  • In my video, I delve into determining the optimal dumpster size for those starting or expanding a dumpster business. I compare 10, 15, and 20-yard dumpsters, focusing on their profitability and demand. I share insights from my experience, particularly emphasizing the unexpected success and customer preference for 20-yard dumpsters. This video serves as a guide for business owners to make informed decisions by inspecting their own dumpster data to make the best decision in their business.

Completely agree.. added 23 yarders about July and have been sold out since. It got me into more of those 30 yard situations..

Good video. I was in your same boat when I bought all my system I bought one 10 yard, two15s and 1-20. After a few months, I noticed that my 20 yard was always out and I’d have 15 laying around every now and then so I bought another 20 and almost immediately that was rented out. So the point of it is I now have 10-20’s 3-15’s and 1-10. I will definitely never buy any more tens if somebody calls me and really wants the 10 I just give them the 15 for the price of the 10 at the end of the day. It doesn’t change my profit. It’s still the same price to take it to the customer. Still the same price to take it to the landfill. I offer 2 tons in every can.

That’s a great point! We can always upgrade, but can’t downgrade without real trouble. I’d rather over deliver than let a customer down any day of the week.
It seems that being in business this long has really started to pay off with solid feedback/data so I can make more informed business decisions, almost compounding interest or something.
It seems like the nature of the beast is, the bigger the better. That’s awesome you’re rolling with 10 - 20’s! It seems like that’s the trajectory I’ll be following as well. Thank you for sharing your process here! It helps us all!! 😎🚜💨

Good job keeping track of the most profitable you have to go for what gives you the best return on your investment. Like others said you can always bring a larger bin if your out of smaller ones but not vice versa 👍

Another great video. I currently have what I"m calling 15s that are actually 16.5 yards if you do the math. I'm trying to get 20s in my next push. that will be my primary focus going forward. I do want to grab a 4 yarder for concrete/dirt, and maybe a 10 yard down the line but the 20s are calling to me!

Great video topic and insight. Question for you. At what point in your business journey do you envision yourself, if at all, getting rid of the dump trailers and offering just rolloff cans? Do you consider them to be an inconvenience to you since you need to go back to the yard and get a different truck on busy days?

My own 15 yard dump trailer will be sold asap this year after some maintenance is done. As far as renting out the 17 yard trailers, I will either be keeping them on the website for special situations, marketing them as an even more unique option or taking them completely off of the website and simply offering them as emergency replacements for cans if I have nothing available and someone calls on a weekend or something, protecting my time with cans.
This will allow me to save money on TIRES lol, insurance, registration, all things for pickup truck(possibly selling 2 of them) and more.
The swapping out vehicles hasn’t been as noticeable as maybe it is for others who have gone through it. I do recognize it’s a thing and another time divider that is unnecessary when I have a straight path forward in cans with one truck for all.
I still see that there’s value in having more than one type of option (can and trailer), however I’m getting closer to the realization that just because there’s a unique value in having two doesn’t mean it’s automatically MORE valuable than just more efficiently running one. This is a stepping stone growth moment I’m hesitant but willing to make a move as I see it’s best for the business. Sometimes less really is more!

Last year it felt like I had a decent balance of 15/20 yard bookings. This year it’s been basically all 20s so far.

$$$ let’s go!! My average ticket price has only been going up and I’m loving it. Hoping the best for our 20’s to not come back to the yard all year!! 😎🚜💨

Great video and info. One other piece is you can always drop a customer a 20 if they want a 15 but you do not have a 15 available. They feel they got more than they paid for and you still get the business. dropping a 15 when they paid for a 20 would not work. Ben

Thanks for sharing that! I completely agree! A missed opportunity because you’re stingy with giving more or letting a customer down with a smaller size are not acceptable.
Gain or keep a customer and give more value through a larger size! Thanks for sharing!
