That’s actually kind of funny, because I’ve had the 8-Bit version of Big as my ringtone for over two and a half years and I have yet to get sick of it.
I like how on your picture, almost all of the icons represent custom power-ups, with one being a power-down. Here is a list: PaRappa's Hat = 1-up - Collect as many as you can! If you run out of them, it's Game Over! Burger = Speed Up - This is used for speeding up the player. Dash with it on your skateboard to reach max speed! Heart = Life Extend - This gives you extra HP, but watch out! No HP means you lose a life. Purple Arrow = Giant PaRappa - This is used for crushing enemies and destroying walls to get to certain areas, but be quick! This only goes on for about 20 seconds before the player shrinks back to normal. Soldier Helmet = Invincibility - This turns you into a rappin' maniac! Every enemy you touch will be defeated, but to really rack up the score, you have to defeat as many enemies as you can and trigger a combo, although you have to do all this in a set time limit of 20 seconds. If you get a big enough combo, you will snag yourself a 1-up. Any combos bigger than that will net you more 1-ups. Shears = Disguise - You can't be seen by enemies in stealth levels with this power-up, but if you get hit by an enemy or projectile or touch a bowl of noodles, you will lose the disguise, so be careful of your surroundings! Cartridge = Bonus Game - You keep this after beating a level, but if you get hit or die with one, you lose it and can't get it back unless you restart the level, so be skillful! The bonus games can give you tons of points and lives, so find each on in every level--except boss levels, obviously--and you can unlock each bonus game if you have enough. Bowl of Noodles = Life or Power-Up Loss - It can screw you over a bit if you ever touch it, taking away a full heart of your HP in the process. It even follows you around for it! But, its weakness is the Invincibility power-up, because it just turns it into a sweet for you to collect. Microphone = Enemy Wipeout - It has to work on enemies onscreen, and gives you points for every enemy you kill with it. The bigger the combo, the more points you get, so try to get lots of enemies on-screen at one time, but don't get too many!
You could probably make a music box of the main melody of this and play it for your children. And then have them play the parappa series and recognize the stage select music and then watch em freak out and go tell their friends what the f*ck just happened.
If I ever man up and decide to have kids, I will do it. Sure, maybe in the future, they won’t find out about parappa at all, and the music box would just be a childhood memory, and they would never realize the connection at all, but *I* would remember it.
Fun fact: stage 8’s music is based off of the original awful music in stage 8, but for some reason it got removed replaced with another song and is only used in battle mode
