Want to gain permission to photograph Pennhurst without the hassle of trespassing fines, arrest, and impound fees? Well now you can. You can get 4 hours of access to the grounds of Pennhurst. You can photograph two buildings and also see the large campus in person. This place is located about 1 hour west of Philadelphia Pennsylvania so if you are interested, email Melissa at mjd.pennhurstpara@gmail.com. Also visit PennhurstParanormal.com to attend a ghost tour (9pm to 3am). Make sure to say I sent you!
Pennhurst State School is known for it once beautiful campus but at the same time, it dark history. The school opened in the early 1900s for children and adults with mental disorders. Parents who wish to not take care of there mentally challenged children could leave them at Pennhurst. Pennhurst was designed to get the children and adults back out into society. However as years went on, the place started turning bad. Everything from patient abuse, medication overdose, dirty conditions, and neglect plagued this place until it was shut down in 1986. It remained abandoned for many years until a private owner bought it and is trying with money generated from tours and the haunted attraction to preserve the property.
When I visit these films I am again grateful for my parents who kept our brother at home the nine years he lived. Left, blind and retarded after a surgical mishap, they thought about a home for him, but just couldn't do it. This, before PL 94-142, that allowed ALL children an education in the least restrictive environment. My mother took care of his every need night and day. As I work on genealogy and see the lists that seem to go on forever in the census of these "inmates", as they were called, my heart aches for what they may have endured. Sad thing is, it still goes on today in institutions and environments around the world. Thank you Steve. You are appreciated. Enjoy your Facebook page. Paula
I first learned of Pennhurst through one of your earlier explores and it's reassuring to know those poor souls won't be forgotten. Thank you Steve.
Thanks for watching Dee
As a small boy I could see the buildings at Pennhurst from my back door. Every now and then a siren would sound telling all in the vicinity someone escaped from the property and be on the look out. I hope they made good their escape!!!!
+daddymac2845 very cool. Thanks for sharing that information
Pennhurst is honestly so beautiful despite the dark things that happened there. I've gone to Pennhurst many times and each time is never the same experience.
I live near Penhurst, my mother and brother both worked there and Mom did see and hear some nasty things that happened there and some things that see was told to do that she felt was wrong, but on the video, I really enjoyed seeing all the original paintings on the walls of children playing and having a "normal" enjoyment and fun...I especially liked the pictures of the 4 children of 2 different races at the waters edge, seeming to enjoying the time with friends no matter what color you are... the original painted pictures on the wall were amazing and shows a different perspective on things that were tried without half the special service offered today, not trained staff... my mother had no training and had never(besides raising 5 children on her own) any knowknowledge of how to care for all these special needs people, but was hired without much training and intimated into doing things that she felt was wrong. Mom worked with the "working boys" (not so severely mentally challenge, was able to come home with us for the day and help around the house...I was probably about 13 or 14... and he was probably about 31ish but kinda was really mentally as a young teen mentality...Mom was a single mom at the time with 5 children... so he helped us alot and I loved him... I've gone to many events with some of the residents... learned to roller skate with one guy on each arm at Ringing Rocks Rink. It's great to see some of the good side of Pennhurst, instead of all bad, which there was a lot of!
I have a special interest in Pennhurst and I really like the end photos you took. There's a foreboding melancholy to the place that draws you in...so sad.
Thank You
Just incredible! Fascinating from start to finish. I couldn't help but feel sad towards the end when thinking of what these people may have endured there. It intrigued me so that I must read and learn what happened to the existing residents.
yes this place has a sad past. If you do not know about Pennhurst, you should definitely read about it
I'm gong back through and watching some videos I haven't seen yet. This one was incredible. The stillness of those rooms must have been something. I think it's great that they are allowing photographers to come into this location in its original state and document it. That is rare around here. Very well captured Steve!
Ben, if you ever visit the area, let me know and I will try to set up a day to check this place out
Good place to make a spooky movie
Awesome video as per usual Steve, always top quality and top notch walk through's.
Thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed it
live 15 minutes away from here. definitely want to think about going into this place one day. thanks for the cool video!
Woooow! Again! Just Woooow! Thanks for sharing. It's like "time stood still." Just seeing some of the stuff left behind. Glad it's no longer up & running. But still breaks my heart.
+Morena G. Thank you
+Abandoned Steve (Historical - Urbex) & thank you for taking the time to respond back. Now that's what's up! & cool! I'm def subscribing now.
