    The thing about the "weird terraforming" along the river on Islands is that it's perfect for those who want to build the hydroelectric dam and have it generate the maximum power output. You don't need landscaping tools or mods to achieve this, so it's great for those playing vanilla/console. Worth mentioning, I think, given the attractiveness of a build with a well-functioning dam, especially to new players.

    • @OVERCHARGEDEGG

      That is true! Good spots of Dams

    • @larrylindgren9484
      @larrylindgren9484 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I don't think any of it would make a dam work. Not steep enough. Sadly, the way they designed dams they are pretty much worthless. They should always work. Dam holds back water as it builds up. Then it starts working. Of course, there should be better spots. But they should always somewhat work. In Cities they almost never will on any map. Very poor game design for what some be something fun to build. Kind of like transit. 75% of the options are totally workless.

    • @doom-generation4109
      @doom-generation4109 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@larrylindgren9484 Well, it does make a dam work, to 100% of its power output, no less. I have literally done this myself on that map, so I'm not just making a guess here.

      @@larrylindgren9484 I managed to power the entire city with two dams on the _Islands_ map. The problem is that it causes flooding upriver, so you better build the dams before building anything up there.

    I feel like it's worth mentioning that the vanilla maps are loosely based on real world locations for those that are looking for a little inspiration on what and how to build. Some are a little more exact than others. They were never meant to be perfect replicas, but you 'could' make them more exact with a little terraforming and ripping out most/all of the roads and rail. =]
    Black Woods - Stockholm
    Cliffside Bay - Marseille
    Diamond Coast - Hong Kong
    Foggy Hills - Quebec (and to the Northeast)
    Grand River - Cairo
    Green Plains - Washington DC
    Islands - Venice
    Lagoon Shore - Southern Greece (Athens ish)
    River Run - Mississippi River just north of St. Louis where the Missouri River joins.

    I built my favourite city on the lowest-rated map, the only one which got a C! (Cliffside Bay). I took the map as a challenge and decided to terraform heavily, build massive canals, add a huge stream of water in the corner and a fortress-city on top of one of the hills.

    I've spent about 400 hours on Grand River building my first city, which is still my biggest and best by far. The map is fairly lame overall, but the river itself is cool and I do love the old artifacts and things. I built a huge tourist district around the old mill, and I look forward to developing the Hatfield and McCoy Memorial Parks around those old fortifications.
    But man, that river has a mind of its own. The water level can vary by 10 meters. One side of my waterfront has a big sea wall but the other, older side just has to deal with some occasional flooding.

    Islands is my favorite map (especially if you run it with the Boreal set). I had a very east time getting high population in Riverrun as well.
    My absolute favorite map was not a vanilla map but came with one of the expansions... it was called "Honu Island".
    Nowadays I mostly play in "Islands" and modded maps I get on the workshop.
    That said, it really is too bad we never got "Cities Skylines: Seasons" as a DLC. It would have added an extra dimension with which type of map you play.

    I remember having problems with flooding on some of those river maps. For some reason I thought the water tower was a storage device, so only used the river water for drinking and dumping sewage into. It really messed with the water flow and levels later in the game.
    That being said, one of the maps (possibly early DLC) had a giant wave that would travel along it's river! It happened at regular intervals, right from the start and without any interference.

    Islands is the first map I played and the most nostalgic for me. I have yet to recreate the magic and character of my first city. I feel like the first time you play C:S you don’t have a good grasp of how far the city will sprawl, so development tends to be unplanned and makes a very natural looking city. Islands was home to Angusopolis, population 320,000 on 9 tiles. Still my magnum opus!

    I really like Cliffside Bay actually, even as a "vanilla player", but I kind of like farming industry as well. Expanding public transport was kind of fun, and fit well with expanding into ore industry up in the hill on kind of the outskirts of the city, which kind of just felt right in a way.
    Expanding the city into the bay was cool as well, and turning it into a kind of tourist area.
    Don't like sand for some reason, but Sandy Beach looks like a nice map that I'd want to try out ASAP.

    You can see they really didn't know much back when some of the maps were made. Just draw a road over the lumps. Train tracks they wouldn't work at all. Makes you go even more wow at some of the maps people make. You are right you are blowing up almost every road on a base game map from this time frame. But if you look back it looked like everyone else's roads back in the day. Move It is a mod that was such a must have mod. You could fix a lot of it without having to rip everything out at a cost.

