dropped a few modules since then too. Otherwise, it held up quite nicely; pretty low maintenance after you get it running well.

      Hey, it's great that you're trying to learn! Is your Magic Mirror installation working right after you install it? Your default modules should be loading right out of the box, even without configuring the JS file. So, if they're not working, then it probably isn't your config file that's causing problems. :)

      For the modules that I custom installed, you can just Google them (e.g. MMM-Wallpaper) and find their repositories that way; they all have simple instructions on how to install them, as well as their recommended configurations.
      The weather modules I have in that config file are no longer in service, I believe - so pay no attention to those. And the ones I stopped using are MMM-AVStock, MMM-Bring, and MMM-Screencast.
      Screencast is the one responsible for YT mirroring but I didn't have great performance on my Pi (maybe it's gotten better since?) MMM-Wallpaper is for the wallpapers and MMM-WiFi is for the QR.
