I love that in describing your hatred of Prue, you perfectly describe every woman with Eldest Daughter Syndrome. It's even mentioned in the show that because their mother died and Penny was raising them alone, Prue ended up stepping into the role of Piper and Phoebe's mother and never really had a childhood. Her character is not far off from how many parentified children turn out.
The Prue years were the best. They were more grounded in reality, showcased witchcraft a bit more accurately, showed a balance between their personal and witchy lives, and gave emphasis on the complex bond between the sisters. Seasons 1 - 3 were darker yet also warmer when it comes to family themes. I did enjoy Season 6 a lot but let's face it - it became a campy guilty pleasure at that point. The show shifted into total fantasy as opposed to real life incorporating magical elements.
They tried to be more accurate in the beginning but had tons of complaints about it not being accurate enough. I guess they gave up trying and just put their own twist on it.
@@randomclips888 Me too!! During the Prue seasons it was a lot more realistic and just showcased witches and demonic forces coexisting with our world. When Prue died, the show entered fairytale territory lol (even literally in Season 5 - the worst season imo). Also, Phoebe's character completely did a 180 flip after Season 2 and went from being a fun, warm-hearted youngest sister to a completely selfish and unlikable sibling.
The fact that Shannen directed All Hell Breaks Loose and gave us an episode of TV that would fit so nicely in some of modern day's best... what an incredibly talented woman. She faced so much misogyny from the press in the 90s and I am not surprised she felt she wasnt being given her due and walked away from the show. Like walking away from the show after doing that, absolute baller move. She just survived Stage 4 Cancer. I am so grateful we got three full seasons of Prue. 🙏
I was watching an interview the other day where she said that whenever she directs, she chooses color schemes based on a specific painting. That episode, she used a Dali painting to come up with the color themes, down to the clothing. Genius!
It's the one thing I come to appreciate and love about Shannen Doherty, the fact she always has many surprises up her sleeve. Don't ever underestimate her. 😉
She's not surviving it, unfortunately. In June she announced it had spread to her brain and was terminal. :\ I got really hopeful when I read this, thinking they'd beat it after all, but unless you know something from super recently...well, she still fought the hell out of it.
To me Prue was the one reason I enjoyed Charmed, she was the only one focused on actually saving innocents most of the time, even in the earlier seasons and especially in the later seasons. Plus, to me, she was the most-rounded character by the time she got killed.
All facts! Love Prue! Badass and strong. I hate that so many folks dump on her. I thought, at first, my like for her was more of empathy, since I’m the oldest of 3 myself, but I discovered she was more than that. When they killed her off I was devastated.
Definitely true, I love Prue as in and I think she's the best witch ever, but when they killed her I'm heart broken and the saddest episode ever 😔😔💔💔💔💔
I’ve said it once before and I’ll say it again Prue was the most well rounded solid character who by her end didn’t actually need the other two, in fact given the time skip if he power progressed she could just make two more of herself and use the power of 3 her damn self lol
Constance Burge wanted the show to be about sisterhood and women's empowerment. When she left, the show never felt the same. Brad Kern made it all about Piper's sons, random love interests, and skimpy outfits. Constance left because she became frustrated with the direction the storylines were going and because of disagreements with Brad Kern. Who knows what Charmed could have been if Constance stayed?
@@oh.sorry.dont.mind.meeeee she left after Season 4 - there’s conflicting sources saying that Constance decided to leave because she wasn’t happy with Shannon getting fired the way she did or because she wasn’t happy with the direction that the show was going in as she would lock horns with Brad Kern who kept pushing the romance and “monster of the day” plots. Could be a little bit of both and who really knows what the show would’ve become if she had stayed… Of course I think there would’ve been a lot more focus on family and the relationship between the sisters, but I kind of feel like it probably wasn’t the same to Constance since there was no way to replace Shannen/Prue.
Yeah… I mean don’t get me wrong. Brad was able to turn out some pretty good iconic episodes, but looking back there is a lot of inconsistency with the writing and it could get pretty freaking annoying at times. I say one of the few good things that came out out of him taking over was the creation of Paige, but yeah, I can’t help a think about what it would’ve been like if Constance hadn’t left and still had power over the writing.
@@withjust-a-bite1396 No, Constance left before Season 3. Constance probably consulted with actual witchcraft practitioners because the direction Season 1-2 had was very different while she was still there, there were tons of occult references and some inaccuracies, but actual witchcraft practitioners find Charmed to be favorable because of how it accurately portrayed their practice and struggles. After Constance left the direction completely changed.
Love this, but I disagree with Prue. A character who is struggling with grief whilst being the leader/eldest sibling? It made her such a deep and complex character, especially once we see her slowly release the role of needing to be everyone's protector and healing from the traumas of her mother's death and father's leaving. Yes, the show could have focused more on Piper and Phoebe too but Shannon made Prue the best character in this show imo
Imo it came off a bit “older sister hogs attention” she was also pretty bossy and tried to stop piper and Phoebe from being themselves and was wrong about stuff and had to apologize a lot, piper always seemed the most mature and respectful sister.
I personally believe that if Shannon hadn't been given nearly all the screen time, she wouldn't be so many people's favorite characters. What finally made me hate Prue permanently was the fact that even Piper's Wedding had to be all about her. Yes, her acting was pretty much always top notch, and because she was essentially the main character it was hard not to love her, but I despised her specifically because everyone always had to be shoved behind her for the "Greater Glory of Prue."
It is insulting for a 'man' to yap his trap about a female character at all. What does this nurf know about the character Prue and the actress Shannon. Prue is STILL a LOT of female viewers FAVORITE character in charmed. Who cares what you think prick!!
She was the most powerful sister, she always knew what to do and she was willing to protect her younger sisters at all cost. Season 1 - 3 were the best.
