    Believing and understanding are different words for a reason. Watching two honest believers trying to understand what they believe is something humanity is currently in short supply of. I'm encouraged and hopeful this will spread.

      You know ... the most common cause for a metaphysical change in belief is dysregulation of activity in high-level cortex and compression of the brain’s hierarchical organization; essentially breaking down discrete brain functions into unified consciousness; a function of synaptic growth via 5-HT2AR agonism that is most heavily expressed during infancy during cortical growth; experienced meditators and classes of pharmacological intervention can also cause this.
      While the limbic system keeps everything working together, the different "functions" of your brain are essentially isolated, discrete things. 5-HT2AR is largely responsible for cortical growth in infants and children; creating synaptic plasticity that ... left unchecked, would result in a sort of "transcended consciousness" state where people's brains are working together.
      For reasons yet unknown, some peoples' brains stop developing sooner than others, limiting their consciousness experience. Everyone is human, but there is a REASON that every human is unique. Adults can increase related synaptic plasticity with meditation, breathing exercises, pharmacological intervention, or an NDE - all of which have massive empirical bodies of evidence indicative of a metaphysical change in belief structure.
      All you have to do to solicit proof of God is to ...science - bypassing limited cortical expansion and pre-emptively segregated neural activity into uncommunicative, discrete functions.
      Put another way....some people are going to be pre-dispositioned into belief in a higher power due to enhanced cognitive capabilities. Other people are going to have a metaphysical belief shift based on life experience (which is brain chemistry again). Some people are never going to experience these things. Faith is ... I really want to say irrelevant. Realistically, faith is best expressed as a word or tool for those with arrested neural receptor development, or those with either no access to data, or without the intellectual curiosity to investigate available datasets or to utilize the scientific method to gain comfort.

Narrative as a construct is absolutely amazing and it's one of the most important core topics that Jordan talks about. It's at least half of why I listen to him and all I can say is Merry Christmas! "He doesn't make a good protagonist, he doesn't grow or change in any way"
    I've heard it theorized that there are two types of protagonist -- one that grows and changes, and one that is the hinge, the fixed point, that the entire story revolves around.
    I heard that theorized in a commentary about Captain America, of all places, but if you need something more highbrow you can point to Myshkin in _The Idiot_ as well. He's the catalyst that vivifies everyone he meets.

    Watched Homestead over the weekend. It was pretty good for the most part. We then watched the follow up episode. It is a little disappointing how much "girl bossing" goes on. So far, most of the men are consistently wrong and are being corrected by the women who are always right. While men are not always right, by any means, the perpetuation of this trend is not something I'm pleased with. I'll likely not continue the series.

    • @jum5238
      @jum5238 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I watched this as well. I didn't pick up on the girl bossing as much, but it was there in different ways... and for different purposes One was the absence of the leader (killed off?) and the wife trying to hold it together as a now-presumptive leader seeking help in areas she's weak in (a good leader), and the psychologist intellectually combatting religiosity, and then being humbled by the death of her husband. The film was good because of a clash of viewpoints and trust (one is a belief in God, the other is a belief in self - with paranoia against everyone). I REALLY appreciate that overall the movie touches on being more self-sufficient and the conflict over saving oneself only vs helping others with limited resources. The series does so as well, and there are other videos on the homestead site that teaches you how to can, for instance. I don't watch TV, and the series honestly drains me with all the scheming and backstabbing - agendas by various people. When people are hungry, it's hard to see how they'll react - and the movie and series reflects that pretty well.

      They make these so kids can watch them too. The idea of Jesus being hung on a cross to slowly die is enough. Why does it need to be overly bloody or R-rated. Good story telling doesn’t need to explain and show every detail. It simply needs to give you enough context so that you can fill in the details with your mind.

