Great video thank you! I have a 2003 XC90 with 180k miles and the diagnostic software tells me I have a problem with the SLT and no.5 solenoid. I was toying with the idea of getting it fixed but I realise now how much work and cost is potentially involved and with the age and mileage you've helped me decide it's not worth it. Really educational video. I love watching people who know what they're doing!!

I have a local guy trying to sell a great looking V70 for cheap but I now know I will not try and attempt to buy and fix it being this trans is way beyond my patience threshold and wallet to try an fix for a weekend project. Fantastic teardown, information and over info provided. The biggest thing taken away is doing your routine maintenance ini regard to fluid change saves thousands of dollars like always on these Nissan transmissions. Use Nissan Matic or Amsoil at manufacturer recommended intervals or sooner to be on the safe side.
ATSG has a technical manual for this unit that covers all vehicle makes. It is staggering... I've read a lot of service manuals and know a lot about working on cars. This manual is something you really need to go to school to understand. That being said, I'm still going to rebuild when the time comes, and fortunately I have a lot of time to learn before I have to do it.

Blown away with the complexity of the AW transmission and especially your expertiese, a privillage to watch. I am about to renew the fluid (Gibbons) on my 2005 V70 112,000mls for the first time, runs fine at the moment. I somehow wish I had not watched this, especially at the "high mileage is about 100,000mls" comment 🙄 Get as much of the fine floating metal particles out as possible.
@6:32 I think Sonnax has these special metal retainers out now that you can put on the electrical connectors for the linear solenoids in case they get broken trying to disconnect them so you can still use them.
Hello sir you do great work i rebuild cars for a living any engine you name it. But when it comes to transportation of transmission you are great i don't dare even try to work on it. The clutch got it doing what you do it becomes all Alien technology lol 😆 I don't have the patience for that. If not, I will either have it professionally serviced or scrap the car. I'd like to change the filter. Why in the world did they bury it inside the transmission?
just got a call from my local tranny repair man. He said it will cost me (approx in USD) 2500 $ to fix my AW55. Apperantely there are some worn out clutches and some solenoid failure. With this awesome video i will do it myselg. Keep on with what you are doing ! A+
My car turns on, I put it into drive and hit the gas pedal and it just revs, I put it into reverse same thing, went into manual mode and same thing it’s like my gears aren’t engaging... then when I went to put it in park it makes a noise in the middle between neutral and park. Help. It’s a 2005 Nissan Altima SE-R same transmission as this one. If it’s the valve Body I’ll change it if not I’m not fixing it. Any info will help
Do you have a DVD on dis-assembly, inspection and rebuild of the AW55-51SN / RE5F22A Transmission? I purchased a DVD on the 4T65E transmission and rebuilt a couple with success. The DVD was more detailed than a manual because it showed what to look for to replace and you could stop the DVD and never lose your place in putting the unit back together.

There may be a reason. MANY people are now watching Utube clips on the new model "smart" TVs. Can't believe this little thing puts down that power.. I have an 05 Volvo s60R, 230k, well maintained. Original trans shifts decent, not real problems. I've got this converter slip of about 500 rpm or so in 3rd sometimes. I know they do have the slip built in but this seems double. It will hold rpm then increase speed by near 20 mph before converter locks back up like a cvt feel for a few seconds. As i add more power it seems to be more pronounced. So before adding more power I'm doing a transgo shift kit to make everything better, I hope.. I need to get vida going again to run the adaptation. Hopefully this will improve some of the shift characteristics
I fixed the problem with my Volvo transmission with a rare earth magnet. I simply placed the magnet on the valve body pan. After driving for a few days it shifted perfectly

Hi, thanks for your video. I replaced my linear solenoids (I know you don't recommend that) and need to calibrate them. I'd like to take the valve cover off and drill 3 holes where the solenoids are so I don't have to keep taking the cover off every time I adjust the solenoids, but need to figure out a way of plugging them. Do you know of a plug and grommet kit or anything I could use to plug the holes? Thank you.