I know Shannen wanted to leave eventually but man i wish she stayed for one season, season 4 would've been a perfect finale for Prue and they could of slowly introduced Paige
@@feridedogan7653it hasn't been clear enough as to whether Shannen actually left or was fired. During Comic con interviews she stated that she wanted to leave even though the producers wanted her to stay and either Phoebe or Prue was gonna die. However, some people think she was actually fired that she didn't even know S4's pilot was shot without her knowing
@@feridedogan7653 actually yes there was tension between Alyssa and shannon back then a few years ago Alyssa and shannon made peace with each other which I was very surprised
God, the Angel of Death episode stuck with me from the night it aired. I was at a period in my life where I was twelve and my grandfather just died and I was so *_angry_* that he was taken from me, that nothing could be done to cure his cancer. Hearing this wonderfully played embodiment of death state, "I'm not good or evil, I just am," carved itself into my heart.
Prue’s swan song episode is probably the best episode of the entire show. So powerful. One of my favorite shows ever, but I will always be mad about two things: Prue leaving the series and how they made Cole descend into his madness. Cole and Phoebe’s love story deserves better. He should have stayed dead.
Oh gosh yeah, They really did Cole's character arc dirty. Like, I think it was the transition between season, but literally from one episode to the next anyone with faith in Cole or any positive attitude towards him went a complete 180 even though he started being more "good-guy" than ever before and then it was just the downward spiral until he got completely deleted from existence or whatever lmao. It makes me laugh it's so ludicrous, I'm still upset about it myself. Could've been handled way better. Even if the loveline didn't work out, I wish Cole just himself got a better end, he was one of the most intriguing characters to me. And while Prue was never my favorite, I still really loved her and she added so much to the show.
true ,i mean they should make being good for phoebe and him to be him , the writers are jerk to him , looking him he doesn't seems evil compare it to angel from buffy the vampire slayers who always do wrong and next be forgiven like nothing happened
Morality Bites is the best episodes of the show for me. The writing was thoughtful and nuanced! Phoebe was a great character, thinking she was going to be rescued, then finding out she had to die! Really strong material for Alyssa to work with!
The only thing that keeps it from being 100% perfect for me is Leo's forced acting in the bad future. But it's a solid episode aside from that. I've never got tired of rewatching it over the years. And superficially, Shannen looks stunning as a blonde ^_^
It's one of the highlights of this season. It's awesome to see how powerful they would have become if a continuity was there. I wonder why Piper's powers of molecular acceleration wasn't shown this episode. Everyone was fantastic in this episode.
@@JamaicanFlava Would have been helpful is she was able to Astral Project. It was dope to see a power that Phoebe ends up developing in the comics. Season 8, I believe.
@@tomahilaire3921 Yeah they honestly should've filmed this episode closer to the end of the season. I agree think the comics were like S9 & S10. I do wonder what the writers were thinking when they wrote this episode in regards to Phoebe's new powers.
Charmed was never the same once Constance Burge left the show. The show used to be about sisterhood and girl power. Somewhere along the way, it stopped focusing on the sisters and began focusing on Piper's sons.
@@mahfuzurchowdhury2765 Constance departed before the start of the third season. She was essentially pushed out of her own project. Brad Kern gradually assumed control, eventually reducing Constance to just a producer. Kern aimed to steer the show in a new direction, while Constance preferred to keep the spotlight on the sisters and their bond, rather than romantic entanglements. Kern ultimately dismantled the core of the show in the subsequent seasons.
As a fan of prue and the prue years more so, i can understand some of the confused attitudes. Sometimes she was very cautious and then very assertive and then funny and easy going all a sudden, and looking back its like you cant predict what prue you are going to have. But i love prue for her presence she commands and she does great. Prue years are more compelling because it feels grounded a little more in some reality
I loved the first 4 season of charmed! I was never a Prue fan but after rewatching it her character growth was so amazing. Her character storylines are some of my favourite episodes. I think what I didn’t like was that it felt like she was the main character & the strongest & the best & smartest etc. It seemed like she was a Mary Sue. I wasn’t a fan with her being a better fighter than Phoebe because that was kind of her thing. There were a few other things but I can’t remember atm.
I think your initial take on Prue is pretty dismissive. She’s not the culmination of a “focus group.” She had a complicated relationship with her father and with Phoebe in the beginning. She carry’s around a lot of grief and trauma from the loss their mother. This trauma fuels Prue’s actions. Piper and Phoebe were allowed to be more carefree and that showed in the show’s writing of the character. Prue is in my opinion the most complex and layered of all of the sisters.
I completely agree. I also think it shows the role that so many older sisters (including my own) end up taking as sort of a third parent and the pressure that gets put on them to be helpful and successful.
Prue was the best character in the show and had the most realistic character development and actually took being a witch seriously!!! … too call her a “focus group” of a character is crazy!!!
@@DanielJosephBaker I mean Prue was portrayed way too strong in the first seasons. To the point where it felt like she was the main-main character. I fault Shannen for that, who probably asked for no lesss than that. When she left, it became a lot more balanced between the sisters. Piper dominated at times but Phoebe and Paige were still the focus of way more stories
@@pok3rfacReturns I mean she was the main-main character. That's how it was written. A lot of ensemble shows have a character that's a little more main character than the others.
The seasons with Prue were my favorite! The sister bond was stronger and I liked how it was darker. Plus Prue was a strong character and she had so much character development.
I disagree that the show was the best because of Prue. While she was also my favorite, the reason why the later seasons sucked for me is simply because it got more childish and lame with all the weak plot episodes like with the fairies, the one where they became super heroes, but most of all, that ridiculous concept of a magic school.
@@sandiego2380 I respect your opinion but I didn't say the first 3 seasons are the best because of Prue. I said Prue was the reason I love Charmed. Yes I said seasons 1-3 are the best but I didn't say it's because of Prue. Though she's a big part of it.
Funny, Prue was absolute my favorite :) and the Prue era was also my favorite part by a long shot. I felt that it was darker and less campy. Really enjoyed your take on it!
The Prue years were the best because the writing was more mature, strong in the witchcraft mythology and grounded in reality. Season 2 was the weakest but I still liked it because it gave the writers a chance to explore themes with a more lighter tone but the writers made up for it with season 3. Season 3 was Charmed at its peak. It was darker, more consistent and it pushed the sisters to new heights. The episode Power Outage was one of the best highlights of the series and it improved their relationship.
Tbh, I think charmed taught me a lot about being an independent woman, I was a young teen when the show aired in my country, and the characters taught me things that no other show could have at the time I think. The women in the show always showed strength and perseverance, but also emotions and love. I don't think I'd be the same person without this show.