The Queen of England was a baptised born again Christian and king Charles is defender of the faiths. A contradiction of backing yourself into a corner of contradiction! In my cathedral we now have multi faithful by the law and not God's law . Why we are not encouraged to take our bible to service so you can't question what is said. No where in the Bible does it say God loves you unconditionally there's always a condition. Only through me will you have salvation,.. condition. We are in the time of harlot church life and God will deal with that. it's not a pick and mix book of scripture . The elders are putting us into blasphemy. To the one comparing the Chosen to Hallmark:
    No way is this series "Hallmark" level. That's like comparing a creme puff to prime rib. This is a deeply moving series that deals with heart issues, and we're not talking about fluffy, feel-good, unrealistic, romantic relationship scenarios that make up most Hallmark plots.
    Did you watch how Eden and Simon's relationship evolved throughout the series so far...the miscarriage and how assumptions were made regarding each other; expectations of how Simon should have been more sensitive toward Eden, and how Simon was extremely frustrated at Eden's refusal to show him love and communicate her feelings to him? Then, both of them dealing with their pain and resentment towards Jesus for not saving the baby?
    Did you watch how torn to shreds Thomas was after the murder of Ramah, dealing with anger and utter despair, also seething with anger and resentment toward Jesus for not raising Ramah from the dead?
    This is far from Hallmark, my friend. It has been nothing but stellar so far. They are even doing a remarkable job with Judas' character, showing the progression of a man with an authentic hunger for the Messiah and His mission, to a man who chooses to lean on his own understanding of what that mission should look like, and this will eventually turn his heart to stone and betrayal.
    To portray what I just described and all that I haven't is a work of art, painted by the Holy Spirit.
    The one thing that I am hoping they will do is stay true to Scripture regarding the treatment of Jesus before His death. The Bible states that He was beaten beyond human recognition. That would be deeply disturbing to see portrayed, but that is exactly what should be portrayed to allow the truth and reality of what happened cut to the heart of every soul who watches, showing what Jesus really went through when He died for humanity. From the nicest person, like Mother Teresa to the most heinesous criminal, such as Hitler. He did this with no guarantee that they would love Him back.
    To grasp this, just imagine Hitler being caught and brought before a judge to pay for murdering the millions that he did, then Jesus steps up and says, "I have already paid for Adolf's crimes. He just needs to accept the payment. The judge turns to Hitler and asks, "Do you accept Jesus' payment? If so, you can go free. Hitler then stands at full height, squares his shoulders, turns to Jesus, and spits in his face, saying, "No, I would rather die."
    What? That's insanity to refuse such an offer. But we all have free will to decide our eternal fate.
    The key is this: God so loved the world (which means he saw each person's value, as we were made in His image and He knew what we could be once we were cleansed from sin) that He gave His one and only Son, that we would not perish, but have everlasting life." Amazing love, how can it be, that Thou, my God should die for me." That is the depth of the love of Christ and of the Chosen. Hallmark isn't even in the same league.

    I wonder if Jordan is missing the simplicity of the story telling by trying to over analyze WHY story telling is effective.. I appreciate hearing Dallas' "outside the box" thinking that helps provide a plausible story. The fact that in a few verses the thief changes is an important one to highlight and the "WHY" is good, but not in the Jordan Peterson way shown here. It's heart, not philosophical or using sophistry. The thief knowing he will die as well, and possibly not having anything useful to hang upon (not speaking of the cross, but perhaps the absence of any knowledge or belief in an afterlife, or a savior), other than seeing the pure love Christ has for these people who are persecuting him. How can someone NOT be converted? And it's worth exploring the worth of souls here.

      So, as an atheist and a, how shall I say, cynic for the purpose of devil's advocacy, I will argue that people cry and wail over plenty of things. People can be absolutely crazy and their hearts can bleed for any cause at all. And even to further be a fly in the ointment, those who stand for nothing will fall for anything. When you have had nothing that appears right in your entire life and then you see someone acting as you see they should, it can be compelling, but that does not mean that you have made any meaningful change. Effectively, absent the imminent nature of their deaths, there is no reason to believe they are anything more than the Seed falling on the Rocky Ground, a passing moment of jubilation but nothing lasting. I love the idea of better storytelling for Christians, but, absent the mockery, you often need someone to help you critically assess the gospel. The propaganda aspect is to easy to fall into.

