I make my own version, that is like 1% of the cost of the ortlieb. Take one of those big shopping bags with handles (like from ikea), and put something stiff in the bottom (i use a cardboard box from a keyboard), put your stuff in it, roll the top over, and strap it to the rack sideways. The straps will hold it closed and make it 100% waterproof. When you get to your destination, unstrap it and walk off carrying it like a regular shopping bag.
What a very nice idea 🤗 I love diy also, one of the reasons we buy this bag is because the sturdiness of the bag, normally with bags I no mess around. I have many ideias for making my own bags, but missing me knowledge to sewing on machine😏. As I said on your teaser short for this video, I use a similar sized holdall occasionally. But I fit it on lengthways. I was surprised and not expecting this bag to fit across the rack instead. But I can see the advantages of it protecting the side panniers from rain? I don't own anything by Ortlieb but everything they make is top quality. Premium quality but also premium prices. Their warranty and support services are excellent too. If you are planning on touring the world, Ortlieb is the best you can get.
Like I said, have another brands on the market, some good options, and sometimes bad options, but Ortlieb it's almost forever. One curiosity for you all... the first pannier Ortlieb made, the fabric waterproof is nearly the same as the covers of the big lorries.
Hey Portoguese Guy, thank you very much for the video. I agree, the Ortlieb is not suitable for modern bikepacking. What I meant by hybrid solution is something different. The Rhinowalk bag I use is much smaller (20 litres) and is strapped to the rack long in the direction of riding (in line). This keeps the bike light, fast and manoeuvrable without having the packing issues by using a saddle bag. It is a bit like a tailfin aeropack for poor people
Now I understand what you meant 😅, the rhinowalk brand I know very well, on the past I have some bags from this brand. and on this moment I have one saddle bag 1l rhinowalk for put my tools, and I have it about 2 years and no have any issue. if I need recommend any bag from Amazon...I think the rhinowalk brand is a good value. Nice video. Personally I put one of the handles around the seattube, and use the shoulderstraps from the Panniers to fasten the rackpack.