@Logia SD i think everyone is entitled to their opinion. Urs is to be respected and so is her opinion or any other woman wanting the same... There is a diff between being dependent and getting support a huuuge one
@Logia SD your comment screams that her opinion is wrong. Plus please read correctly or open ur mind a little, you are saying that everyone needs help, what i am saying is, needing support, help or getting doesn't mean you should be dependent to other people. You can be independent and get support but that doesn't mean that without that support you won't make it. Which in case you were dependent you wouldny make it without it. And please do me favor and don't be on the defensive so quickly i ain't fighting you nor lecturing you as you claim
@Logia SD 🤦♀️🤦♀️ typical... sorry, wom't be wasting my time with you anymore, you only seem to read ur own words ciao have fun being dependent or whatever
I would have loved for Prue and Paige to have acted together, it would have been great. I used to like Phoebe but Prue is my girl, has always been my girl, I really love who Prue was and Paige was beautiful too, if they would have acted together it would have been great.
I believe Rose and Shannen had cameos in the film Nowhere and that's the only time they were ever on screen together, but they knew each other before Charmed.
@@miagrass I have never seen the reboot so I cant say if it is bad but it would be awesome to see a show, a movie or something with Rose and Shannen in, a new one. I know they support each other and that is wonderful but I have loved Charmed since the beginning and I still have this dream about Charmed coming back and Prue never dies but Paige join the family and everything is awesome and badass.
@@emnordinproductions6558 it's trash to me since they no respect for the og 💯 they could've have reach out and the first season and second and third about Wyatt and Chris and their cousins and family about them just to push the show and allow their og charmed fans to just idk nerd out 🤷♀️😂 and new charmed would've gain old and new supporters fans and then have newbies take over.
Yes Prue was kind of OP, but I do feel that she was flawed like Piper and Phoebe were portrayed in the first seasons. Prue’s issue was perfectionism and having to be the strongest, fastest, bravest, smartest, ect. And when she didn’t live up to that personal expectation, it really destroyed her confidence.
Prue is my favorite Character 😍. She was the best, and knew that she was because she worked for it 💯. She did come off prideful, however I would argue she just confident and took the challenges they faced head on; A.K.A. *Prue Understanding the Assignment 💅🏾* . Also as big sis and team leader she would rather it her then her sister and the world.
I was 7 when it started. I grew up watching it, and many say the new version is about independent women.... are you kidding me? I'm from Brazil, back then it was all about marrying a good man and being a good wife. 3 women living alone, independent, trying to grow and conquer their dreams without losing emotion, love... this show was amazing. At first it was about the story of witches and their powers... after the first few episodes it's not just about that completely
@@BetterWithBob Original charmed was about 3 sisters who happeed to be witches, spinoff was about 3 witches who hapened to be sisters. I watched remake whole 2,5 episodes and coulnt watch more.
As the eldest of three, I felt Prue accurately portrayed the eldest sibling. First one up, last one down. She that was traumatized early on became kind of hyper vigilant. Then, taking on even more responsibility along with actual power. The evolution into super witch is exactly what I would’ve done to spare the younger ones the pain to give them the freedom I had when I was their age. And killing her off was a fabulous story move- though it hurt like all hell breaking loose. It showed how the younger ones really depend on the oldest without realizing it but become stronger because of the response.
As much as I liked seasons 4-8, some of the best character-centric episodes were in seasons 1-3: Prue: All Hell Breaks Loose Piper: Awakened Phoebe: Morality Bites Not only are the story good, but also the moral stories of each episodes was just top notch!
I had forgotten that Dougherty directed as well as acted in the Season 3 finale. I’m surprised she didn’t do further into directing, she handled a very complex script well and still acted the heck out of it 🙌
It's so interesting that consistently - both in the comments below and in real life - I hear Charmed fans talking about Prue/Shannen as their favorite sister. When the show was airing, I always felt like each character had their own arc and was an equal part of the trifecta, but in retrospect, Prue WAS probably made to be the focal character by Spelling & co, especially in terms of her magical strength & personal relatability. I think if I had to choose, Phoebe/Alyssa was my favorite because she was the "heart" of the show (the empath, the one always in relationships - especially the storyline with Cole, etc). Overall though, it's fair to say that after Shannen's departure, Piper/Holly became the focal character, again both in terms of being the most powerful witch and also the (new) eldest sister with the most responsibilities. I really wonder how much of the show's evolution was serendipitous and "lucky" and how much was brilliant decision-making behind the scenes...I mean even down to the mythology aspects of the oldest sister always being the most powerful one with an active power, etc. So many great nuances!
Yes I think Prue was originally designed as the focal character because Shannen was bringing the name recognition to the show. Her being attached meant they could cast Holly as Piper (and Shannen and Aaron Spelling fought for her because the higher ups didn't think she had "star power"). And Lori Rom was the original Phoebe, so they weren't going to have a name in the role but then when Alyssa came on board and later Rose, who was also a reasonable name thanks to Scream, it became an ensemble. I would have to be the odd one out and call Prue my least favourite lol, with a tossup being between Paige and Phoebe
Thank you for this video. I’m in tears as I write this. Charmed meant so much to me growing up. I had a horrific childhood but charmed was there as my safe place. Thursdays at 6:00pm... never forgotten. 💙
I just loved how prue was balanced they would constantly talk abt personal gain but prue was the sister that used her power in day to day task constantly trained and honed her skills like their grams did while the other sisters kind of didn’t not sure if that makes sense but it’s something I notice
I love Charmed and I love the Prue era. Shannen Doherty is one of the reasons I love acting and want to pursue it as a serious career. Her acting is just phenomenal. From Beverly Hills 90210 to Charmed and her other indie movies etc. She is a timeless talent and a true thespian. Always delivering! You may not like the Prue era over the Paige era but you can't deny she acted the crap out of it and directed 3 EPISODES! Directing yourself is not an easy job. Furthermore, post season 4, the show to me became a gimmick and a sell out. Seeing what they could transform Alyssa Milano into and how skimpy they could make her. It became too lighthearted in tone and focused way too much on their love lives rather than their sisterly bond like seasons 1-4... The show also glorified and centred around Phoebe and how "great" she was at EVERYTHING. Really gaslighting the audience. If you thought the Prue era was praising Prue, then observe what they do with Phoebe, post Prue. It didn't share the limelight equally, which I feel season 1-3 did, albeit season 1 was evidently more Prue focused but it is Shannen's show - she owns a percentage unlike the other girls. Mr. Spelling approached her first and wanted her to do it. She helped give everyone their jobs and was involved with casting. She is an amazing woman to this day
Exactly ! She even said so herself , that she disliked they way she was turned into a pin-up girl. You saw the beginning in season 3 , they slowly sexified prue and phoebe . Aaron spelling would have never condoned that . He picked Alyssa because of what he saw in her , not how she looked liked
Prue was the best character of the series she was the eldest mothet type who had to take on a leadership role to help raise her sisters, the Prue years were the best years of the show honestly
Didn’t Alyssa Milano recently come out and say that much of the drama on set with Shannen Doherty was actually perpetrated by her and apologised for it? I always thought it was telling that Shannen Doherty and Holly Marie Combs remained so close for years after Shannen Doherty left the show.
