I don't like foam rollers; I used them years ago, to paint my bathroom cabinets and despite priming, sanding in between every coat there was an orange peel effect. Instead, I am using velour rollers with a short nap and the woodwork is very smooth. Thank you for the video, I like TOH videos and the crew :)

@@cindykincade589 Hello there. Very sorry to hear about your parents. But that is life I guess; mine are gone too. The thing about velour rollers is that they have a short nap, Very similar to microfiber cloths in appearance. They could be named something else in your area. But they sure are superior to foam rollers. On the packaging, you should see that they are suitable for varnish application. Obviously, this is for woodwork. You would not want that degree of perfection on a ceiling or wall, as the paint will be more matte and will not reflect light as much, showing less imperfections or texture.
This was a great video. It really helped me out. This guy has lots of tricks and tips. He's very fun to watch. I want to watch more of these super helpful videos by this guy. Thank you.
This guy is a hack! I have been painting for 30 years! He didn't paint the edge of the door with the hinges not the hinges but the side that faces out when open. Almost every step was wrong and that paint will fail in a couple months!
The only places to use a brush is inside the grooves. You need to minimize the brush marks. I use the brush inside grooves then lightly use the roller to get rid of any brush marks. This guarantees you consistency. I would never use a brush to paint panels.
Agreed. So now the panels will have brush marks and the rest of the door will have a light textured finish. Weird experts giving better info. Specially when you’re using semi gloss or gloss enamel, it is gonna show Everything In a dark color. Brush the grooves and before that dries roll the whole door and make sure it’s not hot out, you want the whole door to stay wet while you paint or it will look horrible. You also want to tape the edges so if any paint runs down you won’t have a mess on the edge. Honestly the best way is to spray it. Make sure u sand and I would primer it before paint, I have seen the paint peel off the hot metal too many times,
Use a Foam Roller and dry roll runs as it drys. First job I did for a contractor was 10 doors, and I had no clue about painting, but its all came out perfect doing that.
@@frisco61 roller with very little paint on it. Take the paint off the roller using the paint grade. Then come back to the door and check for runs. Also. On metal use a lot Less paint than you think. 2plus thin coats

I don't trust the primer that comes from the factory. I always put a second coat of primer on to ensure paint sticking. I got burned once by not doing this, trusted the factory primer and paint peeled right off. Had to redo the paint job totally.
Another great video guys. I am replacing both my doors with metal doors and I was wanting to spray them to get a nicer finish. I was thinking of using my spray gun that I use with my air compressor. How do I thin my paint or can I even thin it down. Thanks. And keep those videos coming. Andy
Takes too much time and doors are hard to reinstall correctly. I have painted many doors. Leave door on hinges, pick a warm day, leave open inside house, tape off the hardware, repair and sand, wipe clean and use a special nap roller for metal after brushing. Works great with less effort
No need to take off hinges, should roll flats of panels to mach texture to other flats on the door and the heel, or where the hinges are, should have been painted that color as well. A couple of other things, but I don't want to get nitpicky. Otherwise...Yep, that's how you paint an Exterior Metal Door! lol
It could cause the door to be more like tight to close its better to leave it the way it is or door won't close right. Remember your adding an additional layer.

I would advice to Do take the door off the hinges. If you don’t paint on a daily basis, i guarantee you that there will be drips if you paint it vertically.
I read somewhere that if your metal front door gets a lot of direct sun, you should use an oil-based exterior paint with a bonding primer underneath. What are your thoughts on that,TOH?
I have a south facing exposure so my front door is in the sun basically all day. I used Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 primer and a latex exterior paint from SW. 5 years later the door looks just fine.
With all do respect, I wouldn't have had much of a different response. I'd be like, "IDK. They almost look the same.........Wifey!!!!!!" Works every time. :)
I’m confused, so you can still use a DTM primer when you’re not actually putting on directly to metal? You’re putting it on previously primed/painted door?
What about all the bugs flying into your house when the door is off for hours? Here if FL it is too hot to leave a big hole in the house. All the AC goes out. I did mine with the door in place and it came out great.
I live in Florida. The best answer is just wait until winter when you have a weekend where temps are cooler. The amount of bugs are also significantly less in winter/cooler weather than they are in summer. The last answer is to use house wrap (thin painters drop cloth tends to be too flimsy and stretches) and seal up the opening by taping it around the door frame if the door will be off for an extended period.
You are partially right. It didn't have to be taken off, but it wolud need to stay partially open for a few hours to avoid sticking where it makes contact with the weather stripping.
You cannot paint the side of a door that closes against the door sil and then actually close it. It will be glued shut LOL. I’m sure there are at least 20 possible creative ways to close the door opening with something temporary.
Just bought a house-the door to the garage is metal and apparently painted with a latex paint to match the interior doors as it began peeling off when I went to clean it. How do I remove the old paint before repainting? Sand paper? A chemical?
Yes but the paint they were using was for metal and the spline is mostly wood and would of looked ugly if painted with the same paint ! I was guessing that is why they skipped it !
I mean if i was doing that door i would of done the spline with a spray can that had a similar look to the paint on the door ! As you stated the spline is usually done to look the same as the outside of the door so it will not stand out when the door is open !

So when the door is open nothing will really stand out ! Maybe I'm too old school and maybe they don't teach that anymore !
With this Old House, they should’ve done an existing metal door that was older. Not a brand new one straight from the factory. Saboor, if your metal door is older and has been painted on; you will need to sand, wipe and prime before painting. Glidden says an oil paint made for metal works best.

I just applied a coat of paint to my exterior metal door similar to the one in this video and used a brush for the panels and a foam roller for the rails and stiles and noticed that there were air pockets that formed after using the foam roller. After the door dried, you can see the air pockets on the door. How can I avoid this happening again while applying the second coat while using a foam roller?
Can you clear coat over this paint job to make the paint job more durable and last longer or does it not need any clear coating? I don't know these things so I am asking.
Josh Hibbs There is special transparent laquer for yaughts to make things waterproof. I used it on some MDF panels that i have outdoors on the inside of my balcony fence to keep eyes from protruding my private space. Those panels are still in top condition after 3 years or so. So, for how long was the door removed from the house? All that time it was open to let bugs fly or walk in, and the AC or Heating was most likely running. Finally, the door goes back on, so the question is, was the door off long enough that the paint was dry enough so that it did would not stick to the seals? you should still sand. It slightly roughs up the surface to give something for the paint to stick to. Power washing wont do that.
