But no matter what it does save a ton of time, and is much more flexible for solving just about any setup problems. Why didn't you just use the distances calculated by your receiver, convert it into your delay in ms for the dsp input? Why were you computing the delay by trial and error?

    Haha, taking all these measurements are addicting, as soon as I got mine pretty close, I also used a tone generator to find out which frequency made my wall hung TV rattle, then cut that frequency enough so it doesn’t do it anymore unless it’s really cranked up. Great job with this tutorial.

  • @UpgradingAsUsual

    In REW Filter Task settings, set the Individual Boost & Overall Max Boost to zero to ensure no boost is applied. You have them both set to max (12 & 18). That could blow up any subwoofer easily if your not paying real close attention to your Auto EQ. Loving these videos and keep up the great content!

    • @COGuyStuff
      @COGuyStuff  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s not how it works. I set them to max just to give it max flexibility. It doesn’t mean it will actually boost anything. As I clearly went over, I said to set your target low so you are cutting frequencies. If had of set it high, then yes it would have been using some boosts. That still doesn’t blow anything up though.

    1:40 this is the other reason I got Def Tech 15. First reason I mentioned in the SVS setup video. The SVS 16's I had are exaggerated and simply don't sound good or musical. Yes they pump out a lot of bass but it's not realistic or good quality. Outside of some positive movie watchers reviews the only reason I got the SVS 16's was the remote and the app. It's great to be able to store three different settings. One for movie and one for music and one for something else. But for music listening they're just no good. I mostly listen to jazz and classical, and they are just not up to snuff. Movies? Sure if you want a lot of stuff with excessive bass, go ahead. But even given the same amount of output there's a world of difference in musical quality of the Definitive Technology 15's vs the SVS. Emphasis with HT is accuracy and transparency. Emphasis with SVS is as much bass as possible. The fact that your final line was full of peaks and valleys proves my point. The Def Tech are basically flat and trouble free. I could show you the SVS vs DT REW measurements, both done in the same room.

      @@COGuyStuff have you considered doing the upgrade to Dirac on your 2x4HD and doing a comparison of Dirac bass room correction vs the regular miniDSP software?
      Not that your response curve with the miniDSP software isn't fantastic. Just curious what that experience would look like, and of course, how it measures!
      I was doing some reading a couple months ago and I saw miniDSP said that the Dirac software expects to do full range correction, may not work great for subs-only.

    I have a easier to drive 90 dB/w/m speaker and are sitting 2m from them.
    Using miniDSP and after a while I noticed that there is noticeable hiss/sssssh coming from the speakers..
    Only left the subs outputs into the DSP and disconnected and bypass the DSP for the main speakers.

    Hi CO Guy, I got stuck on your channel through your buttkicker vid. Thanks a lot.
    This time, while watching the video, i had big smile on face, having the following thought or guess:
    Those videos are made because NOBODY of our family or neighbours or friends or collegues are interested in what we are doing here!
    Isn't it?! Hahaha! I am a physicist, making that circumstance even worse :-)
    I but the butt kicker under my drum chair. I am quite deep into edrums and MIDI and MIDI controller, drum pads and drum modules, and triggers and software drumming and audio software and the electronics connected to all that and I am trying to build a DIY hi hat controller or actually testing different sensors etc.
    Besides that, I am into smartHome stuff and networking and DSLR photography.
    And the people react to all that like: "Whata hell.... what are you doing there and why?! Why you're not reading a book or watch a movie?"
    For me one day is definitely to short ...
    So, maybe I will also make a video, talking to people who are insterested in what I am talking about! Really, that was quite funny, ... to me ... at least :-)
    Greetings from Germany
    Manuel

    Sorry if my question is naive. So you phase corrected the main to Sub and found the Audyssey came back with the same delay and post that you switch Audyssey off again and smooth the curve to your house curve, basically switching off Audyssey all together. So if you do not use Audyssey you lose the ability to get Dynamic EQ which is fine for listening levels but you lose out for lower volume levels ?

  • @luckymckay

    Quick question, when you were level matching the subs, what level was the volume on your AVR? And just to clarify, you gain match different brand subs to same db output from same position in room, move subs to thier location, and then adjust gain levels on sub again to level match? If so, isn't that the same thing as just having the subs set in their location and matching them all to 75db?

    • @COGuyStuff
      @COGuyStuff  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. As I said, when gain and level matching it’s all done at the sub. Avr volume doesn’t matter what it’s at. Setting to 75 for test level is the opposite. You don’t touch the subs, you only use avr volume.

