    It is definitely a borderline call. I had Don work on my dad’s old 026 and he got it running great again for me. For me, it was a nostalgia call and a sense of attachment for me since my dad passed a few years ago. I see a new 261 or 291 in my future

    I quickly realized you were going to recommend him to buy a new saw as the repairs were adding up fast. I personally think another great option for the occasional use homeowner type saw user is to rent a chain saw. (1 -2 times a year user)

    • @crazzywolfie
      @crazzywolfie ปีที่แล้ว +1

      renting is really not that great at about $80-$100/day. rent it about 4-5 times and it would have just been cheaper to buy especially if you are willing and able to use an electric chainsaw. you can get corded electric chainsaws and they do work pretty good as long as you don't bog them too much or too long.

    • @stinkycheese804
      @stinkycheese804 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could see renting a saw if you have an event where a very large tree fell and needs removed, but not so much for regular maintenance of property. 1-2 times a year, just buy an electric saw unless the distance means you need a homeowner grade gas saw. Granted it's not just times per year but how much cutting, each time.
      Another option is quit thinking about ideals and just continue to use the saw. More dangerous? Maybe, but there are lots of other dangers using a saw that harm people more often so meh, make sure to keep the chain tension right and the bar lubed. So what if it goes slower if it's not a productivity issue?

    The secret to fixing any equipment is to being diligent not to let it get to a point of disrepair. Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you. I have a 025 that's over 30 years old, and still running strong after only changing spark plugs, one bar and half a dozen chains. For occasional use, it still holds it own, even when compared to my 261CM

    • @JHruby

      Except that the new saw will NOT last as long. The saws Stihl is making today are nothing like the quality of that 023. They are price point saws designed to satisfy a limited homeowner use.

      On the other hand - if it takes you half an hour, charge a half...
      But if it takes you longer than 30 minutes, charge your actual time!

    Great recommendation and piece by piece estimate. The dealer is going to cost you more, but you will typically get great service as that's what they work on mostly.
    A saw like that is in pretty good condition overall, a new bar, chain, air filter, carb kit, etc. if you do the work yourself its still gonna cost you to get Stihl parts, but that saw will probably run another 20+ years....however, like you mention in the video, save the money and put it towards a new saw, keep the old saw for a backup...new bar and chain, tune up fuel lines, etc, and still hang onto it.

    Kind of funny watching this video. I have had bad experience from shops. I live just outside of Thunder Bay Ontario. I bought a old HUSQVARNA 266SE from a old bush worker. He said it ran just fine. I found it did not run just fine so thought I would bring it to the dealer for a tune up. Was told it needs new crank seals. Well not wanting to spend any money on a old saw I decided to just store it for parts. Watch one of your videos for carb adjustments and followed your instructions to set the carb up. The saw has run just fine for over three years now. Not all shops are created equal.

When the video was over, another one was displayed in suggestions about if it was necessary in the first place. I had to watch it! This is what I would do if I were to fix it myself. I would buy a new saw, the best quality I could find at a reasonable price. I would save the old saw and pull the exhaust to check the piston for wear. If scored, trash the saw. Of it's good, I would then fix the saw up little by little over time myself so I wouldn't feel the bite of the cost all at once. Once in good shape again, I would keep it as a back-up in case the new saw crapped out. New stuff isn't as well made so you never know when it will fail. As for the fix up of the old saw, you might get away with finding a used bar in better shape, get a new chain, replace the carb lines and wash the filters with soap and water, rinse them well and let dry
    Then run the saw once in awhile to keep the crank seals wet. See what happens.
    If all else fails, the old saw could make a good boat anchor!😄
    Good assessment and vid, as usual.👍

The second estimate of $300 for carb kit, new bar, addressing some other problems plus the original issues is a little more in line…but most “consumer saws” are a bit of a throw-away item…not worth putting much $ into (unlike a pro level saw)

    I have a question. What is the normal oil ratio - gas mixture for Husqvarna 61?... Is okay 30/1000 ( 30:1 ) ?

    • @Gordon_L
      @Gordon_L ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That would give you 33:1 which is probably a bit more oil than you need but perfectly safe , you might just make more carbon in the exhaust port area and maybe foul the plug over time .
      The Husqvarna website says - "The correct mixing ratio for your Husqvarna is detailed in your product's owner's manual. But as a general guide, a fuel-to-oil ratio of 50:1 is recommended for Husqvarna products up to and including 75cc. "
      So that works out to 20ml oil per litre of gas , just use a very good quality oil designed for air-cooled two strokes .

    Taking the time to learn how to care for your own equipment is the best option. This stuff is not rocket science. A chainsaw sharpener from Harbor Freight does a decent job and if you have two or three chains you will always have a sharp saw. There are videos all over that show you how to do most repairs on just about anything around your house. You could buy the parts online and do most of these things for under a hundred dollars. Then have the more technical repairs done by a shop. Looking around for a reputable shop can save you money as well. DIY is the best way to go.

    Hi Don
    Great video!
    I don't know if you still have my contact info. If you don't, let me know...but if you do, give me a quick call. It would be great to catch up! I'm hoping to be up in your area before winter. Love your channel!

    $300.00 for a Chain sharpen, a Plug & filter? Yes Dave's Brother, was about to be taken for a ride. The Guy could buy himself a new Saw. 🤐

    And with a new chain, don't use that worn spur drive; more money. How about that 20+ year-old coil? On and on and on.

    I am very confused. Why in the world would Dave's brother have taken the saw elsewhere instead of just shipping it (if you aren't local) to you? Even then, ship it to Dave and make it His Problem, LOL!

    That’s just what it costs to get a dealer to fix your stuff. I you can’t do it yourself, your better of buying a new one. But I wouldn’t pay $70 for a 15” .325 bar. Buy a Husky, their easier to work on lol.

    I mean if he does the work him self and buys an orgeon bar and chain for about 50 bucks and than still kit (spark plug, fuel filter, air filter) 10bucks and other parts for around 30 bucks than he has a almost brand new saw for 100 bucks not even that if he buys after market parts

    This is absurd. The use wasn't described but for that perceived occasional use, just get some homeowner grade saw for $150. If the carb has problems sooner because homeowner grade, slap another $15 carb on every decade or so, as long as you don't leave old ethanol content fuel in it to foul it up faster.
    I'm always fascinated by people who spend the most amount of money possible to get a job done, if they are not pros doing the work all day, every day.

    That saw is only worth maybe $150 US, so yes, that quote is BS!

    Jeeze don’t buy another one and never do routine maintenance. He had to have spent more time putting the chain back on than cutting with a chain that loose.

      I'm guessing you have never worked in small business? Doing things for free is quickest way to bankruptcy.
      My son is a mechanic and I insist on paying him for working on my car.