Hey Tony, did you find out where this washer goes? I've "test assembled" the unit (no RTV on the casing joins yet) and have the same washer left over. All the exploded views I have don't show clearly if they are Torrington needle rollers, races or washers. Guess this is why it was a test assembly, I'm pleased I haven't glued everything together... Hiram, you're fantastic ... an asset to any business! I previously overhauled (well, assisted my journeyman) Borg Warner Jaguar XJ6 boxes during my apprenticeship years in the mid 80s ... I'm a bit wary of touching these 'electronic' boxes. You seem quite at ease, what exactly is required on the diagnostic side? Here in South Africa Volvo charge +-R45,000 (+-USD2,800) for a recon XC70 (P2) gearbox, I could do it for substantially less... if I had the diagnostic machine.

HY HIRAM.i see this transmission you can change the majority of pistons and clutches at the backside of the transmission. i we have a problem with the first or forward clutch and the 1-2-reverse breake(clutches). can i change all this in side the transmission at the car??? thanks

Hi Hiram Gutierrez, Great Video, Thanks for doing this. I got a AW55-51SN no Fwd or Reverse whatsoever no codes , Fluid level is ok. Fluid smells burnt it is not black but dark brown . I checked all the sol they all measure good and respond electrically apart from S4 , S4 measures good but when I trickle it with 12 volts doesn't make any sound. Any advice would be great help. No, the TF80SC is more likely the 09G. The difference is the 09G has intermediate clutches and the TF-81SC has a band of intermediate. Also the valve body is towards the front of the car while the 09G is at the bottom.

***** love this video. Not many people go as in depth as you.. I have an issue with a 01 Volvo v70 xc transmission. Park is loading the engine like its in drive and I think it would move if not for the park pawl because the car moves forward when you start it and you can't Rev past whatever the TC stall speed is. Reverse doesn't work, it's like reverse is fighting drive and reverse at the same time so it just doesn't move at all. Neutral is DRIVE (yup I can go forward in drive) , and drive is drive. It seems to shift through all the forward gears (car is not registered so I can't drive it but in my jobs parking lot).. I'm a professional auto technician but we don't do transmission overhauls.. This seems to me like a solenoid or valve body issue, but I don't know. Where would you suggest I start my diagnosis? I have access to snap on modis scanner, and Mitchell on demand (not a fan of it but it's what my shop uses) Ohh and i have a dtc for 3rd gear incorrect ratio in the TCM.
***** You were spot on with your diagnosis. When i got the trans apart there was a drum in the rear of the trans (dont know its name) with a broken weld seem and burnt up/frozen clutches. i will post pictures and such when i get a chance.

I really love my ride and I’m determined to put it back on the road one way or another; the goal beeing an even Million! I’ve watched all your videos concering this box and probably know them by heart now and I was hoping you could give me some advice. I’m in total rebuild mode; VB, tranny, the works but I need some help with what and where to buy the rebuild parts, plus I would also have a couple of insider tips to ask for which I haven’t found answers to on your channel. Love this guy! this is weird to ask here but im loosing my mind! I have Renault with same transmission. Issue it has is that i loose D after tranny warms a bit. If its cold it Works like charm. Sometimes it does that when i put on N or R it goes to D. I took valvebody out and got new one in (i made sure solenoids had same adjustment as in old one) new oil in it and correct level but sitll no go. I know this is long shot that guru c this msg but i have no clue what to do…
***** Hi. I have a question: I repaired my 2006 Maxima's Transmission (Exactly the same trans as the one you repaired). After completely overhauling it, It says that it's on 5th Gear but it's really stuck on 2nd. It won't change gears no matter the RPM. The TCS, SLIP, and Service Engine Soon lights are on and when you put Reverse and/or D it shifts very harsh. I did a Diagnostic and it said that the Cam position Sensor is bad and that the TCM is inactive even though it's new. Does the Cam Position Sensor affect the Transmission in a way? Thanks.
Alex Keller I resolved the problem a few days ago. It was that the Transmission bolts weren't torqued correctly. And the new valve body was defective too. Thanks for the reply BTW! It's appreciated.