@@therealameliabedelia7821 Maybe. I mean, I do remember hearing storis about Shannen being jealous with the fact that Alyssa was become the more popular star. and that she didn't like the fact that many of the later episodes were starting to become Pheobe centric. but who really knows what happened? all i really know is that the show was never the same for me after she left.
@@sdb7092 Alyssa said in a recent interview that she was the reason for all the drama with Shannen. She took responsibility for it. Just sad that's it too little too late lol
I feel like the reason the Prue years were so amazing is because you actually felt the sisterly bond between Prue, Piper and Phoebe as well as the natural frustrations and fights that all siblings have. Something gets lost when Paige comes in because she’s technically their sister but they don’t have the same history and relationships. I also feel like the first few seasons were more grounded and relatable because they spent more time developing the characters rather than introducing a new recurring story arc every over week. There also seemed to be more consequences for the sisters as even though they were magical they couldn’t simply wave their fingers and put everything to rights. The later seasons seemed more cheesy and over the top to the point that the show lost what made me love it, which is that the sisters were normal women who happened to have incredible powers.
To me the most interesting episodes are the ones where they are stripped of their powers or have to think outside the box. It shows that they can't always rely on their powers but have to outsmart their enemies (or both). While Buffy is an amazing show, come to think of it, there is little suspense because she is so powerful we know she's gonna defeat every enemy without breaking a sweat and killing a regular vampire is mostly played off as a joke so there are no stakes (no pun intended). While yes every episode of Charmed ends up with them defeating every enemy in the end it was always cool to see them using their powers in a creative way. Like in one episode they couldn't banish an enemy with a spell so they instead turned him into a tree. That's creative.
Excellent point :) I think Helpless is the only Buffy episode where she's left without her powers? And the sisters would always have to rely on their intelligence or quick thinking to save the day - like the clever way Prue freed Piper from possession by killing her so Terra would possess Leo and then revive Piper so they could vanquish her with the Power of Three
Season 1 and 3 are my favorite too, there are so many good episodes in the Prue years, back when the focus was on sisterhood (more on that on your next video about the Paige era). Like you said, i used to LOATHE Prue when i first watched the show as a preteen because it was so centered around her since Shannen was the bigger name and the first one to sign a contract, but rewatching the early seasons as an adult, i appreciate her more and i like the dynamic with the other two sisters. They had great chemistry, despite the alleged on set problems between Alyssa and Shannen. I liked the darker tone of the episodes, the conflict between the sisters and the real life consequences of using magic or wanting a normal life. They did a great job mixing everyday issues with supernatural elements. The characters were nuanced, relatable, flawed and likable. More importantly they didn't complain about saving innocents instead of going for facials or having to write their advice column! The nostalgia hits hard, i'll always love the early Charmed seasons and especially the phenomenal season 3 finale! That was incredible!
I liked this show its in early seasons (Seasons 1-4) because of how scenes were shot, the balance between their lives and witchcraft, how the dark cinematography played into their spells, powers and antagonists. And there were overall more locations scenes were shot from. I even liked the subtle character moments and mundane conversations; all of this was lacking in the show's later years. Which combined with all the stuff you mentioned in the intro of the video made it far less entertaining in its later years. Alongside the Halliwell's become more unlikable as the show progressed. This is evident with my favorite character Piper, who despite being my favorite debatably became the worst character. Despite its issues I feel like there's a charm to enjoying the show. I also dislike how later years focused less on the sisters (especially Paige) and was more about everything else. Phoebe gets it the worst with how unrealistic and self-serving her advice column was. Also, while your criticisms of Prue are valid, I don't mind it as much because the same thing happens with Piper and Phoebe once Prue dies, the narrative would favor them and would get away with things others would get shamed for. And they stuff they do are worse than Prue, its really all about perspective.
Charmed for me ended after Season 4. Everything thereafter was pure garbage. Prue of course was my favorite character. Being the eldest sibling myself I related very much to Prue. Having to be strong and assertive and protecting my younger siblings while at the same time battling my own inner demons. Charmed was such a great show during her Era and chemistry between all three actresses were electricity! After she died the relationship between Phoebe, Piper and Paige..to me...felt like three roommates living together.
Piper and Phoebe still had that typical sibling bond and most times with Paige but I liked that they kept Paige doing her own thing as she did all the years she did before she met them.
Thank you so much for the video! I can't imagine how much effort you put into making this video for us. I remember when I first watched Charmed with voiceover in my language, I was always so fixated on the three sisters and different monsters each episode. This is such a nostalgic video for me. Thank you so much!
I couldn't stand the Paige years. I felt like they lost the plot of the sister element. It was about them separately with interconnected plots occasionally. Prue was an older sister who loved deeply and had to be the parent since their dad was gone and mom dead. Grams couldn't be a witch and parent full time. Something later seasons showed is a Halliwell issue. Instead Prue had to step in, was parentified, and had trouble letting that go. She also showed that inner strength can come at a price since she wasn't really as emotionally available as Piper and Phoebe wanted. Leading to a lot of issues. After all, she's the one who got a degree that worked well in SF, putting a steady check in the budget, instead of following dreams like her sisters. I think she's often misunderstood because some people have never had to take those roles on and relate.
