Also, something I never noticed until recently: aside from Norma/Tina, most of the girls AREN'T mean to Carrie when Chris isn't around, i.e in all the versions there's one girl who is nice to her and compliments her dress. They also mostly seem genuinely happy for her when she becomes Prom Queen. This makes me think that maybe most of them don't actually have ill will towards her and are just succumbing to peer pressure and the like.
In carrie 2013, when Heather and Carrie were alone in the bathroom after Heather noticed the broken mirrors, they didnt even say anything to eachother. Heather didnt even make a “mean” snobby look near her, just confused
I completely agreed with the fact the 2013 Remake of Carrie needed more screen time from all the girls, in a way to be “cheering up” the death scenes, we needed to know more about them, not being just a simple background characters. They did a poor job developing more complex characters like we saw in the 2002 version (that’s why I really enjoyed this movie). PJ Soles, Katharine Isabelle and Chelan Simmons are well know “scream queens” and I’m very happy they are part of the Carrie Universe.
love these analyses, man! “Carrie” has been overlooked in terms of individual characters with particular characteristics. these sort of things need to be talked more so thanks for being one of those people who look at simple things in the fictional world with a developed mind.
In the 2002 version u could see how much Helen started to like Carrie. I like how she stood up for her when Kenny was laughing & pulling faces at her. What a shame she was killed. It's interesting how the 1976 got around the laughing. In the book, everyone was, including Miss Desjardin. But they weren't mainly laughing because they found it funny - but the sort of nervous laughter that comes when something shocking happens. So Carrie interpreted that as everyone laughing at her expense. Obviously you can't really convey that in a film, so imagining everyone laughing was a nice touch.
@@BetterWithBob Sadly I think the shocked laughter quickly turned to malicious laughter, considering that some guy tripped Carrie over when she was trying to leave, which made people laugh even harder at her 🥺
@@theangelproductions Oh yes I forgot about that moment. Looks like the 2013 film was planning to get around that by having one of the popular girls trip her up on the way out.
I enjoyed this Video, as it helped solidify the relationships between the Girls, not fleshed out in the 1976 Screenplay. Thank you for preparing it. The grisly demise of Miss Collins always saddens me, as She demonstrably cared for, and was protective of Carrie, unlike any other. Carrie's unimaginable rage, was Directed at friend and foe alike, on the Gym floor. Herein lies the tragedy of her story.
Miss Collins didn’t bring it on herself, beyond making the understandable mistake of not listening to Sue when she was trying to warn her about the prank. I can’t fathom how anyone could reason she bears any culpability in the tragedy or her own death. She also happened to inadvertently save Sue’s life by throwing her out of the gymnasium. That said, this is a really interesting and well done video and I think it’s a testament to the lasting power and relevance of Stephen King’s story and its themes. Though I will say Brian De Palma’s amazing original film is probably the single biggest reason the story is so embedded in the public consciousness.
Sue would have busted Chris and Billy, and Carrie and Tommy could have moved out of the way. Carrie would have known that she had allies and the attempted prank wouldn't have sent her over the edge. Miss Collins jumped to a conclusion and paid the price
Norma was very cunning and sadistic as much as Chris . She even hangs with Chris all the time in the 76 movie . When collecting ballots I noticed off the bat , The snickering voice , And she knew by listening in that Carrie was going to prom because she knew through the meeting with miss collins Tommy, Sue and told Chris . Norma 1976 was a big player in the blood prank . And she laughed hard enough for all to hear when the bucket was dumped.
In the original book and 1976 film, Sue showed up to the prom ONLY to make sure Carrie was okay. Sue had constantly seen how Carrie was treated by classmates, teachers and other characters in the book and was really the only character (Save for the gym teacher) who felt sorry for her after the tampon harrassment so, she wanted to make sure that Tommy was treating her with nothing but kindness.
I saw that as social backwardness and use of obsolete language. I was in high school in the 1970s and then telling someone to "shut up" was a forceful way of telling them to "stop talking." In general use it still is. In circa 2002 the slang meaning of “shut up” often meant that you don't believe or are surprised by what someone just said. You are surprised or amazed. That is what the girl meant when finding out that Carrie made her own dress.
Geez...The 2013 version was the most intense. What I really dislike about a lot of teen films is how most of the time, all of the girl posse/bully gang are 100% mean.
i know Chelan from Final Destination 3, my fave film. i know Emilie from Lost, my fave series. and i know Kathrine from Ginger Snaps, one of my fave films. i just found out all of them are in this film and all of them are main characters im crying i must watch it.

Part of me was very sad because Helen died and would’ve been a great character in the TV show, but another part of me has a strong feeling the show would be very lackluster lol
The treatment of the girl posse in the 2013 version is so disappointing, especially the twins and Heather. Tina was great but she was underused too, even if not as much
Frieda Jason isn’t apart of Chris’s group in the book and the other movies. It’s noted that she might be in the book but there’s not confirmed sign of it. Also in 1976 she seems to be more of a ally to Chris and her group than a member.
I think these movies are so intersting, the 2002 version did kinda flunk but Emilie de Ravin's Chris was so good, and it's interesting to analyse stuff like this
I don't think Heather was in on the prank. I remember reading somewhere that they had two shots with Sue and Heather, one where she seems like she's lying, but in the final movie, it seems like she genuinely doesn't know that Chris is at prom. She still laughed at Carrie at prom, though, which ultimately makes her guilty. Side note: I absolutely loathe Tina (or in 1976's case, Norma)

I think the 2002 version does the best job with the popular girls. They are each memorable and get their own personality. I agree the 2013 version was disappointing. I read the original script and I wish they had kept it the final film closer to that. I wish they would have released all the deleted scenes. The mean girls have so much potential in the film but feel like glorified extras. It's especially frustrating because as you said in this version Carrie singles them out and they get pretty brutal deaths. Imagine Tina in the 2002 version getting 2013 Tina's death. Tbh, i think pj soles should’ve played Chris. I know Nancy Allen did a good job but I really wish Chris was more in line with her book counterpart and she acts more bratty than sociopathically. But pj soles could’ve portrayed the character extremely well.
That's an interesting thought. But I suppose Nancy was deferring to Brian De Palma as writer/director. He'd write the scenes and tell her to play Chris that way. She didn't even seem to know she was playing the main villain.
Yeah, I didn’t really get much mean girl vibes from Chris. I didn’t really get that immersed in her character because okay she was mean, but most of her mean-ness was from Billy and she even hesitated to pour the bucket. Tina would’ve been someone that could do something nasty like that
I'm not sure. In interviews, Sissy has said that she was auditioning for Carrie and really lobbying for the role - even rubbing vaseline in her hair to make it look greasy and wearing an old dress. Supposedly Brian DePalma tried to discourage her but she pushed for Carrie anyway. I do know that Amy Irving was a leading candidate before she got cast as Sue, and there was an unknown actress called Betty Slade in the running too.
It's curious to imagine how could Sissy be as a mean girl. I think her role as Pinky Rose after she wake from coma and changes her personality in 3 Women (1977) - where she started as shy, weirdly cute and childlike girl to a voluptuous, arrogant and rude woman.
