Denny Payton's sax playing gave the DC5 their unique sound. They were a heck of great rock band and over in Canada we loved them as much as the Beatles,
Great job on this tribute to Dennis Payton. The Dave Clark 5 were my favorite group growing up. With Mike Smith's vocals and keyboards and Dennis on saxophone and vocals - it didn't get any better. I'm almost 68 years old. Dennis was way too young to be called home. What a great guy and all of the great music. God Bless. Roger (San Diego)
I have love the DC5 since I was 9 years old..I love all their songs.. But now I'm already ,65 and I never tired of listening to their songs.a terried eye huhuhu.
Where did our youth go? So sad it's now down to The Dave Clark Two (The DC2) in this life, exactly the same number as there are Beatles left. But in that afterlife some of us believe in and hope exists, there are now more DC5 guys than there are Beatles. I only hope someday we may all be young again, and hear and see all our favorite rock & roll groups looking and sounding just as exciting and vital as when they first appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show," "Ready Steady Go!," and "Shindig!" Indeed, if I could live one part of my life continuously repeated as in that film "Groundhog Day," I would want to relive the years 1964-69 over and over and over again.
I do believe that Denis was a gentleman and a kind-hearted person all of his life. I had the good fortune to meet him along with the other DC 5 members back in the 60s and he was very gracious. Certainly did not act like a rock star! He was multi-talented.
I have been a big DC5 fan since 1964. I loved Denny Payton's sax playing, but from what I've learned since then, he also was the back up singer to that forgotten, really great rock/soul singer, Mike Smith. To back up Mike Smith's great singing means that Denny must also have been a great singer as well as a great instrumentalist. He co-wrote ( with Dave Clark) the songs: "Funny," "Ol' Sol," "Give Me Love," "Don't You Know," "I'll Be Running," "I'll Never Know," "I'm Thinking," "Dum-Dee-Dee-Dum, "On the Move," "I Never Will," "Ever Since You've Been Away," and "It Didn't Feel Good," and that is just what I know from the DC5 collection of vinyl albums that I have. Most of the songs are great rock/proto-heavy-metal songs (hey, hard- and heavy-metal rock fans, check them out!) and a few are ballads. I am a cancer survivor. I wish Denny were one as well.
+Stephanee Turschmann So, then that must be Denis singing lead on "We'll Be Running". I once had everything they've recorded also. Hope you are in good health!
Why me I loved DC5 Would of given my right arm to meet them. I am a no body will always be. Bless Dennis and all the others that died. Sorry for you pain I have so much myself. Maybe when Jesus returns the pain will be lifted for us all. Bless his family.
What a beautiful and touching tribute. I was never a particular fan of the group, but with the documentary airing currently on PBS here in the states, I have come to appreciate the band very much. Dennis seems to have been someone I would have enjoyed knowing and calling "friend". My sympathies to those who knew him and miss him.
Hermoso tributo para quienes lo conocieron en vida ; gran talento de la música de su época; me permite conocerlo más al abuelo de mis nietos Daniel y Steven.
Awesome tribute! From the photos shown it would seem that Dennis Payton was a happy man who lived a full life. That's all that we can hope for our heroes and this tribute was affirmation that his life was wholesome and rewarding. Thank You.
this band's music came through the radio like a ray of warm sunshine on a brutal winter day...color in a black and white world. there were not many "rock" bands that featured a saxophone in the mix and Dennis added a unique texture to compliment the compositions of DC5. I am so sorry he passed on so young, but what a life! what a legacy of sound he has left behind for us to enjoy. Thank you!
The DC5 would be just another band without the bad-ass saxophone sound of Dennis Payton. He was such a huge presence on those earlier, more successful albums. That last bit that he said at the end of this video was so brave and a very caring thing to say to his folks, so that they could move on. Respect!
very nice, thanks..loved the band in my youth...knew nothing about Dennis, but this gives us a sense...he seems to have made the right choices...a pleasant switch for most rock stars
This is a such a well done tribute to Denis.Thank you so much for giving us a peek at Denis' life, other than being that fabulous sax player for the DC5 . No one can miss him more than his family and close friends, but the DC5 universe will always keep him in our hearts.
Denny had a brilliant voice. He sang with great style he made the group what they were. I always felt he was very underated. A true sound of the sixties and seventies.
bigtone1348 Scott is a class act.... I've worked with him for just over a year and he never mentioned who his father was... he did tell me about the cancer battle, as my father in law is just starting treatment, but never said a word about what his dad did...
Very nice. Funny I found this on the anniversary of his death. Lucky enough to see the DC 5 live in 1965 - the week Over and Over was #1 - which if memory serves, was last week. This was one super group when they played live.
i saw the dave clark five being inducted in the rock n roll hall of fame on tv in 2008 wouldv'e been cool to see all five together again since 1970 but sadly denis passed away then mike smith great band
Even if Dennis Payton wasn't a member of the DC5...he very much to have had a incredibly rich life with his family and friends. Could anyone ask for more??
P.S My comments about Denis Payton includes a typo: "I'll Be Running" is not the correct title of the song. It is: "We'll Be Running." I'm sorry, Denis.
Denis was multi-talented and played several instruments in addition to singing with the group. He was a kind, generous and loving man. I miss him.
The Joy of Sax. #Payton #RIP

Denis loved his family and enjoyed being around kids. He was handsome, smart, and played different instruments in addition to singing. Miss you 💔🌹😢

I think of him often. Kind gentle man. He is missed.
Why me I loved DC5 Would of given my right arm to meet them. I am a no body will always be. Bless Dennis and all the others that died. Sorry for you pain I have so much myself. Maybe when Jesus returns the pain will be lifted for us all. Bless his family.

Dennis was a neighbour in Bournemouth. My daughter paid him her rent at Scott Payton in Boscombe. Always a gentleman

Denis Payton; 11 August 1943 - 17 December 2006
Dennis was one of the main inspirations for Springsteen's adding The Big Man on sax to the E Street Band.
Nice tribute.