I understand a lot of people have mixed feelings against Prue, but from the first moment I watched the show, I instantly liked her. Yes, she was bossy and a bit controlling, but that didn't make her hateful at all. In fact, I admired her. After having her childhood stolen from her, leaving her feeling like she has to be the parent Piper and Phoebe were robbed of, protecting the ones she loved was practically imbued into her. No matter what happened, even when she disliked Phoebe at the beginning, she continuously loved her nonetheless. And watching her grow from a rigid hard-working woman living for her sisters to someone who can actually think about herself was my favorite part about her and I feel like many people should give her credit for that. Prue, at first, was a complete workaholic. Work was her child. But by season 2, she gave up auctions and turned to her true passion. That alone was growth. And about her personality being contradictory....I personally do not have an issue with it. I try to see it as her true self shining through, especially in the episode when she pretended to be the assassin Hellfire. She felt the freedom for the very first time and only through certain moments is she able to break through her mental chains. Prue may seem like the "main" character or the "mary-sue", but that doesn't make her less of a well-rounded character. Especially after Andy's death, she has shown so much growth. She has her fears, and that's okay. Imperfections is what makes a character memorable. Once she started getting used to the witch stuff, she became determined to help the innocent. For example; the crime guy in season 2 (forgot his name, but he's the one who escaped then went back to jail). While the others distrusted him, she had hope. Or when she wanted to help the guy whose daughter was murdered in S2. Or, for instance, the warlock-turned-priest in S1. We cannot deny that her character progressed from a bossy workaholic to a kind, protective and strong witch. If only the writers didn't kill her off, we would've been able to see her truly heal from her loss of childhood. Personally, I think the reason people resonate with her so much is because she's realistic. Like many real-life people, she was forced to raise her sisters from an early age due to her absent father and late mother, and adopting the motherly role caused her to mature faster than she should have. This is why she seemed too "adultish" at first. Any older siblings who has been in her situation can relate. This is why I'm starting to grow wary of the seasons after 3. Like will it take on serious subjects such as a ruined childhood, depression (bad luck episode) and grief? I also hope they don't act like Prue never existed like what some shows do. The first few episodes will be the characters grieving, then they'll never mention her name again. Ugh I hate that. I know not many young viewers like the authoritative type, but as a young viewer, I see a sister willing to do anything for her sisters and to me that is admirable. If she was a care-free no-faults type of character at the beginning, I truly doubt anyone would like her. I'm still in the middle of watching the show, but I was pissed off when I learned that she was going to be replaced after S3. I just found the "oh a new sister appeared" discovery kind of overwhelming since it's The Power of Three for a reason, and I just don't like replacing main characters in general. It makes me feel like we watched so many episodes of a fleshed out character that we grow attached to only for them to be replaced by another version. I'm sure Paige is great, it's probably going to take me quite some time to get over Prue though. Anyways, that's just me. Prue's my favorite character, for many reasons other than her cool ass powers lol
The Prue era is the only era i recognize. Even my dvd collection ends at 3. And its not just about Prue, as stated, the tone was different, darker and more grounded. It was more Buffy than Sabrina. That quickly shifted when Paige came along
I loved the idea that Shannen wanted the show to go a more darker route after Season 3 but sadly she left also with Constance. I hate the fairytales-esque show became after Season 4 and the sisters became annoying, whiny and focused more on who shows more skin and mainly focused on finding the right man for them. What I didnt much very liked abt Season 3 was that they focused too much on making Prue the "superwitch" when equally they are at their strongest when theyre together. Also that Cole thing that was dragged on for sooooo long.
nah i love the fairy tale stuff with adult things its very fun to watch yet still had those dark moments i feel like tv shows thats all dark n shit are just boring having some eps thats r lighter and are able to show personatily like that is cool
Charmed is my guilty show 100% I rewatch all the way up to Season 7 bc Season 8 isn’t my favorite but my only real problem with the show is when Alyssa became a producer and everything became about her character and as the seasons themselves progressed they became low key sex objects
Multiple producers have spoken up about the toxic and sexist environment in the Charmed writing room and set. Brad Kern, who has faced allegations of misconduct and sexual harassment from multiple women, removed Constance Burge from her own creation. He intended to eliminate Shannen and Constance, and he succeeded. Brad steered Charmed in a different direction, disregarding Constance's desires. Additionally, he mocked Alyssa when she gained weight due to an illness. He and his associates consistently dressed Alyssa and Rose in revealing outfits and attempted to pressure Holly into wearing a push-up bra. I can't help but think about how different the later seasons could have been if Constance had stayed.
ngl at the beginning I didn't really like Paige, and being very pro-Cole/Phoebe, to the point where I was rooting for the Source (Cole) against her. After Cole left, and once the shadow of Prue's greatness wasn't so overbearing, I started to like Paige a bit more.
@@BetterWithBob but why tho Cole is evil always will be his destiny was to defeat nothing can save him and Paige was right she was just looking out for her sister y'all got weird taste in men and Romance.
@@miagrass i think its just the star crossed lovers and wanting to see him choose to suffer then over come it and actually change for love tthats what ppl who wanted cole and phobe to be together wanted to see i wanted that but i understand why he didnt become that and that hes always would be evil
I think Charmed was the best show ever! I loved both Prue and Page’s era! I have watched the whole thing so many times that I know all the words! It was just a fabulous show!
The prices were the best! The first 3 seasons with Prue ate the seasons I watch only. It just didn't feel the same with Page. It was so different with out pure.
I love these types of vlogs and dissertations, very well done. When you almost showed Charmless reboot and quickly said, "But we won't talk about it..." Lol! It reminds me of other creators when they talk about ATLA "There is no Legend of K reboot" and then the famous line "There is no ATLA in universe war" 😂
What a great analysis ! Actually finishing my master’s degree, I would say this is a university’s quality analysis ! Ideas well connected and demonstrated through the use of rigorously well researched clips ! Congrats !
