Just FYI for anyone in a humid climate… don’t stash dirty/wet gloves in a drawer because they’ll mildew. I keep an open basket and toss my gloves in there. For gloves that can’t be washed, I ran a ribbon across the top of my door and use clothes pins to clip the gloves so they can dry out. I also hang any solo gloves until I can find their mate. Works great.

Hello lovely Becky. If I may, as a recent graduate in horticulture studies I know and value the importance of a well organized workspace. I was thinking the whole way through and was glad that you asked at the end about your heating mats. Your work bench is ideal for potting/re potting and tray preparation. You would not want to reach for things over your heating trays and drop them on top of your seedlings. On this table you have access to all your supplies, your handy shelves and drawers at an arm's reach, etc. However, if you end up putting your heating mats on a table away from the walls, make sure to cover your wires for the mats with tape or another piece of carpet. Seems like the center of your room would get more natural sunlight than your work bench too. Anywho...you've sooo got this! Looking forward to living vicariously through you from my 7th floor apartment. I do have a lushiously overflowing balcony of plants but still..lol. xo
So true and for tomatoes, cucumber and other cucurbitaceaes she really could use a shelf in front of the window with no light. The are fast growers and do not need to be presown that early. Of course I don´t know if she presow those, I have to, living near the artic circle having to start my chili in Dec/Jan to get a sturdy plant and good harvest before the first frost.

We have loved a lot of Becky recipes too with little or no modifications. There was only one recipe that we really weren't fans of and that was the sweet and sour meatballs from like a year ago. But we LOVE the biscuits, season salt, smash chicken, and italian stuffed peppers with the bechamel!

Becky I'm in the UK the rule here you never plug an extension into an extension its a fire hazard I know USA electrical is are different from the uk but you might be better buying another timer better safe than sorry xx

Same! To have it close enough to check daily or even multiple times a day with or without kids (especially as baby gets more mobile) but also not in the way of your living space. With the freeze dryer and other things in there too, you could kill two bird with one stone. My grow shelves are in my basement next to my laundry and workbench and cat bowls/box so it's super convenient
For sure! I would love that space, paint the walls white to help to reflect the light. Also, it’s expensive to heat a greenhouse unless you have a small greenhouse in the greenhouse.

I'd keep your seeds stored in the basement, as you had them before. Cool and dark. Waaaaay too much natural sunshine, clear storage boxes, and I'm assuming the room isn't air conditioned. It'll probably get pretty warm in the summer 😬 But I'm totally jealous of your seed starting room! I have two of those racks currently full in my living room. You'll definitely want a third, or even a fourth! 🌱🌱🌱
FYI, Home Depot has a medium mixing tub in their concrete section which is a more comfortable height to use as a potting tub rather than the tall tub you have . The tubs are just $7.78 each and very heavy duty. I suggest getting two. They stack easily. Yes to the extra table, especially to start. If you plug your heat mats in to warm, they flatten easily. I roll mine when not in use, and they flatten very quickly when warmed up.

Of course we’re all interested in your seed haul. Also, Josh could build you a simple table made from 2X4’s to drop your soil tote into. Put it next to the table in the center of the room and you’d have the perfect set up.
Those plug-ins concern me a bit for safety, so I'm just going to say: The surge protectors almost always have a hole in the back for a screw mount. You could put them on the wall, even vertically, and then plug the lights into them there. I think there is at least a slight to good chance of soil and/or water getting into the plugs if they lay on the shelves. Once the seeds are up, the temperature is even better a bit cool because otherwise the plants are going to try to grow aggressively which may not be best for the outside world they are going to be placed in to.
I highly recommend a rolling cart with a flat top for your work station it will make life so much easier to transfer from your table to shelves and back and forth. Just get one with locking castors/wheels. I also recommend that so you can easily move the table around the room or house or property as needed. It can also be used to assist when you are doing preserving projects. You can even find some or make one that has adjustable height for more comfort.
Having a folding table (and chair) that you can use when needed and then store away after would be a huge help for you. Also loved the chickens coming to visit with you in the seed starting room - too cute!