They turned it into a haunted attraction like 2 or 3 years ago
Very nice tour! It's great they're giving the tours now. This building looks in much better shape than some of the others. Very eerie feel to it.
Thanks Jason. This building was the last building to be erected on this campus in the 50s. The roof is in somewhat good shape.
Life is very interesting... I enjoy history
So weird I had a dream after watching this last night... I then I woke up not being able to wake up LOL my room mate had to slap me so I can wake up. I just keep whistling like crazy.
I used to go there with frienda all the time, we always entered through Devon hall, crazy place, had a couple crazy happenings there, one in Devon halls basement!
Derek Cassady yea devon hall is amazing. Cleaned up now but still amazing
I always liked things with a history but when I watched the first video I was disturbed yet intrigued to find out more I think your vidoe's have helped me learn so much more about it thank you very much for the tours and video's you have made of pennhurst
Thank so much Annie. So many people do not know what happened at this place. It is very sad
Abandoned Steve I still havnt discovered it all but I'd like to visit there just to see it I think I might be too scared to venture inside but there are alot of places in pennsylvania to explore but thank you for all the video's you make
Steve your Mighty Brave my friend no way would my chicken hiney be in that basement! Wonderful video wouldn't expect anything less from you, thanks for the tour...
haha it not that bad in the dark quiet basement :)
I thought that the pictures you took that you had at the end were great! Thanks for sharing 😄
yeahriight57 Your welcome! Glad you liked the photos
I investigated it way before it was last purchased. Super creepy. Got some of my best paranormal evidence from there.
Lots of mental hospitals were closed in the eighties. There are small privately owned assisted living facilities but im afraid many mentally unstable people fall through the cracks financially and have become street people. Thank you Steve....another great video.
You are correct. It surprising it took that long before they closed down. Thanks for watching
you should do a ghost tour there
Love the stills at the end. You have an eye for it.
Thank You Douglas
Steve thank you for showing me such wonderful buildings I wonder sometimes why have they been left
Patricia Calunniato your welcome thank you for watching
Awesome video. I've lived in PA my whole life. But I live very close to the NY border, so this would be far for me to go to.. but I would love to visit it someday.
worth a drive if you have the time
i want to be here soon >:o
Josh XD
Such a sad place. Thanks for sharing this with us. Your photography is so powerful. have you published any of it?
Thank You so much. Glad you enjoy the pictures and video. I have not published any of my pictures
Abandoned Steve
You should consider publishing them. You're incredibly talented. Your images are full of raw emotion,
Great video, pity that these massive buildings eventually deteriorate and fall into ruins.
RODALCO2007 Yea good thing is they got this building under control.
Interesting, Thanks
That place was a torture chamber for most patients...
If walls could talk.. They would speak of the horror behind them.
That is a cool place, before I read the description I was thinking that would make a cool condo conversion, but now I think what they're doing is much better.
I read in the description they are doing tours of the building, did you need to sign a waiver before entering due to all the asbestos and lead paint in the building??
Lead paint and asbestos the two hardest and most expensive things to get rid of in an old building.
This building is free of asbestos. Not sure about the paint but they spent a ton of money to get it removed. So far they have it removed in 3 buildings. They still make you sign a waiver as it is not maintained space
Thanks!
Your welcome. Thanks for watching
awesome video... there was so much crazy stuff going on there the place must have a very heavy vibe to it (If any place is haunted it would be there) very Erie
Yea this place has a dark history. Thanks for watching
another awesome video. i would love to be able to explore this place. thanks for sharing and stay safe.
if you in south eastern pa, it worth a visit
This is so cool:). I love watching your videos!. I don't think I could walk around on my own though, I would be so scared, lol.
Have you ever caught a ghost on camera, or heard any real creepy unexplainable sounds whilst exploring?.
It is not that bad at certain places. Some places I do not go alone though. I have not seen a ghost but people have said they seen one in a film I did
Awesome:). Which video?.
It must have been great to know you could walk around and film or take pictures, without the stress of someone catching you. Although I must admit that you probably have such an adrenaline rush in other places. Great video, from beginning to end! New fan, off to see your other work! Thanks so much for sharing your adventures.
Joanne Sabourin welcome to the channel! Yes it is much easier when you have permission
Geez that place is so Creepy, and its Haunted ya know...lol.. you have Alot of guts doing what you do Steve, but Stay Safe..
Thanks Man. Nothing better than being in a dark basement of a very active location :)
how can you go through these places so calmly holy shit lol
it easy! :)
Abandoned Steve damn especially after hearing all this stuff about how its so haunted
Excellent, amazing job Steve, Hearing conversation about 9:17 , where you alone in the building ?