I still think Shannon’s idea where the themes got darker and the focus should remain on the strong bond between the sisters and how much that evil could really corrupt or test it was brilliant! Brad Kern was an idiot for keeping it campy and not expanding on the Wicca aspect but instead using tired gimmicks.. I honestly get tired after season 4. And I say this as a Rose McGowan fan! I thought Paige was a fun edition but she really only served to fill a hole, her story was rushed at the end like she was an afterthought
So I’m watching charmed for the first time and I love all 3 characters. I’m at s4 ep 1 after prue dying and I’m unsure if I should carry on watching. I really enjoyed the 3 sisters being together
I personally think the show does a very good job at the transition. It's probably one of the most successful situations of swapping one main character out for another
Charmed is and always will be one of my favorite shows. The story and its themes were timeless and the characterization was incredible. Each character was well-rounded and complex it's distinct personalities. My favorite part was the foundation of the show, the bond between the three sisters. For me, there family dynamic was relatable and it was also warm and endearing. I still think seasons 1-3 were the best because the show was darker, more grounded, and the sisterly bond was stronger, but I still enjoyed the rest of the show. I also know the show would have been even months re legendary and a million times better if the original creator Constance stayed and wasn't kicked off her own show. To me, Brad Kern ruined the characters, especially Leo and Phoebe and their grandmother. He also ruined the worldbuilding that was established.
i’m rewatching charmed after a few years. & the prue years are still my favorite. i loveeeeeee the darker tone. and prue is definitely my favorite sister. she’s very complex and a well rounded character. paige was fun, but i just really enjoyed the earlier dynamic more.
Charmed is like Beverly Hills 90210, Its better with Shannon Dorthey. And when i say its like Beverly Hills 90210 i obviously don`t mean its the same type of show. Because you know its not.
My favorite show of all time. And yes. I'm a Prue Era fan for sure, but mainly because it was still very much 90s esthetic 😂😂😂 Also. "Pardon my past" is my top 3 favorite episodes, along with the one where they travel back in time to help deliver Melinda.
Sorry! My preferred area are the years with Prue Hallowell. Everything after that, didn't make any sense at all. I was not a fan of the seasons with page. I also was not fan of page. They never should have killed-off prue. They should have just kept her around.
I can definitely complete agree with you the Prue years was better and I wish they had a kept the show darker because season 1-4 was good and the best Prue years had better storylines as well they actually said in the season 4 plot Andy was supposed to come back and save Prue from crossing over and bringing him in as a Supernatural person like Leo I bet that would have been good
It was the greatest with Shannen in it. I started watching bc of her. I stayed bc of Holly. I cried when it ended. It’s a shame & unjust she was fired. And still very sad she’s gone now. But the show’s legacy will live on.
Shannen and Alyssa were THE professional actors in the show. It's sad how both of them have been tarnished by their cast mates for no other reason but politics and in Rose's case bitterness and jealousy. Both are incredible actors who really carried the whole series. Paige and Piper have their moments but especially Piper's character was getting tired. Her response would almost always start with "Well, you know honey..(insert some whiny, judgemental moral advice here)". By the last season I had "Well, honey / Well, you know honey" line burned in my brain and started laughing every single episode when she said it. I just can't use that sentence anymore without hearing her condescending voice.
I agree! Rose is insane in real life. She’s 50 dating a girl half her age lmao. Pipers character was my least favorite out of all the girls because of all her constant whining. Alyssa said she gained some weight in season 3 and the network asked her to loose it yet Holly was much bigger than her the entire run of the series from beginning to end. I love the Prue years plus it was the 90s. After Cole left the show became boring.
awww part 2 is gone 😒 AMAZING video!! I like to think my series is as satisfying as a BIPOC Charmed would be. And until the fandom spreads, I figured your videos will help me determine. So far everyone loves ELD! If part two to this video comes back, let me know?!
So glad I found your page. It’s making me want to go back to Charmed and rewatch. Is there any chance the part 2 video will be uploaded? I hate that I didn’t discover this page in enough time to watch part 2.
I'd love it if you did a video on the real life wiccan aspects used in the show. I'm wiccan myself and have always loved how real objects and concepts from the craft were woven together with the fantasy aspects.
I agree that Prue felt inconsistent. Shame that more people cant' see it. Like for example in season 3 out of nowewhere she knew martial arts or developed levitation/flying at some points (all tho this power would make for her much more sense than astral projection). For me ir felt like they were trying to make her some super witch with Piper and Phoebe as side characters. Their dynanamic changed when they introduced Paige. All tho then sometimes they were falling into the same trap with Piper, with Phoebe and Paige being in the background.
That part I do agree with. Although, I saw that she was a bit more developed from the beginning of Season 1 to the end of it. Also, from the end of Season 3 from the beginning. Prue was not handled all that well in Season 2. Season 2 was my least favorable season from the Prue years. Piper wasn't utilized much in Season 1. Season 2, you can start to see the growth in her character. Although, I don't know how I feel about the triangle that she was in. I think that they could have done more with her. Phoebe was probably at her best in Season 2. I think that she had more standalone episodes than the other sisters did.
I kinda teared up a little watching this, i love Prue so much. I think the reason why its cause i'm the youngest of 2 sisters so i saw myself in Phoebe and my eldest sister wasnt great so i think i wanted an eldest sister like Prue and therefore idolised her but damn no matter what Prue will always be my fav and i love Shannen.
Is part 2 of the analysis missing? I just discovered your channel but can't find it anywhere and was really looking forward for the rest; this is really, really well made
@@BetterWithBob oh man.. too bad, this first part is very insighful and interesting. I hope i get to watching the rest later somehow, i'll keep binging the rest of your videos in the meantime hehe Keep up the good work man
Prue has always been so layered right from the jump, maybe it's because she reminds me of my big sister (someone i've always looked up to) but it was always clear how much responsibility weighed on her, it was really great to watch her arc
My problem with Charmed is how unbearable Piper & Phoebe became after Season 4 when it came to being the Charmed Ones. They acted liked they were trapped being Charmed....even though they got a get out jail free card. And don't even get me started on Phoebe's B.S. reasons for hating Cole in Season 5 and how she blamed him for EVERYTHING
I don't re-watch season 5 and the latter half of season 4 because I still blame Phoebe for Cole becoming the Source and his ultimate fate. The 1st 3 seasons with Prue are my favorites, but I loved anytime we got to see Chris and Wyatt.