Hi Becky! Bringing in another table is a better idea, although I think you should put the heat mats on the new table and use the big black one for potting etc., because it has drawers, you can put the potting tools in the drawers, and put them away. Lovely use of the space! 😍 (And if you don't need the wood shelf on the left side-between the growlight shelf and the lamp less shelf, you should put it somewhere else, and the metal shelf beside the lamp one, so it has more light. Just a suggestion. 😉)
My grandparents had similar gardening issues. They kept a daily calendar with every weather details they could including when shade would arrive and leave different areas of the garden year round. Then they would compare their calendars with official farming almanacs. It took them over five years of record keeping to develop a reliable growing and weather pattern for their area. They still used official almanacs even after they established their own weather history for their garden. They had a beautiful and bountiful garden and orchard. Hope this detail is helpful.
last year was pretty disheartening for a lot of North Texas growers I know. Very little of my plants produced, the heat was too much, we had storms and winds rip up plants, and then winter hit early and devastated the last of it. One vlogger quit entirely, another left their community garden management position and is taking a year off - who knows if they'll come back. 😥 I initially found you by searching for 'vegetable gardening 8b' because I thought if I could find someone gardening in a similar area/climate I'd have an easier time following along and planting. Regardless, all of your canning and food prepping has been incredibly helpful!! and your positivity continues to lift me up and keep trying! :)
Becky, I keep my heat mats on my grow shelves, so my peppers and tomatoes benefit from a consistent heat source. I live in the grow zone 9b in the Texas Gulf Coast area. I start seeds when it is about 50 degrees outside, so my mats stay at 78 degrees inside my cool garage. Works like a charm! Good luck growing, friend!

What a massive cleaning job! Looks fantastic, and I agree with those who suggested leaving it as a permanent grow room - you’ll appreciate it in the dead of winter!. Also as others have said, never plug one powerboard into another. Suggest you get an electrician to install some extra power points as they’ll first make sure the system can safely the additional points won’t overload the system.
HONEY, REMEMBER TO MOVE YOUR FIRE EXTINGUISHER FROM ON TOP OF THE WATER HEATER. THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER IS UNDER PRESSURE AND COULD EXPLODE. PUT WAX ON THE BOTTOM OF THE DRAWERS TO HELP PULL THEM OUT MORE SMOOTHER.
I would not use the second drawer for dirty gloves, I would just keep the basket not far, put dirty gloves in there and it will be easy to carry back and forth to the washer and back to the potting center

I started working with my grandma Kiser in her garden on the coast and her fertilizer was fish scrapes and compost. She had the richest soil it was so black and had a great feel to it. @j. mc my great Aunt always had a garden in the same space. Every year she added amendments to her soil, things like compost, worms and manure. Also some minnows from the lakes and rivers. I would recommend adding the industrial sized casters to your wire shelving. Makes it much easier to relocate, move to clean up spills, even when fully loaded etc.

I had a carpet full of filfth and stains and couldn't replace it but got someone to come around and do a steam carpet cleaning job and it came up looking brand new, even several shades lighter in colour and smelled so clean and fresh. I highly recommend this, your carpet is OK, it's not torn or doesn't look too shabby and would be a good temporary solution costing probably a tenth of new flooring.
My brother in law has started his seeds and is planning a big garden. I ordered your ball canning book for the rewards of his labor. He is planting a huge in ground garden and raised beds all over using old pallets for that. So excited about your garden and ours

Nice that you have that extra room to use as a grow room. Our seedlings are on my kitchen counter and our breakfast nook area. This weekend we have our grandson's first soccer game then to have lunch with our Son in law & family to discuss and assist in our daughter's business they started in September. I just ordered 10 more chickens that way I don't have to chase the stores to see if they would receive the breed we wanted. After the lunch we will come back and put together our greenhouse and transplant some seedlings. in our breakfast nook I have two extra tables set up for my plantings. I will be happy when we can move these out to our green house then to the raised beds. Only a couple weeks away. I probably should not have started so early. But our weather was so warm. Can't wait to see how your garden develops this year.
bring in one of your foldable tables and a chair to the grow room this year. If you use it a bunch and it's worth the money, get a dedicated one that's the right height for a workstation next year.
Becky, I don't know how you do it! You accomplish so much in so little time! I watch every one of your videos and I'm blown away! Because of your passions, you've made me passionate about gardening and cooking! I'm in Zone 7b on Long Island, NY, and started some seedlings already. I didn't think they'd germinate so quickly, so I have to keep them alive until April! Ugh! In this, my 4th year of gardening, we've decided to play. We'll grow the things we love each year, and just try a whole bunch of things we've never grown. I'm very limited on my grow space - I have 4 - 4'×4' beds, an inground strawberry patch, and I just got a Green Stalk Vertical Garden which will allow me a maximum of 30 plants to grow. I started my ground cherries inside because of you. So much fun! I also woke up early this morning and prepared 4 dishes. I don't have freezer or fridge room, so I just cook for as much space as I have. You've made me believe I can do it! And I'm 60! I've got so much more to learn from you. Thank you so much!
Inexpensive grow lights: LED shop light, 5000 lumen, day light. Bought at Walmart $20 each. Work great. Have been using for yrs. I do have 1 regular grow light. No difference in growth so decided not to purchase any more for seed starting. I do use for my other plants though around the house and in sunroom. Love your videos Becky. Want to bottle your energy. Put your heat mats on the metal racks. The starts need heat and light both. You only need heat mats for your tomatoes and peppers. Brassicas don't need the heat mats

