  • Back then in 1967 some 53 years ago I joined BUA, pleased and enthusiastic, to be taken on by Pete Lucas, BUA Instrument section Forman. During the summer of 1967 with 8mm Cine Camera in hand, I captured ramp activity at Gatwick Airport on a typical day. Line Maintenance was always intense, I remember the pace could be frantic in the mornings. Working on the Flight Line as a mechanic was a rewarding experience interacting with aircraft and Flight Crew. In those days it was single trade so we were a very close knit team, specialised instrument section. How things have changed, but that is the way we were.

    A wonderful documentary upload,…….
Those were the Golden days when an Aircraft Engineer is an Engineer that can think about the defect and fix it, in those days when the Chief Inspector was answerable to the CAA.
The Engineer was answerable to the CAA via the chief inspector, the Moto was “money of no object, safety first”, that was before the bean counters entered the management of the airlines, and sprung from under the stones the “Quality Managers” or the lack of,…. to dilute the profession, and being a “Yes” man as a primary qualification to be answerable to the bean counters… the Max on a larger scale is a testimony to the profit before Quality.

Thank you for uploading this video. It certainly took me back. My father worked as a loader for BUA before moving on to British Caledonian Airways in Baggage Facilities. Fond memories of growing-up in the early days of Gatwick and plane-spotting from the observation area...

@@ianhaines100 hay man.. am 79 years old (Great Grandpa), can not remember you all, ... my name is Sabah, I worked hanger maintenance 1-11 using the "flimsy chitties" for scheduled and defects maintenance and using Spanner 4 when online, cashed my chips and retired to the south of France 2004 after gaining Full Avionic Xs and Rs ticket plus Turbine Engine and pressurized Airframe, got EASA Part 66, B1, B2, and C, Airbus A300B4 then the B737-800, BAe146/AVRO, full Avionics plus Eng and AF cover, I had a colorful Aviation career, will do it all again in the next life with no regrets
I do not know if we crossed paths, after Gatwick, Chanel airways, Field Aircraft Services, AirAnglia, University BSc, Shorts Brothers Belfast, AirUK, Heavy Lift Cargo airline, RyanAir, and many in-between then followed by the money-making trail of contracting in Europe living out a suitcase
Wish you all chaps and families are all well and keeping healthy.

Wish we could return to days of these. Long before the rubbish like Ryanair appeared on the scene.