Could we have a re-upload of part 2? Even somewhere else? I really appreciated this first part and other videos as well. 👀 Though you list the exact reasons why Prue was and still is my favourite charmed one.
Plus also your distaste for Prudence probably just comes from a lack of relation to the character. There are many of us who did relate to her and appreciated her growth and her flaws from the beginning. But to each his own. I think Prudence was inconvenient. Where you wanted someone who was more free and kind, you got someone who was more rigid and worried -- honestly bothered by stupidity. But she developed beautifully. Ah the curse of the older sibling. You literally won't appreciate us till we're gone. How else would you have written the character of Prue, keeping in mind that Phoebe was a flight of fancy? If Prue was "the product of a focus group," Phoebe was only her antithesis, and Piper a convenient buffer.
so crazy that i’m rewatching the series now and just finished episode 2x18 ‘Chick Flick’. then to come to your page and see that the thumbnail is from that exact episode 😂🔥
This show was the only show I was given space and control of the television to watch when it was premiering episodes the last two seasons. Clicking right on to part 2
Honestly, prue was way to "right" most of the time. In every conflict she had with her sisters it turned out she was right all along, even if the others reasoning might have been better. I kinda liked the more equal balance of the later seasons better...
@@alcatelpixie9431 well yeah, but that's actually an another issue: she was overpowered, especially compared to early seasons phoebe... And that was a writers choice. I mean: strongest power, best at her job, learned hand to hand easily, great at potions and spells..
Shannon is why Pru grew. Good director, gotta say. I liked her from the start as her flaws were right on the surface, but the depth along the way made a big difference. Morality Bites is my favorite episode but I get what you mean about season 2, even if there were later seasons I had more issues with. Excellent series and while they tried and not hard I might add, it could never be replaced.
Season 3 is the best! Every episode had its own unique identity and storyline but almost all of them mattered in the long run. That's what would become the norm for Charmed for its best seasons and what I think the reboot should have done. Maybe the traditionnal "freak of the week" formula isn't considered trendy nowadays, but, when coupled with nice multi-episodes arcs, it's still my favorite format for a show. You always have something happening in your episode and yet it always matters in episodes to come.
In the begining (my teenage to my young adult years) i preferred seasons 4-8 but over the last 5 years or so, analyzing why prue could be such a prude (and experiencing being the older sibling) ive gaine such a dtrong resprct and liking to her, she was stern but passionate, nut was still so conflicted by standards, which she slowly started to overcome throughout season 2. I love Shannon Doherty's Prue, one of ky favorite tv show characters to date
THIS. This is exactly why she resonates with me. I'm an only child and was totally a Prue!
I mean I'm a shameless fantasy geek so no real complaints here lol.
They tried to be more accurate in the beginning but had tons of complaints about it not being accurate enough. I guess they gave up trying and just put their own twist on it.
Yesss!! I hated the fantasy stuff with the elves and bullshit
I really enjoyed season 6 too, but that's probably because I'm a sucker for time-travel plot lines.
Genius!
@@KevenTalks omg that's genius
Yeah pure was definitely a well rounded character indeed she's still my favorite 🌟
@@angelaholmes8888 mines too
All facts!
Who knows what Charmed could have been if Constance stayed?
why did Constance leave? when did they leave?
Prue is my favorite always will be. Any complex woman will relate to her.
Yes pure is my favorite of the sisters 🥰😊
Yeah she's the best, the show needed her
Agreed
It is insulting for a 'man' to yap his trap about a female character at all. What does this nurf know about the character Prue and the actress Shannon. Prue is STILL a LOT of female viewers FAVORITE character in charmed. Who cares what you think prick!!

She was the most powerful sister, she always knew what to do and she was willing to protect her younger sisters at all cost.
Season 1 - 3 were the best.
I know Shannen wanted to leave eventually but man i wish she stayed for one season, season 4 would've been a perfect finale for Prue and they could of slowly introduced Paige

Sorry for your loss
@@TCt83067695 I appreciate the condolences. That was well over 20 years ago so it's easier now.
Prue era was the best for me, I really loved the chemistry and the dynamic between the three sisters. My favorite was always Piper.
@@tomahilaire3921 Probably cause the writers didn't think of Piper having that power yet. We also didn't see Future Prue astral project either.

When did Constance leave?
@@mahfuzurchowdhury2765 Constance departed before the start of the third season. She was essentially pushed out of her own project. Brad Kern gradually assumed control, eventually reducing Constance to just a producer. Kern aimed to steer the show in a new direction, while Constance preferred to keep the spotlight on the sisters and their bond, rather than romantic entanglements. Kern ultimately dismantled the core of the show in the subsequent seasons.
@@MermaidMusings7 damn that's sad. Also explains a lot more skin on the girls too
As a fan of prue and the prue years more so, i can understand some of the confused attitudes. Sometimes she was very cautious and then very assertive and then funny and easy going all a sudden, and looking back its like you cant predict what prue you are going to have. But i love prue for her presence she commands and she does great. Prue years are more compelling because it feels grounded a little more in some reality
Yeah the early seasons are definitely the best 💯

I respect your opinion but Prue was the reason I love Charmed. Seasons 1-3 are the best.
I disagree that the show was the best because of Prue. While she was also my favorite, the reason why the later seasons sucked for me is simply because it got more childish and lame with all the weak plot episodes like with the fairies, the one where they became super heroes, but most of all, that ridiculous concept of a magic school.

Really enjoyed your take on it!
Agreed, for a long time I preferred Paige, but after rewatching recently, I actually think the first three seasons are the best.
Yeah the prue era was definitely the best I did enjoy season 4 though
Exactly
I was 7 when it started. I grew up watching it, and many say the new version is about independent women.... are you kidding me? I'm from Brazil, back then it was all about marrying a good man and being a good wife. 3 women living alone, independent, trying to grow and conquer their dreams without losing emotion, love... this show was amazing. At first it was about the story of witches and their powers... after the first few episodes it's not just about that completely
Very well said. Holly Marie Combs even called out the bad marketing in perfect fashion.
As much as I liked seasons 4-8, some of the best character-centric episodes were in seasons 1-3:
Prue: All Hell Breaks Loose
Piper: Awakened
Phoebe: Morality Bites
Not only are the story good, but also the moral stories of each episodes was just top notch!