When you b Rebuild one of these aisin aw 55s do you use a master rebuild kiut of parts? What brand of spare parts do you buy? I have a aw55-50sn from a volvo v70 wagon I use to tow with. Thinking of wintertime overhaul to keep it reliable. Seen these kits from China for a couple of hundred dollars with plates and steels but unsure about those. Seen son Organ kits /parts online too. What is you recommendation. Thanks in advance.
Hello Hiram. I have this transmission in my 2004 Volvo XC 90 all-wheel-drive with two. Five turbo. It now has 260,000 miles and is running strong shifts great. Do you think this is exceptional for this transmission? I change fluid twice a year
Hiram-- 2005 Volvo S40 AWD. I'm 95% certain that the bearing on the passenger side of the differential is bad and getting worse fast. Can I separate the case at the bell housing without dismantling all the other parts per the steps you demonstrated? The trans runs fine but there is a bearing grinding and it gets worse in 15 minutes of driving. I ruled out hubs, transfer case, axles, everything else. Will I be ahead to just scrap the trans? PS - You take that trans apart like a machine. Fun to watch although I'm ashamed to admit that.

I have taken out the 4 bolts, clutch packs, spring compress ring, and the larger snap ring in the center. Definite pump failure due to clogging of debris, large metal debris of 1mm in size can be seen near the center input shaft, I just cannot figure out how to remove the pump to show the client...
hy Hiram. i steel have the problem with the transmission AG4 01M . i rerepeare all the clutches and piston. i have the engagement of secound and third ... after a nice engagement comes the interruption..desengagment . it seems like the pressure decreases! i have change the valve body before . i see that i have a bad pushing on the drum 3.
So just saw a video from "abu5ed vq" that clearly shows the linkage bar from the valve body to the range switch plate. Is this prone to come loose causing no engagement?
yet another great video Hiram.. i have an isue with an chevrolet captiva transmission..(aisin 55-51)...after rebuild with bushing kit instaled seal kit instaled ,cleaned the valve body and everything, not the transmission is harsh on shifting from N to D and from N to R....i also have erro code on 5 gear and toque converter stuck open ...my gues is that upon reasamble of the valve body i mistakely set the "steped" pressure regulator sleeve...could be this the case Hiram?

Hello Hiram, If an axle shaft end snapped at the retaining ring groove and the broken end and ring fell into the transmission, could it be removed without disassembling the entire transaxle? This happened to me on a 99' Maxima with 240K miles. Not sure if it's worth the effort to and cost.
greeting! I have a problem with the Volvo gearbox 55/51 sn. no reverse. I cleaned the selenoid and disassembled the gearbox and there was no mechanical flaws that did not break or crack, but the front went smoothly and great in all gears. I'm asking for help.

Hello, I have a Chevrolet Captiva 2007 model, a six-piston engine, 3.2 liters of petrol. I have a problem when I am driving the car and the engine temperature is in the normal mode and at a slow speed, there is a jingle and a ticking sound, especially when changing the first and second gears also in reverse. The gearbox oil was changed and the problem persisted. Is it because of the body of the valve or the problem of sensors?
Crazy question... I know these transmissions were used in tons of different vehicles ranging from Nissan to Toyota and even including my 2002 Volvo S60. Just curious, do the vehicles that use this trans all have the same bellhousing bolt pattern (on their engines) or do these trans all have proprietary bolt patterns specific to each brand?

I have an issue with an AW55-50 on 2001 Volvo V70. it works well except it don't engage the 3rd gear. it don't find it, over rev, and finally engage 4th if I'm enought fast. Oil is new, linear solenoids too, all electronics arounds are ok. Do you think the third gear is dead or is it about the valve body? Thank you very much for your reply!

Thanks for sharing your videos, I am overhauling this specific trans and have run into an issue hopefully you can help with.. the direct clutch and 1-2 reverse clutches use a "cushion' spring in the pack along with the steels and frictions..my manual is not clear on which way the cushion spring goes in, do you know by chance? I'd like to take the valve cover off and drill 3 holes where the solenoids are so I don't have to keep taking the cover off every time I adjust the solenoids, but need to figure out a way of plugging them. Do you know of a plug and grommet kit or anything I could use to plug the holes? Thank you.

Hey Tony, did you find out where this washer goes? I've "test assembled" the unit (no RTV on the casing joins yet) and have the same washer left over. All the exploded views I have don't show clearly if they are Torrington needle rollers, races or washers. Guess this is why it was a test assembly, I'm pleased I haven't glued everything together...