    “It’s a pretty bad story” referring to Holy Spirit-inspired Scripture. 😮
    Had the Holy Spirit thought it necessary for there to be a backstory to the thief on the cross’ experience He would have included it.
    By all means, use your story telling talent, but not to add to or subtract from Scripture.
    And as a professing Christian, to speak negatively about Jesus as in “Jesus is not a great protagonist” seems not only unbecoming but even dangerous.
    How can we dare criticize the inspired Word of God and claim we are better storytellers than He is? That the Holy Spirit just didn’t get it quite right?

    At 1:22 Dr. Peterson - your guest gave you some wrong information. He told you that the typical movie in the Bible Religious genre was word for word from the verses in the bible. That is absolutely not true and it is rare to find one that is like. (I prefer those.) The best one is Cecil B. DeMille's "The Ten Commandments" as far as accuracy goes in the storyline. So many other movies are dramatized, too much music added, and story and characters reshaped with conjecture all over the place. Recently, a guy was telling me that Nicodemus in the Bible is the one who exercised this evil spirits out of Mary Magdalene. I told him, "Nowhere in the Bible does it say that." He goes, "Well, it's in the movie." And I told him, you can't trust those movies. Actually, it was Jesus who helped M.M. that way. Smh. You gotta read it for yourself. The Bible was not made for entertainment and to be made a movie of. It is critical life and death information, not to be played with and as a matter of fact there's a curse for those who do (the Bible itself very clearly states). Plus, your gues told you that both thieves were insulting Christ while they were all lifted up. That is wrong. One Thief was insulting him but the other thief rebuked the one that was insulting Christ and then he turned to Christ and said Remember Me when you come into your kingdom. In Jesus answered and said truly I tell you today you will be with me in paradise. So the person you are speaking with is doing more harm than good good cases like this. The enemy always comes with some truth mixed with lies and chaos (abd re-telling with a twist of lie). As scripture says, we are not ignorant of his subtleties. (Read Acts 10:13 story of Paul & the false prophet & sorcerer & Jew named Barjesus. Also cross reference 2 Cor. 2:11 about not being ignorant of the schemes and tricks and subtlties of the devil and those he speaks thru.

      Bro, even in the chosen it was clear that Nicodemus did not exorcise any demon, your premise here is saying that the chosen portrayed Nicodemus as the "exorcist", but it made it clear as the narrative that Only Jesus and Only God could cast the demons out of Mary. Your friend just was confused or didn't pay attention to the show at all. The story wasn't in the Bible, but the lesson was clear, only Jesus (whom they clearly portray Jesus as God) could cast out the demons. The chosen enhances my Bible study, the show is definitely not negative, it is the individual who chooses what and what not to do.

      I've seen short stories portrayed on video that are word-for-word Jesus scriptures, and it's done because taking literary license elsewhere might be seen as misleading. For instance, videos done by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are word-for-word following the King James version (verbally) while visibly sharing some context.

    • @Telorchid
      @Telorchid 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I'm sure your faith is sincere, but you need to do a little more intertextual meditations on the Gospels. Only Luke describes one of the two thieves repenting. Matthew simply says both thieves hurled insults - that is a legitimate portrayal in the canonical sacred text. Mark and John do not mention the insults of the thieves at all, only that they were crucified. Each of these authors tend to have theological/textual reasonings for their editing decisions. Pondering the differences superficially reveals so-called contradictions, but in time will reveal treasures. While I disagree with some of the thinking of Mr. Jenkins here, there is a sense in which what he presents with something like the Chosen gets people to meditate more on the Scriptural texts, which is what we all should be doing. Is some of this entertaining? No doubt, just like Jesus's parables would have been to their original audience. But multiple things can happen at the same time.
      And as long as the filmmakers are not making any attempts to actually change the sacred texts, or affect translations, or change church doctrine, they are not under any curse. It seems they are transparent with the fact that they are presenting an expanded account of Jesus's life and ministry that fills in gaps while trying to be faithful to the basic narrative facts from the sacred texts.

