I decided upon a frontal approach. I’m an ER doctor so I took oscillating cast saw a cut 2.5 x 3 cm rectangular hole around on/off button, pried it off using a Leatherman Wave utility tool, then pressed underlying button, and it turned on. Doesn’t look too bad. You had to go back to get one misplaced screw, I would’ve done that a few times before throwing computer into ocean. At least I knew what to be looking for after seeing your video, so thanks all the same.
I went screw by screw with this video and it was perfect. This was the best diy presentation I have used online so far. My sincere thanks to Michael for taking the time to put it all together. Thanks, Jerry
I replaced the power button board on my Dell model 5558. Even though I had the manual, I couldn't have done it without this video. Many thanks! The only problem I had was getting the antenna leads back on the WiFi module. Initially, after repair, the computer would not run without the charger being plugged in, but removing the battery and holding the power button down for 20 seconds before reinstalling the battery, solved that issue. But it's all back together; everything works. So for $15 and some time, it saved $$ and the anxiety of outside computer repair.
I just turned on my laptop after following your video (also with the instruction manual by my side) and felt so relieved because I didn't have any backup and my computer failed from one day to another. Thanks for the video!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! The computer power cord kept getting yanked out until I couldn't get the power cord to go into the jack. The video for power button was the same delicate surgery for the power jack as well. I bought one on Amazon for under $6 and I'll be up and running in a few minutes after that. Thank you for not blocking all of the screws and a huge thank you for showing the dell specs as well.
I had the same issue! I couldn't turn my computer for a week; brought it to different technicians but could not fix it. But I followed your video and fixed it! The screw on the power button was lose. Thank you so much!!
Thanks man! Opening the laptop apart and put it back is always the scary one. The old me would've thrown this laptop away since I'm no technician savy. Ordered one power button cable/motherboard and now works like a charm.
Thank you, Michael. This was very informative, and I too was able to fix my Dell Inspiron 5555 P51F laptop. The button was bad on our laptop, wouldn't 'click' anymore. Got the part from Dell, with tax, free shipping, for under $11. So, you helped me save ALOT of money!
Great video. Walked me through the whole thing. Only suggestion is that before going through this whole process, buy a replacement on/off switch and just swap the old one out. The replacement was only a $10 item.
Your video recently helped me whilst I replaced the power button board on my 5558 laptop. I had the video playing as I worked through the various stages of the job. Everything is done - thank you very much.
This was very helpful but I am still having a power problem. You helped me by just showing how to open up my laptop. I know they show you in a book but seeing it done was more helpful.
Thank you so much, just fixed a laptop without losing any screws! I added a drop of UV glue under the button so it would make better contact and it worked great!
Thanks for the video, I’d suggest ordering a new power board before opening the case or being prepared to have a type of tape to build a better connection with the plastic push button. I got mine off Amazon for $8.
Had same problem, followed step by step first time, worked for a day. Second time followed the same thing and placed a small paper ball between external and internal buttons. Works fine for now. However one can replace external /internal button.
Thank you so much for this video. I had same problem in same laptop. Quick search on TH-cam brought this up. I had to buy another module however still needed to get to it and rebuild. Spot on!!

Same problem here with Dell Inspiron 5000 laptop, model 5758. Purchased 6/2015. Talked to Dell customer service...they will fix it for $159, out of warranty. Jerks! Service rep stated this is a known problem....but is unwilling to say it's a design flaw so they won't fix it for free. Strange because my employer has several of these same laptops and 2 of 5 of them have the exact same problem. It's a racket! Thanks for the video!
I had the same problem. After a lot of unscrewing, screwing pulling apart and putting back the got the button alligned and now it works. There was no button "click" earlier.
I'm having the same exact problem and followed the manual by the letter to get to the power-button until I got to the base cover. After getting all the screws out and popping out the hinges, there was something in the middle holding the base cover down. It wasn't a screw since I got all the 15 screws the manual talked about and no other was in sight. It was as tight as glue. I couldn't risk trying to pry it open by force so I just gave up. Going to check with a professional shop to see how much it's gonna cost me. Technology is really made to be replaced instead of fixed these days...
This problem persists until today. I have an Inspiron 5759 where the power button got dislocated by regular use after a few months. A while later it wasn't possible to use it at all. They should really create a better power button button design.
Good information, now I know how to fix my laptops power button. One suggestion, please use a fixed mount camera for recoding. The motion from the head mount camera made me feel weird. But regardless the video is very good.
If it doesn't fix magicaly like him, put a little piece of plastic glued on the SMC button or simply put a little bit of crazy glue on the top of the button to add more click feeling area.
This is the issue with these power button boards. Dell adheres a tiny piece of black plastic over the button to sit between the plastic button on the palmrest and the button on the power board. Over time these work loose. Have one sitting in my shop right now, just going to buy a new board for it, only $15.
I have the EXACT same laptop, but the power button is jammed, it would not click, and no matter how hard I press, it makes no click at all, making the laptop impossible to turn on. Please help me with this.

Thanks for the awesome video! Just fixed this issue with my dad. However, if anyone is watching this video with this problem they also need to watch this video: th-cam.com/video/OR32MaQQNgY/w-d-xo.html
Michael got lucky and there wasn't an issue with the button but there is a flaw the other video above talks about. I used JB Weld to fill the gap between the button and power button and it has been working so far! Thanks again!