@@BetterWithBob I respect your opinions regarding Prue, although I don't completely agree with everything. I hope to not sound like a mud slinger.
The Prudence years were definitely the best... the show just wasn't the same without her. damn Shannen Doherty! she always ruins a good thing.
And yet, it was only a good thing because of her lol
Didn’t Alyssa Milano recently come out and say that much of the drama on set with Shannen Doherty was actually perpetrated by her and apologised for it? I always thought it was telling that Shannen Doherty and Holly Marie Combs remained so close for years after Shannen Doherty left the show.
@@therealameliabedelia7821
Maybe.
@@kyrotv8156
Yeah, it's a shame! I really did enjoy the chemistry between the original three.
Gotta appreciate the fact that rose McGowan came into it season 4 and we learned to love her as her and not just Shannon’s replacement
I’m just now realizing “Prue” and “Phoebe” had like zero scenes together in that last episode 😂
Agreed
Charmed for me ended after Season 4. Everything thereafter was pure garbage. Prue of course was my favorite character. Being the eldest sibling myself I related very much to Prue. Having to be strong and assertive and protecting my younger siblings while at the same time battling my own inner demons. Charmed was such a great show during her Era and chemistry between all three actresses were electricity! After she died the relationship between Phoebe, Piper and Paige..to me...felt like three roommates living together.
There were plenty of great episodes after Season 4
Piper and Phoebe still had that typical sibling bond and most times with Paige but I liked that they kept Paige doing her own thing as she did all the years she did before she met them.
Thank you so much for the video! I can't imagine how much effort you put into making this video for us. I remember when I first watched Charmed with voiceover in my language, I was always so fixated on the three sisters and different monsters each episode. This is such a nostalgic video for me. Thank you so much!
Well thank you for watching :) it was a labour of love :)
Yeah me too I think if constance had remain during the later seasons the show would had continued focusing on the sisters and female empowerment
ngl at the beginning I didn't really like Paige, and being very pro-Cole/Phoebe, to the point where I was rooting for the Source (Cole) against her. After Cole left, and once the shadow of Prue's greatness wasn't so overbearing, I started to like Paige a bit more.
I'm a Paige fan and even I was rooting against her in that part lol.
i’m glad i’m not the only one who was rooting for cole 😂😂
@@BetterWithBob but why tho Cole is evil always will be his destiny was to defeat nothing can save him and Paige was right she was just looking out for her sister y'all got weird taste in men and Romance.

I think Charmed was the best show ever! I loved both Prue and Page’s era! I have watched the whole thing so many times that I know all the words! It was just a fabulous show!
I pretty much know it off by heart too
This show was everything. I absolutely loved Charmed especially the Prue years.
I love charmed especially the first 3 seasons with prue ❤️❤️
It's probably one of the most successful situations of swapping one main character out for another
Thank you so much for your love of Charmed and for the work you put in to honoring our favourite series
Aw thank you so much for watching and commenting :)

I love Astral Monkey and Awakening too, the episode with the baby and the ghost, and this one with Cleavant Derricks. I like with Krypto too.
Your charmed reviews are my favorite videos, always such good videos. I enjoy your viewpoint.
Charmed is like Beverly Hills 90210, Its better with Shannon Dorthey.
And when i say its like Beverly Hills 90210 i obviously don`t mean its the same type of show. Because you know its not.
tbf they sure as hell made Shannen look as she had in 90210 in the Season 2 finale ;)
My favorite show of all time. And yes. I'm a Prue Era fan for sure, but mainly because it was still very much 90s esthetic 😂😂😂
Also.

I can definitely complete agree with you the Prue years was better and I wish they had a kept the show darker because season 1-4 was good and the best Prue years had better storylines as well they actually said in the season 4 plot Andy was supposed to come back and save Prue from crossing over and bringing him in as a Supernatural person like Leo I bet that would have been good
Prue was my favorite sister❤ (Paige is actually my 2nd favorite!).
I still love Charmed '98, even with its flaws - especially from the last seasons.
I love Prue, but your summation of her character was 1000% spot on!
awww part 2 is gone 😒
AMAZING video!!
Charmed was at it's best in the first 3 seasons. Shannon Daughty made this show great.
You went hard on the comedy editing for this one 🤣 RIP Dan’s niece.
Ah she didn't die, she just moved back with her parents
at least that's what Dan claims...
The Prue era were the best seasons. After that, it was just... Like something missing.
Great video! Charmed was my favourite show from my childhood. I watch it through once every couple years because I love it so much.

Loved it ; each sister was individually wonderful an together they were unstoppable
Prue has always been so layered right from the jump, maybe it's because she reminds me of my big sister (someone i've always looked up to) but it was always clear how much responsibility weighed on her, it was really great to watch her arc
Prue is and will always be my favorite character on charmed
I really, throughly enjoyed Chick Flick from season 2! Haha nice that you touched on that 😊❤️
This was perfection. Perfect balance ⚖️ among the threee sisters. Later they focused too much in Phoebe, I didnt find so interesting

This is the content I get on TH-cam for. 🙌🏾
Honestly, prue was way to "right" most of the time. In every conflict she had with her sisters it turned out she was right all along, even if the others reasoning might have been better. I kinda liked the more equal balance of the later seasons better...
Most of the time she was right Phoebe and Piper needed her to protect them.
@@alcatelpixie9431 well yeah, but that's actually an another issue: she was overpowered, especially compared to early seasons phoebe...
And that was a writers choice.
I mean: strongest power, best at her job, learned hand to hand easily, great at potions and spells..
The Prue years were the best
Shannon is why Pru grew. Good director, gotta say. I liked her from the start as her flaws were right on the surface, but the depth along the way made a big difference. Morality Bites is my favorite episode but I get what you mean about season 2, even if there were later seasons I had more issues with. Excellent series and while they tried and not hard I might add, it could never be replaced.
I liked the Prue years the best and I am 100% sure that they would have continued to flesh her out if she was able to stay on past season 3.
I'm sorry but the fairy tale themed episode had nothing to add other than being the start of making the show horribly childish.
Killing pure off is when the show really jumped the shark