Great video!! I have oregano and thyme and lavendar that have naturalized here in BC Canada. We are in the Northern Okanagon Shuswap area. It does get -30°C every year but they come back each Spring as well as all of my chives! I started broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, shallots, scallions, leeks, and red onions under grow lights and on heat mats , February 08th. I dug up my beautiful peppers and brought them into the back of my livingroom to over winter. This spring the flower garden and squash garden and completion of the front garden will be done. I just need for the snow to leave. Oh, all my seedlings are started in worm castings with perlite mixed in.
I found a power strip with one set of plugs on or off and the other set of plugs could be individually programmed to turn off and on or done manually. It was a game changer for my seed starting this year! I start in the garage and we moved my shelving from an exterior wall to an interior wall and I think that was key also. I hang my lights from chains that I can raise and lower as the plants grow and that really helps with legginess and with checking (sometimes hourly) on the seedling progress. This year we also used a soil blocker and it made it fantastic for up-potting. I recommend watching some videos on it. As always, I am so impressed with how much you get done!!
Top: put matching gloves together with a squeezable paper clip or clothes pin. This way you are not searching for its mate. Also label your drawers, doors and shelves) so other now where things are or go. you may also consider putting solid tubber mats down in your area for easier clean up since you have carpeting down. When taking up your carpet in the future you will have to scrape the glue off the floor.
Also yes, you should perhaps check in with Josh about those extension cords. It seems like a little much for one outlet. But I don't know how much power and all that stuff is, so you should double check. Just to be on the safe side. :)
I bought the photo organizers for seeds too! I actually made labels for the side that faces up when they are all in the box....on the left side of the latch, I put the date(ish) the seeds need to be started indoors, and on the right of the latch, the date to transplant them outside. If the seeds get started directly in the ground, I only put a date on the right. (All dates are based on the "before last frost" for my area, going by what the packet said for each type of seed.) Then I sorted seeds based on how long "before last frost" into each box and VIOLA...the most organized I've ever been with starting seeds, thanks to YOU!
You could put a board on the shelves in the corner to put the heat maps on and use the whole table for potting. I do recommend the cement mixing tubs at Home Depot for mixing soil. Much better than a tote and not expensive at all. I actually have several that I use for different gardening purposes.

When you first heat the mats with seed trays on them them will flatten out perfectly. If you like cucumbers, you should try Katrina cucumbers for Johnny's. They are sooo prolific, don't need pollinators, you can use them small to pickle or grow large for slicers and freeze dry great for snacks or dipping. A little pricey for seeds, but well worth it.

The table is a fantastic idea. Buy bed risers and place under the feet to raise the table to a more comfortable height.

Becky, if you put wheels on your shelves, you can just roll the whole shelf outside and not have to do tray by tray. I did this for the first time last year and I loved it.

Of course we’re all interested in your seed haul. Also, Josh could build you a simple table made from 2X4’s to drop your soil tote into. Put it next to the table in the center of the room and you’d have the perfect set up.
Those plug-ins concern me a bit for safety, so I'm just going to say: The surge protectors almost always have a hole in the back for a screw mount. You could put them on the wall, even vertically, and then plug the lights into them there. I think there is at least a slight to good chance of soil and/or water getting into the plugs if they lay on the shelves. Once the seeds are up, the temperature is even better a bit cool because otherwise the plants are going to try to grow aggressively which may not be best for the outside world they are going to be placed in to.
I highly recommend a rolling cart with a flat top for your work station it will make life so much easier to transfer from your table to shelves and back and forth. Just get one with locking castors/wheels. I also recommend that so you can easily move the table around the room or house or property as needed. It can also be used to assist when you are doing preserving projects. You can even find some or make one that has adjustable height for more comfort.

