- Join Todd Tuckey as he explains how the popular VS System that Nintendo made to retrofit Donkey Kong, Popeye, and Donkey Kong Junior worked! This brought new life to arcade cabinets that stopped earning money in the mid to late 80's! Neat stuff!
Very educational. Heard some switch versions of vs system and wanted to look it up. Thankful for this and arcade archives to preserve this info.
Just wanted to say I grew up watching your infomercials and discovering that you guys have a TH-cam presence is great. I've always wanted to see more of your stuff and this is a great way to do just that. This video in particular was a treat to watch. Pulling out that Slalom kit was a real "whoa" moment. I imagine almost no one has a kit like that, especially in such fantastic condition. Looking forward to watching more of your stuff, and hopefully sometime in the future I'll book a party at your actual place. It's been a secret dream of mine for a long, long time. Thanks!
shamoozal Thanks so much for your response! Yes, we would LOVE for you to have a party ehre at TNT!!! Over 25 years of parties now!
Nintendo's cabs always had a certain charm. Even in the 80's they looked retro.
You're doing great work. I love playing the Nintendo arcade games on Switch. Hamster do a very decent emulation job.
another thing that made the Vs. versions of some games unique from their NES counterparts is some slight tweaks such as Vs. SMB having some elements from the original Japanese Super Mario Bros 2 (a.k.a. SMB: The Lost Levels), and Vs. Duck Hunt having the bonus game with the ability to shoot the dog who would normally laugh at you for failing to shoot the ducks (of course, once he's shot, he'll come into the open in crutches and a blackened face similar to most cartoon characters who get blown up like most of the Looney Tunes, and then scold you for shooting him instead of the ducks).
figment1988 Thanks for the neat facts!
The kindercare I went to in Memphis, TN when I was 4 had a VS SMB cabinet with an Excitebike cabinet right next to it. It was the first time in my life I had set eyes on video games. Oh to have those machines in my possession.
Great video Todd! I enjoyed your high tech special effects intro lol. What a coincidence that you posted this video 3 days after I got my own VS SMB. It's working great after a few adjustments! BTW, thank you for pointing me to the location of the horizontal hold on the monitor chassis. It was right where you said it would be.
Todd Lalonde Glad you liked them! And YES...that little HH pot is hard to see...but it always does the trick!!! And people think I don;t know what I am talking about! :-)
I thought the vs had to be connected to each other originally in order to function or is there only 1 game that had that
john madsen That PCB board will actually run two separate games...that huge cabinet only had this one logic board inside it! So one side of board feeds one montior and controls and the other side the other monitor and controls. This way, you could use that big cabinet and eventually have two unrelated games in it!
I have played one of those double VS systems before, super cool
lol, great video! always love seeing the inner working of these games, I never knew that they just had you flip the glass around to go from DK to SMB/VS.
DarkTetsuya Thanks!!
Loved the VS. games in the arcades. I remember watching a guy loop Gradius over and over on a Gradius VS. Excitebike machine at Aladdin's Castle arcade in NC. VS. Goonies was another favorite of mine.
Perry Scoon Yes...and then Hogans Alley and Duck Hunt too!
VS.SMB has the same gameplay based in the NES version but with differences: no extra lives trick, powerups in different place and low time in every stages, include if you collect 100 or 200 coins for a extra lives
FortunaChan Thanks for the imput!
I love the finger gag... haha It NEVER gets old :P
:-)
I'm loving the added production value with the increase in green screen visual effects! The game looks great as always, guys! I have an RBI vs unisystem that I am passively on the lookout for super Mario bros or excite bike Roms to switch it out with.
Thanks! We are trying to keep people entertained and informed at the same time!!
What a classic game. Mario and Nintendo pretty much saved video games back in the day after the crash of 1983.
Riz2336 YES!! True classics!
I would have thought, as cheap as the kits were, they would have been more popular. I only remember seeing VS systems in pizza parlors and the occasional storefront; I don't recall ever seeing one in our local dark arcades.
Excellent video as always! Cute little girl too -- not afraid of the camera at all.
Nightenstaff There were quite a few different games! Many people remember Hogans Alley with the gun! You may not have realized it was a VS game! How about Excitebike?
Oh, I know the games. The VS / NES era was my childhood =)
An interesting fact about the VS Super Mario Brothers game. The PCB holds 2 AA bateries for saving high scores BUT, this feature doesn't work with VS SMB! There is a ROM chip you can swap out on the board with a specially made chip to allow the game to save your high scores and it allows demo mode to play when the machine is set to free play. I'll be trying one of these chips out soon.
Todd Lalonde Yes...annoying!!!
Such a rarity to see Mario Bros arcade! Lucky individual for sure.
uniroyalbarrie Yes...he really liked this game!
What was Castlevania? A Play Choice 10 set on solo or a Vs? I seen one once but can't remember but other than it was in a cocktail.
Todd you've been doing this for how long? I'm sure you know what you're talking about! Keep these great videos coming 😃
Todd Lalonde 35 hyears now! Will keep making videos!
get some silly putty, squish get some ink and maybe you'll find out the number :)
Awesome video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I would have loved to have played one of those out in the wild. Amazing that it's pretty much the home nintendo system in a cabinet.
Oh crikey. Imagine if there was an arcade cabinet of Kaizo Mario World...
Ascyltos They made Mario World in the Super System...only one version!
Kaizo Mario World was a ROM hack of it. Look it up on here. It is known for being brutally, brutally, unfairly difficult.
Nintendo really are the Disney of video games :)
Nintendo delivered in quality of the game ,hardware and profit
Ashley Holroyd Yes, they did!!!
Tel eVision
(ahem)
A Button: Jump
Joystick: Movement
Joystick Down: Crouch
B Button + Joystick: Run
Sorry Todd, but I have to give you a hard time, for not knowing how to play Super Mario Bros.
badreality2 WAY too complicated! :-)
well now we know why people question those serial numbers. (ahem yes getting a smart tv has distracted me a bit. Netflix has 11 seasons of family guy I'm on ep 1 of season 7 all in 2 weeks or less X_X Bing watching. forgot about that. have done it with CSI and True Blood but not this bad. and yesterday was my birthday. so your like less than 20 yrs older than me. and Tammy is 20 yrs younger than me how odd. I'm 39 and I'm in between? well she could still be 18. some of us had to cheat ( I didn't. bit hard to lie) to get into the THEN Sears Tower. crazy price difference between 18 and 17 X_X grrrrr) and being Lutherans in a hotel that naturally had access to PPV enjoyed the porn previews. Didn't imagine someone in our senior class trip would bother BUYING on. He did get into trouble for that because he thought he was paying for it. Uh no, the person who rented out the rooms did. (OOPS)
Sea Wolf Guy is that you?
