I don't know. I'm not crazy about when two GIGANTIC superstars get together for pieces like this. You always have the clashing personalities. You always wonder how much did they actually practice together. I felt Marta was pushing Sophie. Not that Sophie can't play faster. But I suspect Sophie was trying to savor more moments. And then you have Martha, an explosive personality, who also tends to RUSH pieces (maybe out of boredom from playing them so much, who knows), but she's playing the piano part which is equivalent to most concertos, so she's going to feel some sort of way about being guided by the violinist. So, the little I head here didn't feel like they could have been more synergy between the two.
I agree totally. And I'm really glad I'm not the only one thinking the same. I too, am always apprehensive when superstars get together, let alone these two GIGANTIC ones you mentioned. People often get carried away seeing a gathering of superstars and give them the loudest applause and cheers even though their playing comes out odd, or under-rehearsed. Instead of expecting more of them, the audience sometimes becomes 'less critical'. I do think the above performance was put up without much rehearsal. Perhaps the organizers didn't plan it well enough.
Also agree. The Franck sonata is romantic and this cut of the final movement lacks the drama and tension between the two parts. I much prefer Mutter's recording with Lambert Orkis, in Berlin. I'm embarrassed I've never heard of Marta Argerich but will have to listen to other recordings. In this clip she seemed ham-handed and didn't seem up to the performance, which seemed to throw Mutter off. The best of people have bad days. Not sure what happened here. I'm happy to see Mutter resumed touring -- she took a break recently. Now I'll have to monitor her website to see if she's coming back here any time soon. Saw her in Orange County when she played three of five Mozart concertos one evening. At concerts with orchestras, you're grateful to hear one. Three? Never heard of it.
This is just a sample. The whole performance should be heard before being so drastic. I heard quite extraordinary and individual musical ideas just in that clip. That is quite interesting.
AS Mutter spielt absolut perfekt.
Totally not convinced by this performance. Messy, quite some missed notes by Argerich, inexplicable tempo changes, almost slowing down to a halt causing Mutter to be forced to slam the breaks … Meh.
I find this is a “match” that doesn’t work. Totally different and too distant personalities. Their ways to see and interpret music have nothing in common
Weak performance! Why do such players interpret the music of César Franck, although they hardly know the composer? They just play down the notes. Like machines, without feeling, and without deeper understanding of Franck's music. Even the best technique cannot replace the understanding of a sonata. Argerich and Mutter show a staggering performance, and they play Franck's pieces like they interpret Chopin or Liszt. Exactly there lies the mistake!
Yeah...Martha Argerich, who has played this Sonata for more than a half century with everyone from Perlman to Rostropovich to Gallway to Maisky to Capucon to Kremer to Gitlis to Accardo to Schwarzberg to Ricci doesn't know how to interpret this piece, but you do. 🙄
@@bsmusicd - No one is beyond critique. I can guarantee you that even Martha doesn't want her audiences always walking away screaming how wonderful she is. You don't get to be as exquisite a pianist as Martha by getting offended over comments, particularly if they are constructive comments that purely address the music. Trust me, that's all her mentors did when they were in practice sessions over the years; they critique her playing! That's how she got so good. So, if the original poster thought Martha sounded like a machine, that's something Martha just might take into consideration. I, in fact, thought there was very little connection between her and Sophie. They both sounded like they rehearsed this piece in their head on the plane, and the first time they actually played it together was on stage for this recording. (Who knows if that's the case, but it sure sounded like it.) Trust me, someone of Martha's stature wouldn't even bat an eyelash at what I just said. Again, she is the best of the best for her reason. Her level of playing can EASILY withstand the greatest of scrutiny.
Two amazing ladies💖💖💖💖💖💖

Wie das nicht zusammen passt , wahnsinn

2:51 That crossed face of Martha's, when she is turning round, says it all: she didn't like it!!
😍😍😍
A meeting of Goddesses.
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩💙💜💜

I think it is almost a sin to reduce Francks Violin Sonata to this 3 minutes.
😀💋

Ich höre was anderes. Ist halt alles subjektiv. Finde das Zusammenspiel ganz wunderbar.
Ich empfinde es ganz genauso. "Starfighter" ist sehr treffend.

Chaos of Chaos...
Two famous people met and ruined the music. truly terrible
Sounds weird and has nothing to do with Francks Music. But you can see in the title what's the priority: Argerich and Mutter, not Franck's Sonata.
So you are weird and sick!!

Je suis de votre avis .césar Franck 'c'est tout en douceur et en intimité 'rien de tel ici ....