Hiram, you're fantastic ... an asset to any business! I previously overhauled (well, assisted my journeyman) Borg Warner Jaguar XJ6 boxes during my apprenticeship years in the mid 80s ... I'm a bit wary of touching these 'electronic' boxes. You seem quite at ease, what exactly is required on the diagnostic side? Here in South Africa Volvo charge +-R45,000 (+-USD2,800) for a recon XC70 (P2) gearbox, I could do it for substantially less... if I had the diagnostic machine.

HY HIRAM.i see this transmission you can change the majority of pistons and clutches at the backside of the transmission. i we have a problem with the first or forward clutch and the 1-2-reverse breake(clutches). can i change all this in side the transmission at the car??? thanks

Where are you located man? How much to rebuild one of these transmissions for a 2005 Volvo V70R??... No real problems as of yet, I'm just looking long term as I want my car to last well into the 200k miles (only 98k miles at the moment)...
Chris Lindley 1000 would be a minimum but over 2000 is a sure bet

I got a AW55-51SN no Fwd or Reverse whatsoever no codes , Fluid level is ok. Fluid smells burnt it is not black but dark brown .
I checked all the sol they all measure good and respond electrically apart from S4 , S4 measures good but when I trickle it with 12 volts doesn't make any sound.
Any advice would be great help.

Outstanding. Are these and the TF-80SC's fundamentally close in design and operation?
No, the TF80SC is more likely the 09G. The difference is the 09G has intermediate clutches and the TF-81SC has a band of intermediate. Also the valve body is towards the front of the car while the 09G is at the bottom.

I have an issue with a 01 Volvo v70 xc transmission. Park is loading the engine like its in drive and I think it would move if not for the park pawl because the car moves forward when you start it and you can't Rev past whatever the TC stall speed is. Reverse doesn't work, it's like reverse is fighting drive and reverse at the same time so it just doesn't move at all. Neutral is DRIVE (yup I can go forward in drive) , and drive is drive. It seems to shift through all the forward gears (car is not registered so I can't drive it but in my jobs parking lot).. I'm a professional auto technician but we don't do transmission overhauls.. This seems to me like a solenoid or valve body issue, but I don't know. Where would you suggest I start my diagnosis? I have access to snap on modis scanner, and Mitchell on demand (not a fan of it but it's what my shop uses)
Ohh and i have a dtc for 3rd gear incorrect ratio in the TCM.

***** You were spot on with your diagnosis. When i got the trans apart there was a drum in the rear of the trans (dont know its name) with a broken weld seem and burnt up/frozen clutches. i will post pictures and such when i get a chance.

I really love my ride and I’m determined to put it back on the road one way or another; the goal beeing an even Million!
I’ve watched all your videos concering this box and probably know them by heart now and I was hoping you could give me some advice.
I’m in total rebuild mode; VB, tranny, the works but I need some help with what and where to buy the rebuild parts, plus I would also have a couple of insider tips to ask for which I haven’t found answers to on your channel.

Love this guy! this is weird to ask here but im loosing my mind! I have Renault with same transmission. Issue it has is that i loose D after tranny warms a bit. If its cold it Works like charm. Sometimes it does that when i put on N or R it goes to D. I took valvebody out and got new one in (i made sure solenoids had same adjustment as in old one) new oil in it and correct level but sitll no go. I know this is long shot that guru c this msg but i have no clue what to do…

I repaired my 2006 Maxima's Transmission (Exactly the same trans as the one you repaired). After completely overhauling it, It says that it's on 5th Gear but it's really stuck on 2nd. It won't change gears no matter the RPM.
The TCS, SLIP, and Service Engine Soon lights are on and when you put Reverse and/or D it shifts very harsh. I did a Diagnostic and it said that the Cam position Sensor is bad and that the TCM is inactive even though it's new. Does the Cam Position Sensor affect the Transmission in a way? Thanks.
+Anthony Olivo™ yes it does just change the camshaft position sensor and you problem solved, you might have problem with the valvebody too
Alex Keller I resolved the problem a few days ago. It was that the Transmission bolts weren't torqued correctly. And the new valve body was defective too. Thanks for the reply BTW! It's appreciated.

