3D Object Tracking in After Effects (not done with the 3d camera tracker!!)
In this new tutorial by flomotion, you will learn a professional workflow for 3d object tracking in after effects.
As we are finally able to import 3D objects with textures natively into After Effects (obj, fbx,glb ) I tired to combine this with a really awesome Object tracking tool for after effects wich is called "GeoTracker" from "KeenTools" and it is absolutely free.
Facial exressions and facial tracker!
Track a face and head with custom 3d shapes as well as primitive shapes!
So follow me doing a face track in 3d space, and animate some lights (ambient and point lights)
And I am also going to animate the 3d skull in a very smart way, as we use the audio file to drive the animation!
attention: it is getting ADVANCED again! ...and professional!!
But no worries, there will be many useful tips and tricks for effects and workflows also for beginners and intermediates in this online tutorial video lesson...
we will really benefit from all the new features in after effects 2023

@@flo.motion awesome! If you could also add the mesh for the head you substituted for the primitive that would be super helpful too! Looking forward to following along. You have really helped me grow my skills over the last year! Thanks!
@@roryviner263 we need that mesh please, I've been searching turbosquid but i cant find it :(
@@roryviner263 open zbrush , there is a lot
@@flo.motion i cant find this scull for free..3d model like in your video is free or not?((
I'm using after effects since 3 years now and never heard about this plugin. For simple and even some advanced tasks you now don't need a 3d software. Amazing!
So true!! Thanks a lot!!
Once again, you've made a tutorial like no other on TH-cam. This is extraordinary and opens up a lot of possibilities. Can't wait to start trying it out for myself!
Thank you so so much!!
@@flo.motion questions, can I use this plugin also as a mocha planar tracker and then apply the tracking nfo to a video layer with the ability to change the transformation size and position.
I've been using AE for over 10 years, this is a great tutorial and intro to GeoTracker, really well done man.
Thanks a lot!!!!
So cool! I waited for this and it came so fast. Thank you for this @flomotion I learned a lot. This is a huge help to professionally lazy video editors! 😆 Love the humor on your videos! Keep it coming!
Haha... thanks a lot!!
wow the way you composited that skull was so good
You could track a suit in the same way 😎😎
Wow! Great tutorial man! So simple and yet so powerful! I learned a lot from this short video! I will definitely be using more 3D in my workflow now :D
Jeah! Have you checked out my recent video about this topic??

I really like that's now possible to import 3d glb files!!! Thanks for your work Flo
Always happy to help!!
I've just tried to import and it doesn't let me, any ideas? I got the 2023 version.
nvm it's in the beta version only atm
3d models are flickering and disappearing and original clip keeps flickering and cutting when rendering, in preview in after effects, perfectly fine, when rendering, everything goes haywire, any ideas anyone?
Hey! In the render module you can also set the quality! Simply bring that slider up!! 😎
This is what I've been waiting on!!!
Jeah!! Hope you like it!!
Nice one!!! didn't know about the new 3D capabilities!!! thanks for everything

thank you for this tutorial, very exciting to have a 3d object tracker in after effects.
Glad it was helpful!
Great Tutorial as always
Thanks a lot!!
Killer tutorial my man! Thank you!
Wow!! Thanks a lot!!
Any idea why the analysing footage is taking forever? Its been 10+ minutes and its only at 22% this isn't right, i have a 3090ti gpu and a ryzen 9 3950x cpu, is it really this slow of analysing before i can use the toolbar to track the footage with my object?
Hey, how long is your footage? And in which resolution? 10minutes for 22%... so about 45 mins for a whole shot... could be... my shot of 10 seconds took about 5mins though..
@@flo.motion i figgured it out, my footage was in 4k, so scaled it down and cut it into shorter clips too
Thank you for the link ...great as usually...

I'm putting this on my 2do list, after Xmas madness at work subsides.
1st half of January usually is pretty quiet at the studio.
Ji-Ha!! Have you done it??
Thanks so much.
Thanks
Although I wouldnt consider this for full blown 3D vfx, this is really good for simple 3D vfx which will def enhance your videos. However, I see people pushing this to its limits in creativity so its going to be exciting.
So true!!
Beside the obvious and great 3D object track solution that it is, it seems like a viable solution for planar tracker in the phone/tablet case scenario when hands and fingers crossing cause subtle vibrations that Mocha can't handle properly because of occlusion. Thanks!
Ibhave to try that out! Great idea!!
hey dude. thank you.
Thanks Dude!!

