  • Mojotone's Tom Brantley shows us the basics of rewinding a pickup. In this tutorial Tom illustrates how to create a bobbin from scratch, and how to wind around the bobbin, specifically for a Burns Tri-sonic pickup. Links to products can be found below.

I don't know about anyone else here watching this really cool video, but if at all possible I'd like to learn more about the winding machine Tom Brantley used here; it is perhaps the best/fully featured ones I've seen that isn't overly technical in it's operation. Aside from that, I am absolutely delighted this video exists; the inner workings of a vintage Burns Tri-Sonic is a sight very rarely seen.

Beautiful work building the paper bobbin. That takes serious time to build a set.
And a steady hand. Im sure its worth it.

Hi thanks for asking! At the moment we do not have any tele pickup wind videos; however, we are going to be making a lot of instructional videos like this one so please keep checking in with us every now and then to see what we have added. Thanks again!

Rewind this is an art. I wanted to give a try making some pick ups. I thought even to build a wiring machine with a arduino, counting the turns, with a lcd and stepper motor. But I just don't have the time.

Excellent explanation, would have loved to have heard you play the guitar at the end so that we could listen to the results of your work. I also would have liked a bit of explanation on how the different wire gauge and number of turns influences the sound of a pickup by demonstrating through playing them.

Thanks so much! Please let us know if there are any other videos you might like to see in this manner. We will certainly do our best to create anything you need provided it is something we deal with here in our shop. Thanks again!

I want to build my own Tri-sonic pickup. What kind of Magnets are used in the TS? ANY info (specs) would help. Thanks.

I thought trisonics had one large ceramic bar magnet, but these looked to have pole pieces like a strat pickup?

I find it odd that these where considered budget pickups in their heyday. The production process is so much more labor intensive than many other pickups. Especially the wrapped ones with no bobbin.

Great video but I would have liked a swinging, groovy 60's era demo to round the clip off "Groovy Baabbeeeyyy"!

Not a good idea for trisonic pickups!
The lack of bobin is essential part of the sound....

      Hahahahaha XD
A- Paper has a very close magnetic effect to nothing
B- Once finished you can destroy the paper bobin to make you feel good with your belief that paper has an effect
C- Trisonics are now wax potted, that has way more effect on sound, but if you really want the "original sound" do as dirty as Brian did : put tape between wires and casing and fill the thing with araldite. Or better : do all the shitty experiments he did before giving the work to Burns.

"The lake of bobin is essential part of the sound..." really, thank you for the laugh.

Actually, Bloodysugar, Stainless Steel never said anything about the paper's molecular composition being an issue...
      The shape however is!
Original Tri-Sonics were hand-wound and the coils were taped around between the coil causing the coil shape to turn cylindrical, without flats (as in the case when using a bobbin). It is the random and cylindrical shape of the coil which is an essential part of the sound; as is the case with ANY pickup.
Your smart-ass demeanor and overly assumptive response shows your utter lack of intelligence and class.

@@Dustin2112 Oriiginal Tri-Sonic it's made with 44awg formvar wire, not plain enamel and has 2 blocks of isotropic ferrite.