    Of all the base game maps that I've played, and I have played them all, Green Plains is my favorite. I find it the easiest one to create a very, very large city (I got over 200k cims on this map). Yes, the intersections stink. The rail intersection stinks even more. But once you've got to a certain point, making lots of money, it's easy enough to fix those up. I also like how the highway circles the middle of the map. It makes it very easy to create highway intersections at "just" the right spots so cims can easily get on and off but not have so many that it makes the city look ugly. Building around the lake gives you lots and lots of high-priced districts and with the river system, you can setup a ferry system if you so desire. This was also the very first map I ever used in C:S.

    I'm currently building on Diamond Coast (console) and while I agree it is a very nice map, it is not super friendly to a 9-tile build. The rail line runs through the northernmost tiles while the coast is on the southern side, and the ore reserves are in the mountains to the east and west. The shipping lane is accessible from the bay, but playing Diamond Coast and not actually reaching the coast is rather disappointing.

    (commenting before watching) - I can't wait to argue this one, LOL
    The one big thing not discussed, and IMO is worth changing ratings on some of these maps for, is that when you play the 9-tile game, not all maps will allow you to have rail AND water connections (or possibly not be able to use all 4 natural resources or a combo of both connections and resources), unless you build some sort of weird unlock shape like snake or something, and I generally feel that would look terrible and most people wouldn't do that. They would build either a square or rectangle, or perhaps a mostly square w/ an offshoot, etc. Perhaps a follow rating for "best maps to play if you want to do X, where X is industry or campus forcused, or big city or small towns, etc
    Cliffside is a crap map, don't kid yourself
    Diamond Coast is a A / B at best
    Islands - while I understand your "high banks" concern - this is THE map to set a dam up on, and if you do so, those banks will (pending where you put it) fill up and not be so obnoxious
    River Run - you put it in B, but at the end you mention it being a C tier, LMFAO
    Best quote: "This looks like someone has just figured out how to use the elevation step tool and has gone ham..."

    As always an awesome vid. As a console player I find it very disappointing when maps don't include rail. This always impacts which map I select, in serious thoughts what city doesn't have rail! Also I feel the developers think the cims are stupid; they can build concrete roads but can't do walkways until much later & we're all aware a very important beneficial aspect. As everything in games there's good & bad we just gotta keep doing what we can, happy future building Mr Mayor Egg.

    I have to correct you on that last map. That was the first ever map I played with and it DOES have ship connections, via the river. I know this because I HAD both passenger and freight ports with both cruise ships and freighters coming and going via the Northern part of the river, going as far as the big lake in the middle. Beyond the lake, the rivers become unnavigable and you can't get any sea connections upstream from the lake, but you can up until the lake.

      Interesting, I've just gone back to check this after your comment but Two Rivers has no sea connection. Are you sure its the same map? Maybe you had had mods on? Currently looking at Two Rivers and no way to connect a sea route along any of the water channels :)

    Regarding the vanilla infrastructure, I'm guessing the way you'd fix it is to make the train intersections at least 1 train length long to prevent queueing trains blocking the other lines? And cloverleaf intersections should be replaced by stacks?

    • @OVERCHARGEDEGG
      @OVERCHARGEDEGG  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely longer spacing between each of the train junctions is a must. And basically anything other than a cloverleaf, a stack would work 🙂

    • @GabeSyme
      @GabeSyme 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OVERCHARGEDEGG adding grade separation to the train interchanges would also be good (flying junctions) if maybe overkill for all but the busiest of junctions, though cargo traffic can get pretty intense so it's probably worthwhile.

  • @williamhuang8309
    @williamhuang8309 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Cliffside bay is... okay. You can build a massive city with it (mine's at 350K), but you'll struggle to bring the highways and railways up the steep slopes. I've built on this map before, and all infrastructure in general has very steep slopes. However, the mountains make for an excellent place to build rural villages. The highways are sandwiched between mountains, making it difficult to access outside of the flat starting area. Train infrastructure is simple- there are NO intersections. The rail line is not accessible in the starting tile. Nice map for a challenge, but it may be difficult for beginner players. definitely not a problem for intermediate or expert players though. I'd put it in the B tier, as it's an interesting map with a mix of all types of terrain.