Wie geht's is so amazing!!!🔥🔥
Haha ok!!
Thanks for this. The one issue I see cropping up for all of these instructional videos is the actor movement is incredibly slow and not representative of what an actual scene would be. It would be great if you could do a follow-up with natural human movement, turns, profile angles, walking...etc
Got you! My issue is that I need to show examples that are easy to understand an to watch... but I will definitely try to also incorporate more "real world" examples!! Btw: the tracker does a really good job for fast moves or even 360° spins... you just need a few more keyframes

Flo, thank you for this tutorial. It seems too good to be true! May I make a request? Would it be possible to make a tutorial, or at least devote a video to evaluating the uses of this free product, along side Chris Vranos' Lockdown, AE's native trackers and Boris FX' planar tracking, etc?
If have done sepeeate Videos on All of them, so it would totally make sense to do that...
Great tutorial!! Thanks! And where is the overview tutorial where it shows you everything you can do in AE, please?
Overview over After Effects?? Coming soon!!
That’s awesome thank you! Where did you get your Head Object for the tracking?
Hey! Links are in the description text!!
@@flo.motion Yeah only to trubosquid directly. What to search for ? i searched for head wireframe and found nothing !?
3D model support is available in the After Effects 24.1 official release (no longer Beta)!
it is indeed!!
Hey! This is a fantastic tutorial, I had no idea this was possible. Subscribed! Do you know if it’s possible to export the tracking data? Like to .fbx to use in Maya or Blender?
Hey! Haven't tried it out, but I am pretty sure you can do that as there are tutorials about that on KeenTools website!!
Nice
Thank you
Thanks dear for upload so early
Now you are good boy,,☺️
Awesome trick as usual and its geotracker is new to me now I sure check it
God bless you and
Always make you happy
You are welcome!! Thanks for the comment!!
Cool
Indeed!!
Good
Yes
I’m just learning about all these effects available for the average user . My question is, when is green screen even necessary then? It seems you can do almost anything without green screen .
In what situation would green screen or objects in green be useful for later adding special effects?
I would use it if you want to key trycky stuff like fabric or hair!! Still the best method even with all AI tools available these days
Hi ya thanks for the tutorial, so it only works in AFX beta version now right?
Tracker wirks in all version. But rhe native 3d Import only worls in the beta... you could for example use every Version for the tracker and then use Element3D. But the beta is for free if you already have AE installed 😎
wow
Tnx
Hey man not really funny but very informative, thank you!
Thanks for the feedback... how can I improve?? 🥸
@@flo.motion maybe less laughing sound effects? 😅
wow,
Tnx
Hello, nice video. Is It possible to do that but with a full body?
It is! You could track each part separately or use wonder studio. You can watch my video on that on my channel!
hanks for this tuto. One question " why in after effects they told me 3D model for use with trapecode" thank you very much
Well... maybe because you can use 3D models in trapcode, for example trapcode form... but of course you can also use it natively now in the beta or in other 3D software! Hope that helps
thanks for share, you are a crack, what version of AE works with? rgds from México
Hey! As AE is subscription based I always ust the newest version!!
Looks like the glb files cannot be imported anymore, maybe in future updates, but for now, it is not possible anymore, I used obj with E3D, then created a null from 3d object and parent the position/rotation etc.
You need to use the Beta Version. It was never possible in the standard version!
i have a query, you used a skull for your tracking so seperating the jaw part was easy but what if i want to use an actual face model.....so, do we have something for that as well? like can we use the rigs for it or something?
Hey, for the tracking there is a model of a face already built in where you can enable all different parts of the head! And you find the same head for free as a 3D model in the internet! ;)
How much Adobe pay you for this…I approve!!!!
Noone pays me anything... Tutorial-Punk!!

