He also said, 'Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem. Christians believed that Canaan had settled in Africa and that his descendents had become black.
Let me clarify my previous comment: it was a BAD time for Black people in the 1930s through the 1950s (when the Nation of Islam came into popularity) in this country. Read Malcolm X's autobiography. The Nation of Islam saved him and many black men of his generation from a life of crime and drugs. Consider the conditions in which they (some of whom are still alive) were living at the time, etc.

While it's true that once Africans arrived in the New World, their mortality rate was around 10%, the death rate associated with capture, detainment and transportation was far higher. When combined with the 10% you mention, the overall mortality rate caused by the trans-Atlantic slave trade was at minimum 50%.
