The tour guide don't have to work for the government To be happy. This is the colonial way of reasoning that is why we are still in our present situation in Africa today. It looks he's good with his job and might not want to work with the government. If you had suggested sponsoring the man for a documentary that would have made more sense.

The bitter taste of liberty. This poem was written by David Mandessi Diop who was born in Bordeaux to a Senegalese father and a Cameroonian mother. Reciting the poem in French is more beautiful!

I've never heard or read this poem before. It moved me to tears just 3 lines in. Who is the poet that wrote this beautiful piece? I'll be sure to remember it and teach it to my children, nieces and nephews.
You do not have to recite it in those slave master languages..It is a beautiful poem with deep meaning..I'm a poet...Thats a deep poem.

I'm African American, and used to live in Gambia. Juffere was one place I used to hang out from time to time. Kunta kinte family became my good friends. I was the one who brought the movie roots to the village for the people there to see.even though the movie was made there,they never seen the movie. Never ever forget kunta kinte.I hope lamin in juffere is watching this or reading this. If so please respond back. It's your old friend Kweku. I'm back in America. I remember when Roots was released in Africa; many could not wait for the next episode. I think it was the first time a majority of Africans got a glimpse of the conditions of the Africans who were forced into slavery in America.

@@BIGMAMMA183 So many Africans, even today, do not know about slavery. Even the syllabus, which was designed by Colonialists, has very little to say about slavery. It's now due to YT that I get to watch movies on slavery.
@Black To Grace So true. There has to be a sensitisation of Africans, esp rural ones, as to what happened during slavery. Maybe that is why they are so welcoming of ytes.
@@getoutofthematrix3757 it's exactly that because our history is blind to us so we just grow up thinking that what our ancestors are telling us about whites is true. Here in malawi they assume all white people are nice to the point where they'll be screaming and shouting in a parade esque manner when white people are going to game reserves. Not knowing those are the same people poaching their animals🤦♂️

As the old African proverb says “Until the lion tells his side of the story, the tale of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.” We’ve only heard the side of the Europeans, they say we didn’t resist, that’s not true, the Kongo ruler Nzinga Mbemba resisted and fought against slavery, the queen of Ndongo (modern-day Angola) Nzinga Mbandi, resisted, in present day Senegal 🇸🇳 and Guinea , the kingdoms of Fouta Toro and Fouta Djalon resisted, the Queen of Walo (Sénégal) Ndate Yalla was a fierce warrior queen who resisted. Several major African kingdoms took measures to limit and suppress the slave trade, including the kingdoms of Benin and Dahomey. Agaja Trudo, the king of Dahomey (r. 1708-40), banned the slave trade and even went as far as attacking the European forts on the coast. Unfortunately, Agaja Trudo’s successor did not share his view and profited from engaging in the trade.

This is a POV that I have been ruminating on for a bit. Africa was filled with extraordinary people with astonishing lives and although slavery is a prominent part of our history, it's not all that we are. I intend to write a story that delves into the African way of life before colonization.

Rena Kalahiki yes they were, most of the salves that arrived in the 1500’s arrived in Brazil. Brazil has the largest Portuguese speaking population in the world. The largest African population outside of Africa is also Brazil. When you study the history of sugar, you will come to understand that sugar was one of the major catalyst and capital in the Transatlantic slave trade. Sugar was the cocaine during that time of history. Most of the people who owned those ships were “Jews” with Spanish last names.

Read about Ancient Egyptians, Ethiopians, Nigerians etc. There is more than enough blame to go around but that was the ancient world. The difference is the level of brutality, forced name change, forced working without compensation forever or until death, started with the Europeans not the Arabs. Blaming Arabs for what is clearly not an Arab practice is ridiculous, It has no historical precedent. Ex look up Africans living in Iraq, they have been there for over 400yrs. They know that they are Africans, most have not mixed, and they are not slaves, Most never where.

Was a black slave and many others that where freed and where great people in history. Bilal became the governor of Syria, slavery among the Arab was different from the Europeans. Its time to bring some Light onto the story of KUNTA KINTE First of all nobody mentioned that Kunta was actually the Great Grandfather of The African American writer named ALEX HAILEY who traced his family ROOTS from America back to his original homeland in the Gambia. The history of Kunta Kinte was passed down through 300 years of slavery through His family very much as history of my family was passed on to me. Not all African Americans lost their African roots of culture and traditions through the Atlantic Slave Trade. The Island became famous after Alex Hailey wrote the book ROOTS and made his pilgrimage from America back to the homeland of his Great Grandfather Kunta Kinte. In the late 1970's and the island became a part of African American History as well as one of the most known tourist areas in Africa.