Thank You. There were a few other people in the building. It could of been them
Is this location open for tours and/or paranormal investigation, it has been my dream to visit Pennhurst State School / Hospital!!
great video...sad its rotting away
They have actually done a lot of work to try and preserve this building. It the only one on the campus that is actually in the best shape
I assume that Devon Hall was for small children? How many different wards were there? I also want to say that you are my absolute favorite TH-cam explorer. 👍🏻
Thank You. Devon Hall had all ages in it. Not sure how many wards
Wow I didn't realize that their were still patient records and belonging their. Can you only imagine that someone used to read those books. Someone used to use those cloths. Someone used to play with those toys. I need to come visit their. Will the current owners let you explore?
Shy Kamai Yea when this place closed in the late 80s, everything was left behind
The size and scope of these huge buildings and the design and workmanship that went into them is mind boggling! I can't believe stuff like this is left to simply decay and fall apart with no apparent effort to repurpose or preserve the building. I'm glad someone seems to be keeping a bit on an eye on the place but it's a shame to see the state it's in considering it was once thriving with activity. People actually celebrate the closing of these places! What a terrible waste of resources!
yes it really shows you well and careful houses were built back then.
Abandoned Steve I still think thee buildings should be repurposed and preserved. Senior citizen housing might be a good use for them.
we can all agree but that will probably not happen
that place is haunted by ghost because ghost adventures went their and got some good finding
-abandoned steve
Diana Izurieta yep seen that episode
Awesome video!!!!
Thank You
I remember watching an episode of Ghost Hunters where they explored this very building. Interesting to know that you can arrange to legally explore it. There is a local paranormal society willing to give tours in haunted buildings. I'm working on getting some equipment together before I go. What kind of camera were you using if you don't mind my asking? It seems to pick up sound very well.
I use a nikon and the mic is an external stereo mic by Rode
Really great video!!! (: Curious, are they allowing people to go in and photograph again/anymore?
heyimshay yes they are. Check out pennhurstparanoral on facebook for more info
A S: Thanks for the beautiful, steady camera work. Are you tall, or are some doorways short lol? I wouldn't mind if you voiced/shared your thoughts, facts and observations from the beginning. Some things may be obvious to you, but not to me!
Great tour.
+dallia1355 Thank you and I am tall
@Abandoned Steve did you ever tour the Quaker Building?
+johnny10301968 I have not yet but will be soon :)
The whole place is kind of spooky. I'm sure if a paranormal investigation were to be done there would be a lot of EVPs and such. Interesting....
They do offer paranormal tours here Judithann. Mainly in the Mayflower hall and they capture a lot of things on EVPs
at 12;00 weird sound was that?
At 4:29 want room was that ? Ps you do so good in this vid
That is the bathroom unless you are trying to joke with me.
no im not
Have you ever seen/been to Northville insane asylum Michigan or ST.eloise insane asylum Michigan really cool places both built in early 1900s and late 1800s
I have not. I really have not been out of the state of PA except for when I toured the TALA in West Virginia
This place is hardcore
just like being there
I heard that room with all the candy, and carnival scenes painted on it was pretty well known. It's called the Candy Room I think. Go figure...
Yes it was called the candyland room
Abandoned Steve When do u think that you might do another hangouts chat?
Not sure yet. Have no plans at the moment
Abandoned Steve, Have you ever felt strange sensations or seen "something" while being inside these kind of places? I don't want to say ghosts because I don't believe they exist but I'm just curious. Well anyway, my respects to you Man! This a really interesting video.
Estehwey no really. I dont believe in ghost either. Until i see one, i will believe. I been in a lot of places including to that were featured in various ghost adventures tv shows and have seen or felt nothing
Hi Steve I would like to know if there is a way I could see this place or set something up to go and take picture;s. I have always wanted to see the place and to take picture's I like to go through old place's as well but penn hurst is one place i like to go thanks
Mary bouman Hi Mary, the photography tours are done for the year as they place is going through it haunt season for halloween. They will resume next year.

You did you get in with no permission
surukalo I had permission to do this.
Weird, this school had no GYM.
G RJ there are many buildings surrounding this which could of housed the gym.
True, thanks for pointing that out.
At 9:49 want my room is that
A satanic prison
in those bags are donated books. not clothes. not patient files. they were all donated a few years ago.
gotcha. I was told different when i was there but thanks for the clarification
