I appreciate anyone that can mix PsyTrance. I fell in love with it a few years back. It's strange but I'm 50, white and live in Missouri. Yep, I love Psytrance. I noticed you have Azax on this one...Awesome...My favorite band is Electric Universe. They make me happy. Thanks for the awesome mix here...Keep it up............:-)
"psytrance DJs only tend to barely mix one track into the next and that's it.... which is kind of boring nowadays." Guilty as charged!! So glad I found these tutorials, I will definitely be coming back to these when I get my decks up and running again.
Wow i never realised i had been mixing psytrance the way you do ! I personally hate when dj's play tracks from beginning to end with little mixing, superb mix !
Thanks mate. And yes, you're right. But I didn't do this trying to build a set, this was just to show that psytrance can be mashuped and mixed more creatively than what we're used to listen.
a) thank you for doing this and sharing, b) it would be very educational for us if you could use notifications to explain what you are doing -or at least a hint, (just an idea, because i really appreciate this and your psy mix tutorial). thanks again, i
Very impressive mixing skills. Your mashups float nicely without getting too loopy or drowned in FX. You could however try to make the mix to go more progressive into full-on over the full lenght.
I’m a professional psytrance DJ. I play uk psy which many people confuse with full on for their similarities and watching you is like watching a masterclass mate.
I'll be posting mine up hopefully within a week or so. I am getting better, for some reason, ever since I watched this video, I am now all mostly into mixing goa/psytrance all mashed up like this, on this video. yuppers, you get very interesting results and at times you will be surprised how well it sounds together I know I did.
Yeah, when mixing full on, where there's a break every 3 minutes, you have to do something with those. Otherwise people get tired of having a break so often ;)
what a smashing mash up! this is definitely the way to mix psytrance, going back and forth in tracks! and so what if you sync :) leaves room for creativity!
No, I'm not using any of the new Traktor Pro 2 Macro FX. Digital LoFi and Gater are old Traktor effects, you should have them. Try going into Preferences > Effects and see if they are in the list of "Pre-Selected Effects". If not, add them from the Available Effects list aside.
That was sooo sick dude! You're so talented keep it up. I got my mc3000 a few weks ago and have been teaching myself a few basics of mixing and your videos really helped me out a lot so cheers for that.
Great mix, I am looking into starting mixing psytrance after failing to produce it ;) Though I totaly agree far to many producers just play their album start to end with little mixing at all, however mixing like this is so much more dynamic and I dont have to sit around waiting for breaks to end, which is fine when casualy listening but not live :D
Bands don't play the album from start to end in a show, they always do something new, different, in another order. So why is that psytrance producers can't do the same if they have even more tools to do it? Lots of great ways to do REAL live acts when you are a producer (you have the stems of the tracks, you can mix them, re-arrange them, etc). They are just being too lazy... I do more stuff live than those called "live acts" and it shouldn't be that way... I hope someday that'll change, but unless people start demanding real live acts (which is what they pay for) instead of boring premixed sets, nothing will ever change.
You should push the scene and try and get a set at a psytrance festival maybe? I would pay lots after hearing your mixes and seeing what you do live here, I remember seeing a zentura set online and despite being two of them, they still seemed to only mix out the end of each track rather than how you do it. Oh and what software and controller could you recomend me to take this up?
Ewan Mclaughlin Thank you Ewan, I really appreciate someone notices my effort in doing this. Regarding in playing in a festival, it's definitely on my plan, problem is I live in Argentina, where the psy scene is really small, there are no big festivals really. I'm planning to move to Europe, hopefully in 1 o 2 years. Once there we I know I can get gigs anywhere. Where are you from btw? The software is the well known Traktor Pro 2 and the controller is a Denon MC3000, but it could be done with any other software and controller. I had awesome results with both.
Yeah ok, cheers, I will have a look online and get some stuff :D I am planning on playing sets at freind's house parties in an effort to convert them to psytrance, so would you recomend getting a decent audio system to use there? I live in Britain, where like where you live the trance/ psytrance scene is almost non existant. But mainland europe is where its at, you've got Ozora, Boom and many other festivals. You should definataly move over to europe, I've heard that the psy scene in North East Europe and Switzerland is commonly appreciated. Where are you planning to move?
Definitely, psytrance is only appreciated with a good audio system ;) Yeah, I know about those festivals and how the scene is in most european countries. Right now the plan is to go to Portugal (which has a huge full-on scene),
Very lovely job! I agree that this way of mixing is way more interesting! I got back to psy after about 10 years of other music and now enjoy it a lot while working (im research scientist). Especially your mixes get me to good mood. And btw, its funny to see yourself dancing :)
Hey, thanks! I downloaded Raycotek mapping but modify several things. I remapped the pitchbend buttons to beatjump -32/+32, look for them in the controller manager. The freeze delay is done by mapping the "button 2" of a delay effect unit. If you have to hold it to freeze, then just switch to to Toggle mode instead of Hold. I suggest you read/watch some tutorial on Traktor controller mapping, it's hard to understand it at first. Good luck
I can tell you immediately that you know what's going on on that mixer to 125%! You're amazing dude, one thing I've noticed is how you jump back and forth in the track by just pressing a single button. I've got the same controller with Raycoteks 4 Full Deck mapping, and I can't find the shortcuts for beatjumping. Neither can I find the instructions how to "lock on" the freeze delay effect so you wont have a hard time holding down the freeze delay button meanwhile doing other stuff.