    • @luckymckay
      @luckymckay 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@COGuyStuff thanks for the reply. I guess I'm just kinda struggling with grasping this concept. For example, I have two HSU vtf3 mk5 subs on my screen wall gain and level matched. I now want to add a third pb2000 behind my couch. But now I'm going to have to lower the gain knob on the pb2000 in order to "level" match it to the other two subs on the front wall in relation to my main listening position correct?
      So as of now, my two HSU VTF3 Mk5 subs have the gain set at 10 o'clock, the svs may hypothetically have to be set at 9'oclock on the gain knob to compensate for the decreased distance to my listening position.
      Sorry for the confusion on my end. Appreciate the videos and helpfulness you provide!

    • @mtmmason
      @mtmmason 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@luckymckay This video is enlightening, but you've hit on the one area of contradiction. There's no point in gain matching if you're going to level match. Imagine level matching first, then move all your subs to the same location to "gain match", then move them all back and level match again. The 2nd time you level match will be no different than the first time so why bother with gain matching unless you need the exercise. Everyone has a different approach and I think CO Guy is one of the most straight forward except for the two different matching approaches. In the end he used level matching.

    Is there a reason the filter is loaded to the output channels? I would think adding to the input would be more ideal so that you can than adjust your output filters when need (when using Bass EQ - BEQ - for example).

    I’m confused. Why do you gain match the subs only to have to turn them down to level match? I set the gain to half way on both subs in different positions. How do you level match them if you don’t have an svs app? If you go back and level match then they won’t be gain matched since you turned down the sub gain to level match.

    • @COGuyStuff
      @COGuyStuff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gain matching is so multiple subs sound as one. Level matching is so the sub(s) match the mains.

      DIRAC is completely worth it for full range correction, using it with speakers and subs. DIRAC for subs only is overkill but it will be a bit better than REW generated filters. No cons to DIRAC, apart from the increase in cost. It is one of if not the best room correction in the world.

    Hello I got a question. After you EQ something in REW, if you take those filters in Equalizer APO, probably you will see that overall db go over the 0 (if you boosted something in EQ) and you have to apply a preamp filter and decrease gain to match 0 again, or you risk to blow your speakers. The question is, if you export the EQ filters directly in minidsp or an other dsp, how can you know if you need to fix this db issue?
    Thanks

    • @COGuyStuff
      @COGuyStuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      REW does not give you values anywhere close to a clipping level, you would need to apply your own digital gain like crazy to make that level. Non issue.

    If you have a DSD256 music file going from SSD Drive thru Media Center 26 to a native DSD DAC(iFi iDSD BL) and then to the analog inputs of a Denon AVR-X4500H(Audyssey off). Question is: If you use external miniDSP for mains and sub (and external Amps), the miniDSP changes the analog signal to digital (@ 48KHz or even 96KHz, not sure?) and then back to analog.. you final resolution is limited to 48 or 96KHz right or wrong? If right, then you should never use DSP correction to get the best DSD sound from your system. Very confused about this. Any help will be appreciated.

      Just to end my conversation,
      I found the answer corroborating my thoughts at : "discussion Forum"
      Someone asks:
      Room Correction without loosing MQA and DSD
      I have a terrible room, even with a lot of acoustic treatment.
      I have been thinking about room correction as it seems to get better and better. Dirac Live looks very easy to use and have got a lot of great reviews. So I would like to use that.
      If I buy the SHD Studio from miniDSP then I have to say goodbye to DSP (misspelling should be DSD) and MQA. Are there a way to have room correction and MQA/DSD?
      Another product or alternative to Dirac? End of Quote.
      Interestingly, many of the people who tried to answer the question did not have a clue what he was asking!!!
      The answer, at this time, seems to be "No".

Any suggestions for someone who is first getting into it for the first time but not willing to drop thousands ie receiver speakers etc? Did you ever get a chance to see the Vizio Quantum X and Samsung QLED Q7 tvs side by side and if so which do you suggest? As far as buying everything - if you can't wait, space it out and catch the right time with sales and such like I did, you'll either be paying more, or not getting as much. The subwoofer will usually be significantly delayed relative to the mains, due to the built-in DSP latency, so we need to delay the MAINS, not the sub. The shortcut is to set the front/center/surround to 7' distance in the AVR, and the sub to 20' in the AVR. This will force the AVR DSP to delay the main/center/surrounds, thus roughly compensating for the sub DSP latency as a baseline prior to calibration via minidsp.
