Maybe if it is grilled with sweet & spicy seasoning like "Ikan Bakar" or tare sauce (日本のタレ) it would taste better since the skin will maintain the fish structure over the grill. Coral fish with their thick skin are some of the best fish for grilling.

Betta fishes sleeps too. After 20-30 min in the dark they zone out and go into deep sleep.
I guess they are like dolphins where some part of the brain is on autopilot at all times.

逃げ込んで、エラを大きく広げる事で岩肌に掛かける
ことで引っ張りだしにくくするためだそうで、いわば
護身のためにあるようですね。

I have tried the 6 barred angel grilled on a BBQ in Bali before. It tasted quite ok. Maybe the smoke covered the smell. Give it a try.