Yes, the progressive set I have in my channel is done this way, layering 2 tracks most of the time. And because they have less elements than full on it's easier to get a good sound with 2 tracks. Only problem is... I don't like prog very much. In fact, I hate how everything is turning proggy =P
Just got into mixing, trying to teach myself and having fun so far. :) Watching this makes me want to get this good haha. Very creative and energising. Dictating the flow of the vibe/audience.
I recorded the screen with Screenflow (Mac), recorded the set with Traktor's recorder and, of course, recorded my controller. Then you need to know a little bit about video editing and put everything together. I'm no expert, but I googled how to overlay a video on top of another.
I found some cue delays, bad detection problems, etc, Finally found the culprit, If you press the sync button and start messing with the cue button, seems like theres a bug between the mc3000 and the traktor pro 2 program, setting up cue's is not very accurate, pressing cue button at times doesnt do anything, sometimes some delays, etc, but soon as I take he sync button off, PERFECT!!. I rather have the sync button on as if you hit the tempo control, it wont do anything, its locked.
When you get a chance, upload some of your work, I'll upload mine when the time is right, I am still all very new to mixing, I was big into producing back then, don't have the patience for it, I might do it here and there but mostly all mixing for now. Also BTW: Artha - Insidelamp FTW
Yeah, it takes time. But at some point you'll be listening to one track and you'll know in your head which tracks could be mixed in. Pay especial attention to the basslines. Just keep practicing and enjoy it!
Hey its sorrowfulconscious21 again, so far its going prettie good, this is one good mixer, been playing around for over 4-5 hrs I believe. I found some tracks while putting them together like how you do in the beginning, I was just experimenting to see if it blends well, I found some and I was surprised how well it blends together, this certainly takes some time to get used to, Well get better overtime. Ever dj at clubs, etc?? your very good I think, you should go out and do at gigs.
Behringer 4 channel and vestax cd j. I think it was the 2nd vestax cd mixer. We used to leave the vestax slider in the middle (and use it to break/load) and plug the behringer into the 2 cd top load drawers of the vestax. The other 2 were open to sampling via other auxiliaries mini disks were the rage back then hahahaha or another mixer at parties. Djs will become like classic music composers on stage with one or two of those little sticks for high and melody, hips for middle and feet for bass programmed into a feed of your choosing (ie dance moves/and composing = Mix) Fuck yeah 💃
I can't help you with that. Just start by mixing what you like, experimenting and just enjoying. This isn't a channel about how to learn to mix. This is just some ideas about psytrance mixing (but you should know the basics already). I can recommend you the following sites. digitaldjtips and djtechtools (google them) - Good luck!
There are parts that sounds overloaded, yes, I give you that, but there are parts that both tracks sound great together. This is not a set that I'd play for an actual crowd, this is just a show off of mixing techniques, trying to show that psy can also be creatively mixed, that you can do more than the plain old intro/outro mix. But yes, it's exaggerated to show the point and some parts doesn't sound good. Check out my latest set "Xtreme Dementia" and let me know if you can enjoy it =)
Sync and key lock are very different features. I use sync because it does the mechanic job, which saves me time and allows me to do these kind of mixing. And I don't use key lock because it degrades the sound, check this video /watch?v=jM64W96xqP0
I was trying to figure out how to mix psytrance in a good way. Thanks to that video and your guide now I at least now 'something' (need time to process it nad fully understand it). Although the problem for me is the lack of mixer and it's kind hard to mix tracks on traktor without it (I'm a beginner so I just mix tracks in linear way). Still I haven't seen that kind of mixing anywhere and I hope that it will occur more often. Subded and waiting for more psytrance mixes :D
i do alot of 2 tracks mixing in psy and prog but i do it very different to you i love how u fade then bass up on secondary track then drop back into primary. when playing 2 tracks together i am always very conscious of the otherwise it sounds abit off do you consider this?. but anyway i have been waiting to see an actual video of someone DJ'ing psy as apose to just a mix with some picture. you could be the psychedelic ravine! so keep it up ive subbed =)
I'll be posting my first 8+min mix soon, btw no one responded on how the uploader recorded this along with the bar graph and music with precision, reply soon.
watched this vid and thought to myself how can he mix like that so quickly on that small controller seems crowded, haha ended up buying the same one on impulse and damn i love it
Yes, key is one of the most important aspects while mixing psy for me. So of course I consider it. I don't like how swapping between completely different and harmonically imcompatible basses sound. Haha, being the "psychedelic ravine" would be awesome, need a lot more of subcribers for that =P
Saludos!
Here was great boom of psy on 2004-2008. Its a logical, that it was boom of drags too))) it can be possible to watch 6-10 open-airs near Moscow in one night) funny and sadly))) good luck in your creation. Plur!
Same here in mtl, we have a great scene but most people are into electro and dubstep ;S and theres almost no goa at all, do you like old school acid/goa man ?
yup getting quite a bit better, Question, what program or method did you use to record the video and the music at the same time while you are mixing?? Showing the 2 bar graphs, the mixer and music with precision?? Reply soon.
Thanks. Not as much as you'd think. You have to know the songs, yes. But you don't have to know them from start to end in your head, you help yourself by looking at the waveforms. If you do the right homework, then you can choose tracks you know go well together. That's not a lot of preparation, that just the preparation a DJ needs to do. I mean, you can't mix smoothly bananas with potatoes ;)
When I feel that I can make a basic mix with little error I will definitely be posting something, and best of luck to you too. Also, I can't figure out how to record with traktor, I looked up tutorials and set mine up just like they said but nothing :(
Man buenisimo, me re gusto, me inspira a comprarme un controlador y empezar a aprender.