Rebuild one of these aisin aw 55s do you use a master rebuild kiut of parts? What brand of spare parts do you buy? I have a aw55-50sn from a volvo v70 wagon I use to tow with. Thinking of wintertime overhaul to keep it reliable. Seen these kits from China for a couple of hundred dollars with plates and steels but unsure about those. Seen son Organ kits /parts online too. Hello Hiram. I have this transmission in my 2004 Volvo XC 90 all-wheel-drive with two. Five turbo. It now has 260,000 miles and is running strong shifts great. Do you think this is exceptional for this transmission? I change fluid twice a year
Hiram-- 2005 Volvo S40 AWD. I'm 95% certain that the bearing on the passenger side of the differential is bad and getting worse fast. Can I separate the case at the bell housing without dismantling all the other parts per the steps you demonstrated? The trans runs fine but there is a bearing grinding and it gets worse in 15 minutes of driving. I ruled out hubs, transfer case, axles, everything else. Will I be ahead to just scrap the trans? PS - You take that trans apart like a machine. Fun to watch although I'm ashamed to admit that.

I have taken out the 4 bolts, clutch packs, spring compress ring, and the larger snap ring in the center. Definite pump failure due to clogging of debris, large metal debris of 1mm in size can be seen near the center input shaft, I just cannot figure out how to remove the pump to show the client...
hy Hiram. i steel have the problem with the transmission AG4 01M . i rerepeare all the clutches and piston. i have the engagement of secound and third ... after a nice engagement comes the interruption..desengagment . it seems like the pressure decreases! i have change the valve body before . i see that i have a bad pushing on the drum 3.
I FOUN THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. OUTPUT AND INPUT SENSORS WIRE WAS IN RONG LOCATION. THE OUTPUT WAS WITH THE INPUT WIRE AND VICE VERSA

i have an isue with an chevrolet captiva transmission..(aisin 55-51)...after rebuild with bushing kit instaled seal kit instaled ,cleaned the valve body and everything, not the transmission is harsh on shifting from N to D and from N to R....i also have erro code on 5 gear and toque converter stuck open ...my gues is that upon reasamble of the valve body i mistakely set the "steped" pressure regulator sleeve...could be this the case Hiram?

Hello Hiram, If an axle shaft end snapped at the retaining ring groove and the broken end and ring fell into the transmission, could it be removed without disassembling the entire transaxle? This happened to me on a 99' Maxima with 240K miles. Not sure if it's worth the effort to and cost.
greeting! I have a problem with the Volvo gearbox 55/51 sn. no reverse. I cleaned the selenoid and disassembled the gearbox and there was no mechanical flaws that did not break or crack, but the front went smoothly and great in all gears. I'm asking for help.

Great video! I have a unit like this and it’s running hot, can you tell me why and it not sending any code. When it cool it runs great, but when it warns up it make I funny sound but still shift find. Fluid is to the right level and everything.

Hello, I have a Chevrolet Captiva 2007 model, a six-piston engine, 3.2 liters of petrol. I have a problem when I am driving the car and the engine temperature is in the normal mode and at a slow speed, there is a jingle and a ticking sound, especially when changing the first and second gears also in reverse. The gearbox oil was changed and the problem persisted. Is it because of the body of the valve or the problem of sensors?

Crazy question... I know these transmissions were used in tons of different vehicles ranging from Nissan to Toyota and even including my 2002 Volvo S60. Just curious, do the vehicles that use this trans all have the same bellhousing bolt pattern (on their engines) or do these trans all have proprietary bolt patterns specific to each brand?

I have an issue with an AW55-50 on 2001 Volvo V70. it works well except it don't engage the 3rd gear. it don't find it, over rev, and finally engage 4th if I'm enought fast. Oil is new, linear solenoids too, all electronics arounds are ok. Do you think the third gear is dead or is it about the valve body? Thank you very much for your reply!
Another great transmission video. Have not had the chance to do this unit yet, but now looking forward to it. Question: What method do you use to remove the small bushings out of the planets and the direct shaft? Looks like using a punch would be tough.

Thanks for sharing your videos, I am overhauling this specific trans and have run into an issue hopefully you can help with.. the direct clutch and 1-2 reverse clutches use a "cushion' spring in the pack along with the steels and frictions..my manual is not clear on which way the cushion spring goes in, do you know by chance?