Haha... you know FLOmotion... SKULLmotion... understand? Funny, isn't it??
hmmm fun
Jeah! Thanks!!
@flomotion Can you link the head obj? Thanks
Done
Can I do this using element 3d? And can i use the same lights for that or do i need to do it a different way? :))
Hey! You can watch my new tutorial about that. I show how to do it in element and natively in After Effects
@@flo.motion thanksss
Great tutorial! However, I was not able to download the 3d assets. When I clicked video clip pilot I was able to download the Halloween pack but the files are .obj which are greyed out during import. When I click on turbosquid I cannot find the free head. I found some good skulls I have to pay for which is ok, but noe of them are in the GLB format, they come in the following formats: OBJ
FBX
USDz
Unity
Unreal
glTF
Could you please clarify how to download the asset you are using? thank you
You can use gltf as well. Or use blender to convert. Also AE will ich able to import obj files soon! You will also find a lot of free assets an sketchfab.
great tutorial. I'm confused about the plugin, it appears to be free but there is a buy section that says it's $149 a year for personal projects and $299 for commercial projects. Which is it?
These prices are for our Nuke plug-in. GeoTracker for AE is currently free since it's a beta
Jeah! Just follow the link in the videodescription!
better than Marvel
Really??
Excellent, you can put the link of the 3d model, because I don't see it on the web that you tell us
Haha... You will find it there... No worries
@@flo.motion I keep looking hahaha
but the obj file.. does it need to be built in a specific way or does it just import the wireframe that it needs
no specific way needed!
Update. I could not find the glb file but I was able to download a cool gilt file of a different skull. Now new problem, I followed you steps to export the 3d null but for some reason the null goes way off the working area. After switching thought the different views, in the "left view" I realized that the null was way in front the video layer so when I parent the skull with the null it flies all over the place. The question is then how do you adjust the null or how do you make sure the null lands I the right spot in 3d space? There are not may options in the export drop down menu, only link and mode. thank you
Hey! Did you create a camera before tracking? That is important! Or do you even have a camera??
@@flo.motion Thank for reply. Yes I followed your step and chose the custom fixed in the geo tracker effect like you did at 3:18 and tried with the "active camera" and "custom fixed"
is set before tracking. I did not see any other cameras that were Brough into the sequence in your tutorial. However, you are correct in the assumption this is something to do with camera. It appears the tracking data is reversed and placed not on the footage but on the camera it self. In other words, when I look from "left" view I can see the camera moving and the skull moving in accordance, almost as if the skull was a projection from the camera and so the skull sitting at the end of the perspective cone. I hope am I making this clear. I have been troubleshooting this following your steps exactly but somehow can't get around this problem. help would be greatly appreciated. if it helps, I can share a screen recording of the problem. thank you
@@flo.motion Update. I got a solution to my inaccurate tracking from Keentool. The 3d object needed to so be zeroed out at the three dimension in initial position. In other words, the object was tracking correctly, but when dropped into composition it was somewhere else in the 3d space. Perhaps this is common sense, but for someone (like me) who is not familiar with 3D objects this was a frustrating obstacle. I figure I shared this solution, as it is apparently a common problem Keentools has been reached out to, and I am sure few others here have ran into. Thank you for continuing making great tutorials and I feel ready now for the more advance one you have already posted.
Is this plugin only for the Beta version of AE?
Nope! But rhe 3D Import is!!
I'm afraid on something free especially on a plugin as powerful and interesting as this one. does it contain data recovery or tracking?
What do you mean by that? Nope...
@@flo.motion Time cook said : "If it's free, you're the product "I have many plugins like lock down, Mocha pro etc I paid for it but this plugin how can deliver this for free?
Do you understand my thoughts,if it's free without any surprise it's great
@@tarikkodokuna6570 Hi! It's currently free since it's a beta and will stay free until an official release of the paid version.
@@keentools ok thx for your clear feed back,so I will try it!
@flomotion The skull that you putted in the description don't work in after effect, can you give me a link to your GLB skull and jaw please ?
Hey... No worries... I used exactly that skull. Try to convert it to a glb!
@@flo.motion Oh intresting, do you have a tuto for that please ? :)
