  • "Chernobyl," a five-part miniseries co-production from HBO and Sky, dramatizes the story of the 1986 nuclear accident, one of the worst man-made catastrophes in history - and of the sacrifices made to save Europe from unimaginable disaster. Jared Harris portrays Valery Legasov, a leading Soviet nuclear physicist. As part of the response team, he was one of the first to grasp the scope of the unparalleled disaster that occurred.

    The Chernobyl miniseries could easily be classified as horror and it just proves how reality is often the most frightening thing of them all.

      Reality is a horror movie where people’s skin melted from their body from radiation, a horror movie where soldiers were killed in mass fighting a hopeless war, a horror movie where 6 million people were killed for no good reason, and a horror movie where men make weapons that can level cities.

      That is so spot on! I could never agree more! I've always been critical of how people consider supernatural stories as horror when there's a ton of real things that can happen and be ten times more horrifying! Such as Chernobyl!

    Remember those names - the first firefighters who arrived at the scene of the explosion and started combating the fire:
    Vladimir Pravik - died May 11, 1986
    Victor Kibenok - died May 11, 1986
    Leonid Telyatnikov - lived longest among these firemen, which is a miracle in itself. Died in 2005 of Chernobyl-related cancer.
    Vasiliy Ignatenko - died May 13, 1986. In 2006 posthumously awarded the title Hero of Ukraine.
    Nikolay Vaschuk - was instrumental in preventing fire from reaching reactor number 3. Died with the rest of his crew on the same day. Hero of Ukraine.
    Nikolay Titenok - died May 16, 1986. Hero of Ukraine
    Leonid Shavrey - miraculous recovery in the facility in Kyiv. Had bone marrow partially replaced which help the organism and DNA to fight off radiation exposure and sickness.
    Ivan Shavrey - the younger brother of Leonid. Also survived by miraculous treatment in Kyiv. Again, partial replacement of bone marrow.
    Petro Shavrey - the oldest brother. Also survived. There should be a book about this family of heroes or maybe a separate HBO movie.
    Alexander Lelechenko - electrician technician of Chernobyl NPP. Was responsible for preventing an additional hydrоgen explosion. Received lethal dose of radiation and died on May 7, 1986. Hero of Ukraine.
    Valery Khodemchuk - pump room engineer. Died immediately with the reactor explosion. His body is forever entombed under reactor number 4.
    The first wave of firefighters consisted of 28 men in total.

    Clever storytelling, well put together, remarkable acting...I am from Hungary, and was a child in 1986, I remember some of the things from that era. The eastern block was more or less the same. The furnitures, the faces, the whole atmosphere is 100% authentic. Despite the fact this was the Best show I have ever seen, there was some amount of quite significant facts that were untrue. Legasov DID tell the truth at IAEA conference. He had prepared the report very accurately, and his daughter confirmed it. He didn't kill himself because of bad KGB. There had been a significant amount of pressure on him from academic circles, they were trying to accuse him and diminish his exploit. Also, he had depression and was feeling worse and worse due to illness caused by radiation. Also, he didnt conceal that he was recording the tapes, everyone in Kurchatov institute knew about him doing that.
    There was no dramatic court truth revelation in real life. However, the sequence he retold in the series was brilliant. There were several other inaccuracies in the series, but those aforementioned were the most important.

  • @LeeMaitland

    I really hope this series leads to more, that are based on real situations and for the most part, factually correct. Many people are able to describe how a nuclear power plant works now because of this series and that's mind boggling, maybe there is a hunger for something that isn't super heroes or dragons. Some situations in history don't require you to add drama, they're dramatic enough.

    One might say it was fortunate that the accident occurred in Soviet Union. I'm not saying that it was disregard for human life, tho Soviets were known of that too, but the willingness to sacrifice people for greater good was quite prominent in Soviet Union. That may have been one thing that contributed to managing the crisis with efficiency that might not have been possible in some other nations.

    • @hyennussquatch4597
      @hyennussquatch4597 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is exactly what i was thinking. If i imagine the same accident in western countries... it would be almost impossible to deal with it... what would they do?? The technology has to be bullet-proof otherwise we´re fucked.

    • @barboragimesova4587
      @barboragimesova4587 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, on the one hand you are right about the disregard for lifes, but I would argue the efficiency of the managing the crisis, they didn't evacuate the Pripyat immediately, but after 36 hours, they let kids drink milk and etc. They didn't have functional dosimeters,at least some kind of safety for the liquidator. The main officers didn't want to know professional opinion, just wanted to hear everything is going to be okay. Other countries in USSR did not know (didn't want to know) about the seriousness of the accident, for example in CzechoSlovakia state officials let their citizens to go on (mandatory) 1st May parade that was outside in every city and town, so it would look like nothing happened. It was in the news, but there was not single information about the protection of people. They didn't tell them to not go out out while the radioactive ash was in the air or while it was raining.
      So the efficiency could be a lot better, but again it just shows USSR care for lives as you said.

    • @hyennussquatch4597
      @hyennussquatch4597 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@barboragimesova4587 Yes you are right. On the other hand when we look to 1950s and the atmospheric atomic bombs testing in USA and USSR - this has much more radioactive fall out than Chernobyl. In 1962 at the peak of tests the fall out was much higher in Czechoslovakia (and quite everywhere else) than during Chernobyl accident. In USA the regions of Nevada was an atomic wasteland. People used to watch A Bombs explosions with whole families sitting outside their houses in Las Vegas... There were also so called U.S. Atomic soldiers - a really sad part of man´s history. In USA they start to talk about it, in Russia they will never ever have any chance to be heard.
