When I was a kid, all we had to know was the on-off switch, how to change the batteries, and worst case, change the bulb. As for light, you just get what you get, for as long as the batteries last. That's it. Then you've earned the Boy Scout Flashlight Merit Badge!
Another significant benefit to mention for removable batteries vs built-in is the ability to carry spare batteries and quickly reload rather than having to locate a power source and wait for recharge. Great video, love your content!
removable batteries arent only for spares my battery broke for no reason in my c7 so i got a new one and it works sadly it cant do turbo bc it turns off after few seconds (some overheat protection most likely)
Great video on the fundamentals Jon! Might I also add that LED CRI known as Color Rendering Index might also be a factor to consider. For example, the sun (100 cri) will make a red apple look red in appearance, whereas a low cri flashlight (below 80) would make that same apple appear slightly blue, orange, yellow etc depending on the LED.

Amongst my top three considerations are usually beam pattern, colour temperature, and cri. Ironically three parameters often neglected by the biggest, and most expensive, names. And, as an enthusiast, I place a lot of value on the "right to repair".

While I have sufficient cover currently, I am making a checklist of the things to bear in mind when buying flashlights as gifts. I also thought that your demonstration of the various red light modes was very slick, timing the demo with the relevant statement worked well.
I was wondering about the beam distance calculation and you cleared that up perfectly for me! I always find the flashlight/torch specs a little misleading and more related to marketing hype, especially the time in Turbo mode with that little asterix! I have found though that the dimming from Turbo in a few seconds of operation, is actually not that noticeable to the eye, and is quite acceptable. I like a beam with a bright hotspot and good projection distance, AND a decent amount of spill. Nothing worse than some critter creeping around at your left or right but outside the beam! 😨

I got a question about the ms 18 I got how does it reaches so far out as a flood light when I turn it on 100, 000 lumens that thing has reach of a spot light but with a wider area cover does lumens increases throw to?

Thanks a lot for this video, it explains exactly what I wanted to know. However, I still have another important question: How do rechargeable torches cope with being hardly ever used? I've killed a several batteries by no using the item (enough) - battery drill and portable phone among them. When I'm buying a keyring torch for some emergency, there's a good chance the light won't be used at all in summer and once or twice in winter. Would a torch with LR44 batteries be better in that case? Thanks in advance for your answer!
Strobe is better used on animals that tend to stare at solid light or even approach. Bright light tends to stop someone getting aggressive, as they cant see you and fight effectively, while strobe messes with you both.
I read somewhere, that flashlights above 500 or 600m throw does not matter much, as the capacity of human eye starts to enter the math. So above 600m and darkness your eye is the problem, to much distance, too dark, no eye resolution anyways
Hey Jon. Are there other brands just as good as Nitecore and Fenix? A friend challenged me to find a flashlight that was not Nitecore, Fenix, or Manker. I am not finding one that is a must have. I bought the TK20R V2 because of one of your videos. Earlier today I ordered the PD32 V2.

Very useful! I would like to see a comparison between crappy chinese flashlights and batteries, decent ones and premium. When my uncle called me and asked if a facebook flashlight costing 16 euros is good i said 16 euros is a good 18650 and gave him my almost new MT10. In my language (romanian) torch is very close to "torță" so our first thought is its about a camping flashlight like Ledlenser ML4 or NitecoreLR50. Nobody would search youtube for a 'torch'.

There are more English speakers that use "flashlight" than in all the English speaking countries combined, Americans included. So on youtube, "flashlight" is the word to use. Also torches are sticks with fire at one end used in medieval times together with pitchforks.

Fenix is good but some of their beams have a green tint on their lower power settings. My sure fire has whiter more pleasant beam.

Keep an eye on colour temperatures.. if I compare a 6500 kelvin light against a 4000 kelvin light I can see further with the 4000 kelvin

yes - two identical flashlights in design - the one with the most lumens will have the longest range

I've been searching for lights. Lots of lumens 1000 minimum, long runtime 10 hours minimum- It's rough.

I think long distances are compromised in practical use - but can be reached depending on conditions and everything else in the video