Hi Becky! Bringing in another table is a better idea, although I think you should put the heat mats on the new table and use the big black one for potting etc., because it has drawers, you can put the potting tools in the drawers, and put them away. Lovely use of the space! 😍 (And if you don't need the wood shelf on the left side-between the growlight shelf and the lamp less shelf, you should put it somewhere else, and the metal shelf beside the lamp one, so it has more light. Just a suggestion. 😉)
Don't forget a radio for soft classical music. Plants love that!

My grandparents had similar gardening issues. They kept a daily calendar with every weather details they could including when shade would arrive and leave different areas of the garden year round. Then they would compare their calendars with official farming almanacs. It took them over five years of record keeping to develop a reliable growing and weather pattern for their area. They still used official almanacs even after they established their own weather history for their garden. They had a beautiful and bountiful garden and orchard. Hope this detail is helpful.
Hi Becky, you may want to purchase another timer, "daisy chaining" (connecting multiple extension cords/power strips) is a fire hazard.
last year was pretty disheartening for a lot of North Texas growers I know. Very little of my plants produced, the heat was too much, we had storms and winds rip up plants, and then winter hit early and devastated the last of it. One vlogger quit entirely, another left their community garden management position and is taking a year off - who knows if they'll come back. 😥
I initially found you by searching for 'vegetable gardening 8b' because I thought if I could find someone gardening in a similar area/climate I'd have an easier time following along and planting. Regardless, all of your canning and food prepping has been incredibly helpful!! and your positivity continues to lift me up and keep trying! :)

Becky, I keep my heat mats on my grow shelves, so my peppers and tomatoes benefit from a consistent heat source. I live in the grow zone 9b in the Texas Gulf Coast area. I start seeds when it is about 50 degrees outside, so my mats stay at 78 degrees inside my cool garage. Works like a charm! Good luck growing, friend!

What a massive cleaning job! Looks fantastic, and I agree with those who suggested leaving it as a permanent grow room - you’ll appreciate it in the dead of winter!. Also as others have said, never plug one powerboard into another. Suggest you get an electrician to install some extra power points as they’ll first make sure the system can safely the additional points won’t overload the system.
HONEY, REMEMBER TO MOVE YOUR FIRE EXTINGUISHER FROM ON TOP OF THE WATER HEATER. THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER IS UNDER PRESSURE AND COULD EXPLODE. PUT WAX ON THE BOTTOM OF THE DRAWERS TO HELP PULL THEM OUT MORE SMOOTHER.

I would not use the second drawer for dirty gloves, I would just keep the basket not far, put dirty gloves in there and it will be easy to carry back and forth to the washer and back to the potting center

Hi Becky watching your gardening videos is great as I can't garden anymore because of disability issues. So watching you gives me good vibes and fun. I started working with my grandma Kiser in her garden on the coast and her fertilizer was fish scrapes and compost. She had the richest soil it was so black and had a great feel to it. I learned by weeding with her. She had the greenest of green thumbs. I'm glad I found your channel just watching in the garden gives me a calm feeling. Thank you for starting this channel.🌱🌱🌻🌞🌦

@j. mc my great Aunt always had a garden in the same space. Every year she added amendments to her soil, things like compost, worms and manure. Also some minnows from the lakes and rivers. I would recommend adding the industrial sized casters to your wire shelving. Makes it much easier to relocate, move to clean up spills, even when fully loaded etc.

You can put all your shelves in front of the windows by stacking them two deep.
We never used to start seeds inside, always directly sowed directly into full ground with very good results.

I had a carpet full of filfth and stains and couldn't replace it but got someone to come around and do a steam carpet cleaning job and it came up looking brand new, even several shades lighter in colour and smelled so clean and fresh. I highly recommend this, your carpet is OK, it's not torn or doesn't look too shabby and would be a good temporary solution costing probably a tenth of new flooring.
My brother in law has started his seeds and is planning a big garden. I ordered your ball canning book for the rewards of his labor. He is planting a huge in ground garden and raised beds all over using old pallets for that. So excited about your garden and ours
Plug in the mats and they will warm up so you can flatten them easier.