Wow i never realised i had been mixing psytrance the way you do ! I personally hate when dj's play tracks from beginning to end with little mixing, superb mix !

I'm not sure exactly but yes, a couple of months, practicing almost every day. Just go with it and enjoy it =)
ur mixing is very sick men big respect from me!
if u can do this without sync then u are my hero.
waking up and the first thing i'm doing, is finding this video:D its a nice morning :b: D

Just got into mixing, trying to teach myself and having fun so far. :) Watching this makes me want to get this good haha. Very creative and energising. Dictating the flow of the vibe/audience.
Are you using a custom mapping? I see you're using the pitch bend (-) button to jump back 8 bars.
Brilliant how at 17' song sounds soo well together
Brilliant, this is amazing, the tracks sound better like this. I am only just starting to mix, and this has given some great inspiration.
Yes definitely some nice mixing skills :) I need a lot of work but also nice usage of this potent controller ! keep it up and subbed!
thanx for sharin' the new age of musik!!!!!!

really smart mix! flow wise! Nice video bro!
Good videos man ! Learnt alot over the last year just watching these videos ! Cheers man !!
thats great i hope so!!
i really enjoyed this different mixing technique
Both are great controllers, but I prefer the Denon because the S2 doesn't have dedicated filter knobs. It's a matter of personal preference.
This 6:38 transition , you really know your shit ! Sound awesome.
Thanks man! Cheers from the other side of the world (Argentina).
When you get a chance, upload some of your work, I'll upload mine when the time is right, I am still all very new to mixing, I was big into producing back then, don't have the patience for it, I might do it here and there but mostly all mixing for now.

Thanks pal!
Thanks for the reply, I think im gonna go with the s4 for all the great optios it offers, what do you think?
Yeah, it takes time. But at some point you'll be listening to one track and you'll know in your head which tracks could be mixed in. Pay especial attention to the basslines.
Just keep practicing and enjoy it!
Thanks, keep them coming. I'm learning to mix prog psy trance on cdj100s so not to much fancy stuff for me.

Probably using OBS studio
watched this vid and thought to myself how can he mix like that so quickly on that small controller seems crowded, haha ended up buying the same one on impulse and damn i love it
It's not that crowded really. It's size allows you to do more stuff and reducing arm movement ;)

I think I understand now why I need a midi controller :-) Very inspirational, thank you
Yeah, exactly. I just don't understand how some djs use Traktor with only a mouse and an external mixer. It's not enough.

nice mashup, glad u put some portuguese power, D_Maniac!
congrats
Saludos!
Holy shit nice man. Seems this could be applied to other genres like DnB. Do you have any vids with different styles of music?
Thanks man. I don't have vids with other styles yet. I might do one in the future =)
proper mixing not touching em thangs just for the show ✊️
buuuuuenisimoo!!! saludos desde Chile!!!!
I mean, you can't mix smoothly bananas with potatoes ;)
come back please!
When I feel that I can make a basic mix with little error I will definitely be posting something, and best of luck to you too. Also, I can't figure out how to record with traktor, I looked up tutorials and set mine up just like they said but nothing :(
I have a request, please mix Artha - Insidelamp with something please, I want to see, thanks.
What 2 songs you recommend in the beginning for starters on the same mc3000 your using?
And what should I work on first??
Nevermind, I was blind, I saw it, lol.
How long did it take for you to get this good? 5-6 months? how many hrs a day? just curious.
very nice... I lack a lot of work then :D do you prepare the list of tracks or do you go impro into your big folders ?
Thanks man. This particular list was prepared, but I can also improvise from my whole library.
Man buenisimo, me re gusto, me inspira a comprarme un controlador y empezar a aprender.
Quiero aprenderrrrr.
+Leonardo Comerci Jajaja, si, gracias. Igual no estoy mezclando mas. Un saludo!