    One thing I disagree that Mr Peterson said is if you ‘believe in evil then you know there is good because it’s the opposite of evil’. When you are in the grips of evil all there is, is tormenting darkness and a person questions ‘is there goodness, is there a God’. It’s a faith crises and why most lose faith in God’. Job started to doubt due to the overriding evil. Jesus stated ‘God why hast thou forsaken me’. That is exactly what evil/bad is like - the absence of light, goodness, morals and love; believing either God has abandon you or there is no goodness, love or God. And some die in that state. There can be good people that stare straight in the eyes of the abyss and are never the same.
    We cannot intellectualise God. As Jesus being God in flesh was a simple carpenter, but would have had knowledge and wisdom beyond primitive human comprehension. It is how we treat others, not in an eye for an eye or in hypocrisy which Christ tried to convey to the Pharisees; but in doing God’s will on earth through the adherence to the Commandments; it is in the keeping of God’s laws, in prayer…is proof of God’s wisdom and knowledge.
    Why people fall away from God is that most have fallen away from this moral simple way of life, fallen away from doing God’s will for self serving (evil)…and so much suffering and human misery results. Listen to what can comes out of the mouths of babes….yet to lose innocence…there you will find God’s wisdom.

  • @thebadmanrisesagain
    @thebadmanrisesagain วันที่ผ่านมา

    Yes. This is precisely the problem with Christian film making. Instead of it being creative and unique; they simply echo word for world almost exactly what is expected.
    Which, is a bit boring. If I wanted the same I can simply read the Bible in different translations. What he offered was a unique insiders perspective (through the eyes of the disciples and their lives) of what it COULD have been like walking with Jesus.
    I’m an aspiring actor myself, and content producer, and just so happen to be Christian. And I have 0 interest in simply recreating what others have already done. What’s the point?
    With all the huge budget, AI generated, and recooked copycat junk available. We have to ask, why does Hollywood suck. And why do Christian films tend to suck.
    Because they aren’t written well, they aren’t authentic, creative, and/or don’t have the budget to manifest an over the top high quality film.
    What Dallas did was unprecedented. He literally filmed the first episode on faith. And the rest is history. Someone else who watched passed it onto someone else who knew how to raise money for it. And now we have an entire 5+ season series.
    The lessons here are simple:
    1) Be unique
    2) Create high-quality content (regardless of budget)
    3) Step out in faith to make a difference
    He’s done all three. And now, many want to “come and see” what the hubub is all about.
    Years from now, people will be asking the same about others he has inspired in film and such (including me). And I’ll point them to Dallas Jenkins.
    Because it’s men like him who (among many) inspired me to step out on the waters of uncertainty and have faith.
    Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year. May God show you strength to be your own person, and to follow your dreams.
    - M

    I'm not sure who needs to hear this, but the chosen is not the answer to christian cinema. If you want to make a movie or show on the bible, it needs to be faithful to the bible 100 percent. No adding or leaving out. Otherwise its nonsense to me. Adding in dialog or things that didn't happen for regular stuff is different than for the bible. I think liberties that make sense can be taken for any other source material. For example the lord of the rings was adapted and it was good but people are still salty over arwen bringing frodo to rivendell instead of glorfindel.

    I reluctantly ceased my viewership of "The Chosen" upon realising that the portrayals within the series were increasingly becoming conflated with the biblical narratives themselves. This has prompted a continuous process of self-correction in my understanding. While the initial premise of the show was commendable, it ultimately exercises an excessive degree of artistic licence, which obscures the source material upon which it draws.