Thank you for the MI Gardner code. I placed my 1st order for this year. We are in SE Arizona and having unseasonably cold weather this year, typically our last frost date is the end of May. So excited to get planting!
Nice that you have that extra room to use as a grow room. Our seedlings are on my kitchen counter and our breakfast nook area. This weekend we have our grandson's first soccer game then to have lunch with our Son in law & family to discuss and assist in our daughter's business they started in September. I just ordered 10 more chickens that way I don't have to chase the stores to see if they would receive the breed we wanted. After the lunch we will come back and put together our greenhouse and transplant some seedlings. in our breakfast nook I have two extra tables set up for my plantings. I will be happy when we can move these out to our green house then to the raised beds. Only a couple weeks away. I probably should not have started so early. But our weather was so warm. Can't wait to see how your garden develops this year.
bring in one of your foldable tables and a chair to the grow room this year. If you use it a bunch and it's worth the money, get a dedicated one that's the right height for a workstation next year.
Becky, I don't know how you do it! You accomplish so much in so little time! I watch every one of your videos and I'm blown away! Because of your passions, you've made me passionate about gardening and cooking! I'm in Zone 7b on Long Island, NY, and started some seedlings already. I didn't think they'd germinate so quickly, so I have to keep them alive until April! Ugh! In this, my 4th year of gardening, we've decided to play. We'll grow the things we love each year, and just try a whole bunch of things we've never grown. I'm very limited on my grow space - I have 4 - 4'×4' beds, an inground strawberry patch, and I just got a Green Stalk Vertical Garden which will allow me a maximum of 30 plants to grow. I started my ground cherries inside because of you. So much fun! I also woke up early this morning and prepared 4 dishes. I don't have freezer or fridge room, so I just cook for as much space as I have. You've made me believe I can do it! And I'm 60! I've got so much more to learn from you. Thank you so much!
Inexpensive grow lights: LED shop light, 5000 lumen, day light. Bought at Walmart $20 each. Work great. Have been using for yrs. I do have 1 regular grow light. No difference in growth so decided not to purchase any more for seed starting. I do use for my other plants though around the house and in sunroom. Love your videos Becky. Want to bottle your energy. Put your heat mats on the metal racks. The starts need heat and light both. You only need heat mats for your tomatoes and peppers. Brassicas don't need the heat mats
Has someone already told you not to plug one surge protector into another surge protector? (Power strips) use that other outlet right there in the built in.

Use two of the shelves on the rack without grow lights for the heat mats freeing the top of the cabinets as work space.
Great video!! I have oregano and thyme and lavendar that have naturalized here in BC Canada. We are in the Northern Okanagon Shuswap area. It does get -30°C every year but they come back each Spring as well as all of my chives!
I started broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, shallots, scallions, leeks, and red onions under grow lights and on heat mats , February 08th. I dug up my beautiful peppers and brought them into the back of my livingroom to over winter. This spring the flower garden and squash garden and completion of the front garden will be done. I just need for the snow to leave. Oh, all my seedlings are started in worm castings with perlite mixed in.

I found a power strip with one set of plugs on or off and the other set of plugs could be individually programmed to turn off and on or done manually. It was a game changer for my seed starting this year! I start in the garage and we moved my shelving from an exterior wall to an interior wall and I think that was key also. I hang my lights from chains that I can raise and lower as the plants grow and that really helps with legginess and with checking (sometimes hourly) on the seedling progress. This year we also used a soil blocker and it made it fantastic for up-potting. I recommend watching some videos on it. As always, I am so impressed with how much you get done!!
Top: put matching gloves together with a squeezable paper clip or clothes pin. This way you are not searching for its mate. Also label your drawers, doors and shelves) so other now where things are or go. you may also consider putting solid tubber mats down in your area for easier clean up since you have carpeting down. When taking up your carpet in the future you will have to scrape the glue off the floor.
Also yes, you should perhaps check in with Josh about those extension cords. It seems like a little much for one outlet. But I don't know how much power and all that stuff is, so you should double check. Just to be on the safe side. :)

I bought the photo organizers for seeds too! I actually made labels for the side that faces up when they are all in the box....on the left side of the latch, I put the date(ish) the seeds need to be started indoors, and on the right of the latch, the date to transplant them outside. If the seeds get started directly in the ground, I only put a date on the right. (All dates are based on the "before last frost" for my area, going by what the packet said for each type of seed.) Then I sorted seeds based on how long "before last frost" into each box and VIOLA...the most organized I've ever been with starting seeds, thanks to YOU!
You could put a board on the shelves in the corner to put the heat maps on and use the whole table for potting. I do recommend the cement mixing tubs at Home Depot for mixing soil. Much better than a tote and not expensive at all. I actually have several that I use for different gardening purposes.

When you first heat the mats with seed trays on them them will flatten out perfectly. If you like cucumbers, you should try Katrina cucumbers for Johnny's. They are sooo prolific, don't need pollinators, you can use them small to pickle or grow large for slicers and freeze dry great for snacks or dipping. A little pricey for seeds, but well worth it.
